billymade, thanks for the Hazet film links. I like the posts that question Hazet warranty and finish etc. I have never broken a Hazet tool, dumb luck? ok maybe, but I don't think so. I don't know if Hazet will warranty old stuff, but I never had to, check out the red "pop" button on the Hazet torque wrench, cool no subtle click. Quality of a product is where it is at, whats a warranty??Sears has a lifetime warranty you have to use when the tool is new at times, it's still apain, who cares if they give you another marginal tool to replace it. Give me a tool that won't break. Hazet Torx sockets are the best in the world, at least it is the only brand I never broke and I have impact abused them, when necessary. Snap-on makes their tools so "pretty" for marketing, and their recent Taiwan bull s... ticks me off. So German tools are imports, tough as tough gets, not as pretty but who cares. I doubt you will ever see a cheap labor "asian" tool from Hazet it's the last company who says we are expensive, high quality, and if you don't like it, we don't care. Snap-on used to be a similar company, but sold out and will continually sell out, hence my Taiwan/SO 80series ratchet . It used to just be Blue Point that could be imported, now their passing asian stuff of as SO hardline and don't even have the nuts to engrave it on the tool, where will it end, their prices didn't get any cheaper. The big tool companies are losing their focus, I'm a proffesional, that wants the strongest damn tool I can buy, maybe not for your average Joe, but that's what I need and I will pay the price. If I want cheap imported stuff to beat on, for junkyard, or to cut up and fabricate a tool, we have harbor freight, I don't want an import with a fancy dress and name. I gave my Taiwan ratchet back to my Snap-on guy and told him SO can keep it, not because it was a bad tool, but because the company is playing bull s... games, and I don't consider it the ultimate ratchet for three figure money. If I'm gonna be a USA made traitor, I want the best product, not a cheap knock off.

Vicegrip, Holy ****, Batman! Are those a bunch of 911 engines in the background? Are you a serious Porsche nut or what?
Ohh, man... I just figured out and saw a link to your shop.... lotsa kraut obsession here...LOL! I have been into VWs for a long time; your Porsche obsession is very apparent! Are you involved with Porsche's for your job? Also, do you have allot of German tools for your Porsche fixation? When I was in Germany for a month; believe it or not, I was all over and probably could count on one hand how many Porsche's I saw, I just assumed they would be everywhere! I guess most of the Porsche production goes overseas.... a good portion of it, probably to California!
Yes, a flat six air cooled, 2.7L from a 77 and a 3.6 from a 95. The 3.6 is going in the 1900 pound track car. :) The Porsche thing stems out of keeping VW bugs in my misspent youth. I saw a Porsche 912 with its Porsche 4 cyl pushrod motor in it and thought "cool how hard could it be to keep if it has a bug motor in it?" Boy was I wrong about the car being easy and right for getting it! They are a blast on a road racing track. I work for a Porsche Audi MB and Aston Martin dealer but not on the cars. This is where a lot of the car swag like the Porsche sign comes from.

Back on topic. I have not found Hazet to be a superior brand. It seems, to me at least, to be good a common mid level brand with cheap stuff for tool kits and good mid level stuff over the counter. I like good, good tends to be the best bang for the buck most times. I still want an Assistant roll around and keep looking. They have gotten expen$ive!

The model I think you are referring to is the 190L; motorshop has it for $100 or so here: http://www.themotoringshop.com/hazet.php?curPage=9
To check out these storage boxes and accessories; download the hazet catalog:http://www.hazet.de/uploads/tx_d3mlinkedsources/kap02_e_01.pdf#page=1&view=Fit
Look at page 49; for the 190L.
Thanks for the links. Lot of nice stuff and they still make the Assistant ... for $1200+ :shocking:

I will have to keep scouring the ads for an old banged up one that needs some care and repair. The tool box is a bargain in comparison. I found the 804 by stumbling over it on Craig's list. The seller did not care a whit about tools or tool boxes.

Yeah, I would love to find a Assistant as well.... that box seems to be a point of lust for the vintage aircooled vw/porsche crowd; which it seems, you and I were/are still part of even if we don't have those old vw's any more!... :)

Here is a pretty popular aircooled vw site that has a nice thread with tons of pics/history of this elusive/expensive tool cart: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=156061&start=0

255193.jpg

early Hazet "katalog" showing the assistant (note early model that didn't "collapse" the drawer supports); plus, the accessories that you could add on to the tool trolley, who said Snapon started the new trend of adding "bling" and all kinds of crazy accessories to your tool box?

p021.jpg

Old pics of a early VW dealership using Hazet Assistants to service early 60s Beetles!

274704.jpg

Assistant actually in use fixing a VW Thing!

261397.jpg

Cool, small VW diorama showing assistant and early Hazet "tool truck"; a Volkswagen Bus!

I also discussed the assistant in the past on this site as well: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16982&showall=1

That's a cool diorama with the minature Assistant. The picture of the techs working on 3 beetles at Charles Ferguson Motors shows how things have changed. No monster tool carts against the walls, shelves, or work benches. I guess you didn't anything that wouldn't fit in a small three tiered bath tub (Hazet Assistant) to work on VWs. I always liked those VW trucks in the back of the Thing too. Cool and different pictures!!

