I have watched this forum for a while. I got especially interested when the plane crazy guy posted the airplane shop.

I am going to build a house of some sort on a few acers in a year from now give or take.

I am torn between my first idea of making an old barn into a very nice rustic house on the inside but retain the unique oldness of a barn from the outside. If you drove by if it was seen from the road, hopefully not, then you would never know and think it was a very old barn.

or now taking an airplane and making an under ground house out of it. It would at the start be cost to dig into a hill but then you have virtually no need for heat or cooling. It also would serve as a tornado shelter you would be totally safe in this in storms.

Has anyone dont a barn before like this on here. Yes I know, I have heard that it has been done before but I mean on this forum. Would it cost more to build it new to look old or more to restore an old barn? what would be the pros and cons of this project.

Then again the airplane would be cool because id have the **** pit sticking out the other side of the hill as a sorta balcony and with the windows make that my breakfast nook maybe? or kitchen? It would be different. would be cool to have it to where you have a diving board off of it and into a salt swiming pool.

I may use a smaller plane for a storm shelter and the barn for my house and garage. I may go with that who knows. but I am trying to estimate the difference in cost as to restore or build new? oh and I want a Bonanza fire place in it for those of us who are old enough to remember the western Bonanza. The hay loft will be another bed room over looking down stairs and maybe a fire pole to slide down as well as stairs.

NOPE will not be in any city. I Totally HATE city living. Rather have peace and quiet in the country. dont have time for the drama of the city life

1. Where are you going to find a plane big enough to live in?
2. How are you going to get it to your land?
3. I don't think fuselages are designed to withstand burial.

4. Where are you going to find contractors capable of fitting it with plumbing, electricity, etc??

5. Are their lots of old barns on afew acres for sale where you want to build?

The barn idea is not a bad one. But you need to be lucky enough to find land with an old barn on it that isn't in too bad of shape. I've seen it done on a few tv shows. One problem with older barns however, is that the main level ceiling height is usually pretty low. When they built these barns way back when, they had a purpose in mind. And having a high ceiling was a waste of space and a higher cost. Also in the north, they had a lower ceiling height so the cattle that were kept inside could stay warmer since their body heat had to warm up less space. You'd be lucky to find one with even 8 ft ceiling height on ground level.

Someone did that south of me about 20 yrs. ago. Still looks great today. It's even on a lake. You have to look twice to realize it's a house now.

If it wasn't for that first guy who said "screw this mud house stuff, I'm making mine out of WOOD", we would all be living in poop-colored houses.

I say go for the plane fuselage idea. Be different. You only get one chance at life, why not do what you like.

Besides, all the people having fun with your idea here will be drooling over your pics when you complete it, I assure you.

Old post and beam barns are NEAT structures...and if the framework is in good shape, then renovation costs are reasonable...but basically you will be building a a building inside a building. There is a limit on the additional dead loads the exisiting foundation will support, so an independent slab/foundation inside the building will be needed. Also, the roofing and siding has to be brought up to weather tightness, and that might require pulling the existing vertical siding boards off, sheathing, and insulation under them, and putting them back on as a decorative layer.

As for the roof, you will probably need all new roofing tin, again with a structural upgrade to the roof and insulation.

If you compare the project to the cost of a new metal skinned pole barn, the new structure might be much cheaper. And much faster to erect.
