Quick question, can you haul an air compressor on its side with no ill effects.

Edit: Is $900 for an ingersoll rand 7.5 HP 80gal. With the full add on package: after cooler automatic drain... that is a few years old a good buy.

If you do lay it on it's side with oil in it, roll the pump over by hand before powering it up. This will ensure oil did not seep past the piston rings.

What I was told when I picked up my IR 80 gal. compressor was to let it stand in an upright position for a few hours so the oil would drain back down. Same for a fridge, let is stand for a few hours. I've never heard the 24 hour thing. If that oil can't drain back in 2-4, I don't know what another 20 hours would do. Aside from that, I have never had a problem with any compressor or any refrigerator that I have ever hauled.

Bump for edited question. I think I will just lay it down then wait to run it. Unless I can get it in the truck upright somehow.

I just hauled my 60 gallon CH compressor home from Lowes a month ago on its side since my truck has a shell that's too heavy to take off by myself. It stood for a couple of days while I finished the wiring, and has worked perfectly since. I did note the oil level in the sight glass before and after the trip and it didn't change.

This is good idea to make sure it rotates easily after letting the oil drain down for a few hours.

This one must have been on it's side before it got it. I just removed all the lines, drained the oil and runs great.

What, So IOW to tell if there is not something like a hydraulic lock up?
Thanks, Tony

Yes, turning it over a couple revolutions by hand will ensure you don't have oil trapped in the cylinder. Oil should stay on the crankcase side of the rings, but why chance it?

if the compressor is used, then just drain the oil
I would want to start with fresh oil in it anyway

Yeah good point, cept for when I brought this little one home for $75.00.
The oil was like brand new looking.
Thanks,
Tony
