There's an automated obnoxious recording for Harbor Freight tool sales where they call you up and start talking immediately. How ridiculous? How did they get my home office number?

UGH.

A lot of businesses ask for your phone number when you check out. When asked why it's usually that they want the sale in their system in case you lose the receipt and want to return it ... yah right. I usually say no but sometimes give them some bogus number I make up on the spot just to screw up their system. I hope I didn't give them your number.

I give them the numbers of "aquaintances" who I believe would "appreciate" the calls.....

Wonder how the mother-in-law responds to some of the calls she gets?

:)

Yes, he called me yesterday. I'd given my work number (mistake) and was a little irritated. I must admit I did listen to most of the message and will probably go over to HF this weekend (which makes it no different than most other weekends).

I got the "can I have your phone #?" deal at Lowes a while back. As the gal working there was quite a cutie I told her "the only reason you need my number is if we're dating"

That ended the conversation :(

Same here. Lowe's has started to do it in Canada too. I asked why ... "in case you need to return the item". I said ... "that's funny, I never get asked that in the self check out aisle" (which is automated of course).

Sears got my cell phone number for the rewards program that they have, and the next day they started sending me spam text messages.

Send them a fax back of a ream of black construction paper. They'll go through a ink cartridge in minutes.
That only works if there is a real fax on the other end. Most if not all are computer generated and may not even answer incoming calls LOL.

I always give them information (555-1212). Usually they just type it in. A couple of times they have mentioned "Hey that's the number for information." I reply: "Thats right, if you call them, I am sure they will give you my number."

The other thing I do is when they ask me for a zip code (I live in North Carolina). I always give them my old Seattle zip code. I can just imagine their marketing guys marveling at how the local Home Depot is drawing from such a large area.

Whenever a business ask for my e-mail I tell em I don't have one, whenever the clerk ask for my phone number I tell 'em (720) 555-1212; they never catch on, I guess thats why they are only a clerk.

Other times I give them numbers to radio stations that I listen to.

I created a Google Voice account just for this type of problem. It does a lot of things but what I like the most about Google Voice is it's just an anonymous number that doesn't convey any amount of person information.

I just put a voice mail greeting on it, "this is **, please leave a message" and forget about it. I use this number when anyone I don't know asks for my phone number and if I do get a message Google converts it to text and e-mails it to me for a quick Delete.

For all of you that use those 20% off coupons, usually they ask you to fill in all the information, but I usually just put a name in there and nothing else, but many times that isn't good enough, so I make stuff up such as address and phone number, but yes, I did also get the automated phone call a week or so ago.

I would do that too, until I noticed the clerk "storing" the coupons in a bin under the register ....... the garbage can. :)

Now I just ask for the 20% at the register and they will scan a coupon they have taped to the keyboard
