I have a Hazet 300 ½ drive socket and ratchet set. It is very similar to the Snap On I purchased in the early 90 in design and with the high degree of fit and finish along with the satin and polished. The ratchet is built like a tank.

I find the Hazet fine tooth ratchets easier to clean up the handles than the comfort grip Snap on, but the Snap On is smoother. I find the Hazet double box wrenches lighter than but not as ergonomic as Snap On. I like the Hazet socket design better than Snap-on but the warranty or replacement will not be as easy.. Hazet list prices are less than Snap On but buying off of EBay would give Snap on the edge unless you import Hazet. There is an Ebay Seller in Germany that will ship to the USA. My answer is to get one of each

I like a lot of the Hazet stuff, not the ratchets, but lack of warranty support in the US would keep them from being a daily use tool for me. I buy most of what I find used if the price is good, nothing new so far.

Both are fine tools. I cannot tell you what will work best for you. Buy a few from each company and see what works best for you.

Both high quality. Both stupidly expensive, in some cases Hazet rivals SO pricing. A huge plus to SO is the lifetime warranty. Hazet is 1[?] year and European tool manufacturers as a rule do not warranty wear and tear or abuse.

If you're in the US its not even worth questioning. Hazet has a pathetic distribution network set up here. For that kind of money there is only one answer.

Hazet stuff is decent but I don't think it's better than SO. Most of it is Satin which is okay but not as nice as Chrome. If you're a fu fu german car guy you'll disagree but personally I haven't met a german car I thought was good either so to each his own.

You're wanting opinions on tools regarding "looks and so on???"

If I were asking for other's opinions, I'd be asking about durability, functionality, utility, etc. not "looks", but then again I'm not one of those guys who brags on how shiny his tools are. Usually instead of spending my time constantly polishing the dual 80, I'm busy using it.

Now as far as durability, functionality, and utility, I'd choose Snap-On. I've been happy with all the Snap-On hand tools I own. Yes, expensive but they are good quality.

I wonder how many of you guys saying SO have actually used any Hazet........?

Chrome is gaudy, I hate it. My tools are for working, not polishing:)

Either one is a strong, well engineered tool. Go with the one you can buy, warranty and/or upgrade/replace with the least amount of hassle.

Being in US I have only a few Hazet tools (wrenches, sockets and a few drive tools (allen, torx etc) but if I were in Germany that would probably make up 95% of my box like SO does currently.

I have hazet tools, specialty and some ratchets. Even the stainless steel 1/4 ratchet. The ratchets are good, but I personally still prefer snap-on. But you wont go wrong with hazet.

For me it all depends on what you need the tools for.

My rule of thumb is if you do a job often or have to borrow a tool then look around for tools that make your life easier. The brand is not what counts.

As for warranty the only tools I've had to replace are snap on tools - I guess this is more down to them being used more than the quality but must admit that the new stuff that they are bringing out now is very poor. I've had ratchet spanners fall to bits after a few weeks use & impact sockets going rusty yet my old 20 plus year old sockets never show any rust.
Even the side walls on snap on chrome sockets have become cumbersome compared to earlier versions.

As for Hazet tools only have the one set of spanners & when needed they do a great job:

They weigh very little have a great offset yet are very strong with no wear after 15 years.

Snappy have the BLING.

Folks wear large gold chains with diamonds for the BLING effect. You can make a necklace with Snappy tools and it will rival any jewelry.

I have never seen Hazet tools, so I cannot attest to their products.

Fatandre,

Just a suggestion... spend some time on Monte's "Old World Tools" thread. If you like what you see and read (i.e. Hazet tools and many other German and other Euro tool brands) you've probably answered your own question. If you don't like what you see and read, again you've probably answered you own question.

That's pretty much what it boils down to. I have a pretty mixed set of tools and enjoy tools of many brands, periods, and COOs. I do have some Hazets and enjoy using them.

For what it's worth, in 45 years, Iv'e never broken a tool or had to otherwise warrantee a tool for other reasons. In my mind, it just ain't an issue.

Just curious, do you make your living with tools or are you a more casual user of tools?

Nice job bringing the price down a little. Looks awesome, maybe needs a slight cleaning, but it's in rather nice condition.

Fatandre,

Nice grab on the Hazet assistant. From the looks of it, I think the Hazet bug may have already bitten you.

If you consider tools in the price range of Hazet or SnapOn my first choice would be Stahlwille :bounce:

The most significant difference between those German brands and the US style is the shape and finish of the wrenches. The SO look shiny but also bulkier while the German ones are matte and thin but still as strong as the SO.

However ratchets are a different story. I think SO is outstanding in this case.

I think quality wise they match each other. Personally I don't like SO ratchets that much, and for a simple reason. When I work on my cars, and my hands are oily, the chromed handle of the SO ratchets is just too slippery. I also like a thicker handle.

if you're just going for looks, I'm sure you could find much cheaper than Snap On or Hazet. Lots of cheap tools have nice shiny chrome. If you're going for durability and usefullness, that's another story. I buy mostly Snap On. Sure, they're nice looking tools but I like the fact that they're high quality tools, I find them well engineered and comfortable to use and their warranty is the best i've ever come across and I can warranty tools any time I step onto the truck or, I can just call SO and they mail what I need to my door. If I lived in Europe, more specifically in Germany, I'd likely have a Hazet roll cabinet and a 166C Assistent in my shop filled with Hazet tools and any other quality european brands that i liked and had reasonable access to.

that being said, I'm looking at adding an Assistent 166c to my garage as soon as I can find a decent deal on one (and can convince my wife that it's a good idea) and I've already started looking at building a vehicle specific set of Hazet tools for my car (VW GTI). I've always had a weakness for German cars and now I'm starting to have one for German tools.

Only you can decide "What looks good and so on" I like Hazet satin finish because the wrench does not slip out of my hands when oily. I LOVE Snap On ratchets. I have spent a bunch on german ratchets and am not impressed at all with the way they work, however "they look good" . The heads are to big, they can't go where Snappy goes.

I have mostly Stahlwille:) much better than Snap on or Hazet wrenches for me personally.
