Decided to start this thread to show my progress on this restoration. It seems like there is a decent following for the Hazet Trollies. It caught my attention because it was a nice vintage toolbox that I could use as a small cart to roll up next to the car. Right now, my tools generally lay on the floor and get trampled over when I'm working on the car. I had recently purchased a Snap On KRSC326 for $300 from a local mechanic that was leaving the field. As nice as the Snap On box is, I am just a DIYer and I don't forsee myself rolling that cart up next to the car when I am working on it in the driveway. I need something smaller/lighter. I will likely sell the Snap On cart and hopefully save up for a bigger Snap On as a garage box for the majority of my tools and keep my most used items in the Hazet. Or Maybe I will just use the Snap On as my main box.

I offered the ebay seller $350 for this box and he accepted. Here are the pictures he listed on ebay. I already started to take the box apart to see what needs to be replaced, but finding the parts is proving to be a bit difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get parts for this trolley?

That is a really cool cart. Kudos for an excellent project.

I was not going to strip and powder coat mine. I was thinking of sanding it down to a smooth surface and spray painting it. The previous owner sent some of the divider slots that look to be wrapped and never used. It looks like the original color was drastically different than the current cart color. I will use the dividers to try to find some matching spray paint.

The indexing boxes are in pretty rough condition as well as the wheels. I ordered some spare parts from this website. Don't know much about it, but the parts look original. I'll drill out the rivets for the indexing boxes when the new parts come in.

You might want to check out the VW site Samba. They have a Hazet assistent thread.

Congratulations and here is my thread on something similar:

Hazet changed their "blue" colour over the years. You might take a part from your Assistent which should be unfaded (under the rubber or so) and let it be scanned by a paint shop to get as near as the original tone.
Then you can also repaint the dividers and boxes.

Does your Assistent have the three legged stool?

I have three of the old Hazet Assisent service carts. One i use for car work in the garage or on the driveway. Another is collapsed and is parked in a corner (love that design), and the recent aquisition is awaiting a "stay or go" decision.

they were ahead of their time when it comes to tool carts - still are.

Here is one of my Hazet Assitants collapsed and ready to be tucked away

I'll get a pic of the one I actually use at home, and the latest one that is well used and dirty in a few days.

How deep are the trays on these? How stable are they on a slightly sloped driveway? Looks like they have high quality wheels on them, and the wider track rear wheels would add stability. Or are they designed for a flat smooth shop floor only?

I'm pretty impressed with Assistents. Considering how old some of the ones people are still toting around seem to be, they must be pretty well made.

Recently purchased a Hazet 190L cantilever. Hopefully in a few paycheques, I can get the hazet fairy to visit me with a new assistent.

I use mine in my garage and on my sloped driveway - the front casters have brakes and I use them. The tray depth is about 2" and the metal dividers are movable on approx 1" increments.

The base is where I have the air tools, and misc large items.

Thanks. That is what I was figuring on the trays, but in all the literature I've seen they list every other possible dimension besides the two middle trays and top tray depth. Including the bottom compartment depth. :lol_hitti

Also what I assumed on the stability given the weight distribution, even though they are a bit on the narrow the lack of high weight and wide tires keep them planted. Any experience with the smaller Assi?

Here is a pic of the latest Assistant that was used in one of Dallas' oldest BMW repair shops.

Not my kind of "patina"

needs a good cleaning.

Sorry for the lack of updates. The new parts shipped from Germany and should be arriving in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time, I have pretty much disassembled the cart. I will post pics once I sort through them.

I have also been caught up with a new used Snap On Classic 60 I bought off of CL. The orginal owner had it since 2007 and had it in storage the last few years. The box got banged up at one point on one of the corners. The slides were also full of grit and grime. I got away with it for $600. I cleaned up most of the box and the slides function fine now, but you can still hear some dirt on the bearings. I will see if Snap On will replace them for me though. Guess I will be selling my nearly new KRSC326 since the Classic has way more space. Hate to let it go since I only paid $300 for it, but I just don't have the space. The question now is whether I paint the Hazet Royal Blue to match the Classic or try to stay original. I found a Rustoleam paint that matches pretty close to the original color.

Finally got around to working on this a little bit. Took the cart apart and started sanding everything down. Also attempting to straighten out all the little bent parts.

I had ordered parts from http://tools-from-germany.com. But it's been almost two months and I have not received the parts. I emailed them asking for a refund at this point and the denied it. I called my credit card company to dispute the charges, so hopefully it will get resolved soon. In the mean time I reached out to http://www.jensputzier.com. Jens was able to help me order the parts and hopefully I'll get them soon.

I also bought some Rustoleum Maui Blue and Gloss Black Spray Paint.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Ole...Enamel-Gloss-Maui-Blue-Spray-269292/203814601

I drilled out all of the rivets for the indexing boxes. Initially while I was trying to raise and lower the shelves, everything would stick to the side rails. Upon closer inspection, I found that the plastic guides for the black top shelf were missing. It looks like the part that holds the pin in place broke and the plastic guides fell off after that. I ordered all new indexing boxes for all the shelves as part of my order from Jens.

During the sanding process I noticed a lot of imperfections and dents in the shelves. I thought about trying to flatten everything out, but It's not really worth the effort since it will just probably get dented again anyway. The only major thing is that there seems to be a lot of crevices on the top shelf. It looks like acid or something was spilled on it at some point. There are no holes though. I will just put a little Bondo on the top shelf to make it smooth. Only the bottom bucket left to sand and cleaning and painting.

I also forgot to note. The side bars that folder will also need some TLC. I will post pictures of the before and after of cleaning and fixing. I took the bar apart at the joint and it looks like there is a little ball detent inside the joint. I guess this serves to stop the bar from wiggling and holds it in place when you flip it up. Inside the ball detent, there is a little spring that is missing on both the bars. I will try to find two mini springs to slip back in there so that maybe the bars are a little more stable. It's not a big deal because the black handle bar can be tighten to keep the bars straight when in the unfolded position.

Finished sanding. This is as good as it will get for now. Been too busy with work to work on anything else. Also received the parts from Jens. Just wanted to give him a big thanks for getting me parts so quickly. Thanks for the Gummy Bears too.

Washed the parts and used the compressor to blow the majority of water off and out of the cervices. Painting to come next.

Good luck with the restoration! Just bought an assistent myself for €70. Already took it apart, will sand and paint it as soon as I get the time. I love these carts.

Got one side of the shelves painted. Left the top one out because I had to fill in all of the pitting with some Bondo. Will get the opposite side painted in the next few days and then start getting the hardware mounted back on.

Finally finished the cart. Far from perfect and definitely not a great paint job, but it will do for now. Expecting a baby soon so I just wanted to get this wrapped up. I goofed and thought that for some reason all of the rubber bumpers would come with one package. Each set is meant for one shelf. I will order taoore from Jens.

Also cut some Craftsman liners I had laying around. Hazet screwdriver set fit perfectly with a little trimming of the foam.