So far the German "elite" tool companies have no interest is farming out Asian labor,If the "truck" tool companies still made their stuff in the USA I wouldn't be so drawn to Hazet. Really??Do you want to replace a cheap set of Harbor Freight ratcheting wrenches with Cornwell or Snap-on Taiwan fare, is it really a pro upgrade,I don't think so.:(

I have a half dozen of their 450 series wrenches in large sizes 24mm up through 41mm and also have some stubby hex for doing diff and ****** service.

I consider them to be very high quality tools and wouldnt hesistate to buy more of their tools based on needs.

Cornwell is great, they have some loop holes in their hard line like 6pt. double sided box wrenches, and 60degree offset wrenches,....

I looked throught their catalog. No 6 point double box end wrenches. Did I missed it?

Were you looking at the Hazet or Cornwell catalog? In other words, are you looking for cornwell or hazet wrenches?

Just to get it out of the way - this is my first post.

After writing 2 different stories, and deciding that nobody cares about my history with SK and my recent disappointment in their QC, I will just my question:

Has anyone dealt with themotoringshop.net/com/biz/etc.?
They have a sale posted, 50% off Hazet, but that smells too good to be true. I couldn't find a BBB listing for them, and their warehouse on Google maps looks... how should I say this... not confidence inspiring.

I have ordered from Samstag Sales in the past. I have nothing but good things to say about them - they were really great. That being said, I am short on $$ and occasionally things do go on sale, right?

Uh, thanks. I thought it was pretty clear that I knew the URL.:headscrat

To anyone NOT affiliated with them, what has been your experience?

Ok, admittedly I fired that off a little quickly. Now that I see your icon (what are the user pictures called?), I see that you are one of the good guys - a fellow Volkswagen enthusiast. So again, sorry, I thought you were possibly financially involved with TMS.

billymade, ever heard anything about them? Order anything, or know someone who did?

I really don't have a clue to be honest; I put the link and their website header as a reference for other people to respond to... I have a bad habit of putting links in relation to what people are asking in a attempt to "clarify" that question... it has gotten so bad that I have been called the "link master" around here... LOL!!!! Maybe others can attempt to answer your question; personally, I haven't had any dealings with them, someone mentioned earlier they have the best prices for Hazet tools....

Why oh why did I click on that link.... now I really want to get my hands on that tube flaring toolkit on page 21 of the catalog and the 5-19mm stud extractor. Those both look to be very well made.

Cornwell doesn't have any double sided 6points anymore, they used to, nor are there any 60degree offset, I have the Hazet 60 degrees, and I have used Hazet double 6 points at a local VW shop years ago, maybe they let them fall by the wayside, I'll have to check.

I've got a set of Hazet 603 combination wrenches and they are by far the best wrenches I've ever used. I've also got Hazet 625 double box wrenches, an 882 socket set (3/8 + 1/4). I haven't got any of their 1/2" stuff, (but I'm pretty happy with my Kokens to be honest). I also have some Hazet pliers and screwdrivers. There is no question in my mind that Hazet is the best that there is. Hazet stuff is made to be the best quality possible, cost-no-object, just like Mercedes used to be 20+ years ago. Isn't it nice that there are still things out there like that?
The prices are pretty astonishing though....

Back to the picture of the VW Thing.... anyone notice teh expensive assistant tool cart and the the HF jackstands?

I also noticed that people like autoace are very passionate about where their tools are made. It seems strange though that so many people continue to dismiss Asian tools when they are proving themselves everyday. Discount Tire, for example, uses all Gray Pneumatic sockets. Asian made for sure...

Hi everyone. Sorry to bring this one back from the dead, but I was digging through a little-used box of mine and ran across an old Hazet ratchet (along with a Craftsman 9/32-drive socket set from the '30s). I'd forgotten I had it and my poking around on the 'net didn't turn up much besides this thread. Since it's unusual and since it needed a rebuild I thought I'd take some photos. If anybody has an idea when it was made I'd be interested in knowing.

A bigger version of that photo and shots of the internals are here:

Anyway, just thought I'd share a bit of old Germany with everyone. Cheers.

Hazet has a long tradition of high quality, with specific hand tools and VW/Audi specialty tools, only they carry. When an Asian company gains the type of tradition Hazet does, I may take them seriously, until then they are all dime a dozen to me, good or bad. No amount of triple chrome, and marketing strategy(GW looking like SO) is going to change my mind. That being said, It's just my thoughts, I can see why people buy the stuff. It's just not for me.

It's way cheaper to buy Hazet in Europe. It's less than half the price of any US supplier. Even if you add in the highway robbery shipping fees they charge you. If you plan to order a lot of stuff, you might consider taking a trip over there. Many retailers in Europe are not willing to ship outside of the EU.
If you're in the US and are just going to buy a few things, you can try www.chadstoolbox.com. Their prices aren't bad.

My Cornwell Dealer has the full Hazet line available, and gives warranty service. Prices are comparable to most I've seen.

Man I think those look gay, I have never figured out the draw to those things. It looks like a cart of hospital bed pans trussed together and outfitted with some hokey little wheels to me. (No offense intended to those inspired by it! :bounce:)

I think I might have just figured myself out. I am an old square that drives domestic products, and is certainly partial to domestic tools as well, at least for those I am paying a premium price for! Yup, that is it alright

I like Hazet tools, but I have to agree about the funny little tool box.:headscrat
