HD9 - What is it worth?

I recently purchased a Bend Pak HD-9 lift and find that my car won't fit on the lift properly. The wheel base is 144.5 inches and the runways are 164". When the front tire hits the stop, the rear tire is too far back for the ramp to block the rear tire from rolling backwards. Having this problem, I am trying to sell my HD9 to purchase the longer model.. the HD9XW. I have placed an ad in the classified section of the website, and have been contacted by a person offering $1500 for my lift. This person claims that he can purchase a HD9 shipped prepaid directly from the factory for $1800. I paid $2350 plus sales tax of approximately $120, and $100 to have the lift off loaded from the trailer and dropped at my home by the local lumber company. I have $2570 invested in this lift. I have asked this person where he got his price of $1800, because if I can get a replacement for less money, I am willing to let mine go for less money. He has declined to share this information with me. Does anyone know of any dealer that discounts the Bend Pak HD9 lift, and sells it for $1800? I have looked all over the Internet and called every dealer looking for the best price, but $2350 was the best that I could find at the time. Now, they seem to have gone up in price. I know that I will take a loss on this one, but I can't see selling it and taking almost a $800 hit. For that amount, I might as well just keep it and buy the longer one for the other side of the garage. What are your thoughts? Is this person BS'ing me or are there deals out there that I missed? Thanks Junk

The guy is probably talking about the D-7. That is Bend Pak's 7,000 lb import model (Dannmar) to meet a price point. It goes for $1,895.

The HD-9 is shown at $2,540. The HD-9XW is shown at $2,920.

What kind of car do you have that has a 144.5" wheel base?

My car is a 1978 Superior Cadillac Ambulance. It is a little over 20 feet long, 8' high, and weighs 8000 pounds. One of 10 built in 1978 and one of 30 for the total production run between 1977 & 1979. It is the last ambulance design to be built on a passenger style chassis, or what is more commonly known to be the Cadillac Commercial Chassis.

If he's telling the truth, what motivation would he have to hide this information from you? I vote BS.

Since he is a member on this site, I will share only his email, but not his name. If a Bend Pak HD-9 could be had for under $1800 delivered, as he claims, then I am certain that there would be a lot of people jumping onto that bandwagon. With any group purchase, the more people involved, the better it is for both the seller and the buyers.

I'm happy to work with you to get your new lift and the price you want, but if I give out the name of the group that's giving me the low prices then I risk alienating them which I can't afford to do. I can get the Bend Pak HD-9 four post delivered to the local shipping point for just under $1,800 so that's a deal I want to hold onto unless we have a firm commitment. You have to understand that by me buying your lift I lose recourse to the manufacturer and it's bound to have sustained some scratches so to save a couple of hundred is only worth so much. It does sounds like we can both benefit by working together. What kind of prices are you seeing for the lift you want to get?

I have an HD-9 also...looks to me your lift is ok, the back tires are on the rails past the approach ramp.. unless I am missing something in the pics.. if your lift is not level (slanting rearward) I can see you might have a problem, it is rare that a car would roll off a lift if it is level, I have never had a problem..also you could just put tire stops behind front tires for extra safety..another option would be to grind or cut off some of the overlap lip on approach ramp to totally clear your rear tires.. hope this helps.

I want to get a hydraulic rolling jack and my concern is that the car could move if the jack were to roll. Then I fear that the car might not be on the lift properly when I let it down. I want to live till I am 120, so I can't afford to make foolish mistakes at this stage of my life. I am already half way there. I've also toyed with the idea of moving the front stops forward slightly so the center of the wheel is closer to the cross beam. I don't like altering safety items, but sometimes you have to come up with a workable solution.

Just a quick note....There are some online companies using the Bend Pak pictures to promote their Chinese imports...They usually blur the Bend Pak name...I just received a letter from Bend Pak's legal team (it was a blanket letter, not specifically addressed to me) that threatens leagal action against companies that have been doing this. Apparently, there are some companies that have already been taken to court...If you see Bend Pak being marketed at cheaper prices than http://www.gesforless.com/ges4less/index.php then you can be pretty sure it isn't Bend Pak. The son of the guy that owns Bend Pak owns that site, from what I've been told....

What if you simply put a break in the front stops, so they were angled forward, allowing the car to roll forward another three inches in the lift? That looks like it would solve your problem.
Keep the mounting area flat against the end of the ramp, where it bolts, but then have a shop with a heavy press brake make an angle bend for the portion of the stop that protrudes above the deck.

I was thinking of something along the lines of what you have suggested. I was going to have the top section of the stop, the part that projects above the stop mounting point, sheared off. Then I was going to weld in a 3" horizontal section of steel. This would allow the front tires to still rest on the cross beam, while allowing the rear tires to move forward enough that the rear stops would come up and keep the car from rolling backwards. I have also been exploring the possibility of making some runway extensions. I do know that Bend Pak makes runway extensions for there bigger lifts. I asked if they had them for the smaller lifts, but the answer was no. I will have to just put some more thought into exactly how I want to proceed. Thanks for the suggestion.

e-autolifts.com are cheaper but not much couple dollars. thehd-9 is still $2500. I would cut the lip or use a safety chain. it be cheaper in the long run

Is the ambulance something that you intend to keep forever?

The money you will lose in having to change out to a bigger lift is probably more than the value of the ambulance...

Just IMHO, but both the sales tax and the loading/unloading fee are not meaningful except to you. Neither is value added, so they are lost money.

The rest of the potential buyer's story is just smoke blown up you know where...

To be honest I would not worry about the fact that the ramp doesn't fall down enough to act as a wheel stop. I have a Ford F-350 crew cab long bed truck that fits the exact same way on the lift where I used to work. The mechanic used it all the time to service my 7,800 lb truck and had no concern at all. If it makes you nervous get some good wheel stops and put them behind the front wheels or ratchet strap/chain it to the lift so it can't roll off.

this thread is over 5 years old.

Not to jump on a new member too harshly, but rand7171 please, when you are perusing old threads (and all new members do to some extent), please realize that steel has gone up considerably in the past five years, and clearly explains the price increase.

OOPS, my BAD, im a newby. Didnt look at the dates. Duh. Sorry everybody.

Not a problem. I get to reading a thread, and thinking, "wow, this is a long thread for a new one I hadn't seen" then finally I realize that it is old and has been resurrected, or someone else does and points it out. And I know I've done the same thing before. Its hard to remember to look at the date in the corner of the post, I know I don't.

Glad for you to be here on GJ, enjoy and participate.
