Headlights on lawnmowers - WTF??

It is well after 10pm here, and finally cool enough to open the windows, and all I hear is a neighbor mowing his lawn, which he can only do because he has lights on his mower.

I have a neighbor that uses a leaf blower to clear off her patio at 11:15 PM, in the dark, she does not turn on her patio lights.

I have another neighbor that attaches a flashlight to his rake so he can rake leaves at night.

Nonetheless, I'd go over and talk to him nicely and tell him that you go to sleep around 10pm, and would prefer if he kept the noise down after that time...

I can hear his response now... go F*** yourself!

Noise ordinances?

Around here, especially during the 4th of July period it can take police 45 minutes or longer to respond. When they finally arrive the noise has stopped and you get blamed for "crying wolf."

I'd love the kind of lifestyle where I didn't have to scramble to get the lawn done. Poor guy is probably stressed to get it done in his brief windows of availability between rain while worrying about how his neighbors will judge him if the grass gets too long. Be thankful you have a neighbor that cares about how his property looks.

yep - i've mowed @ 9PM a few times before, but i'm finishing up by then. IMHO, 10PM is too late for the typical residential neighborhood with 1/4 acre lots.

weekdays - 8AM-9PM
weekends - 9:30AM-9PM

My next door neighbour use to roll his garbage/recycling bins out at midnight from the side of the house. I opened up the blinds one day and turned on my powerful flashlight and shined a spotlight on him. He froze and looked up at my window, I kept light light on him the entire time until he was done. After that he never did it again.

WTF, who wants to be mowing at 10pm. I live in in a typical residential area and people usually call it quits about dusk. Its a older community so people usually sitting down to dinner and calling it a night. If I'm doing garage work I usually stop running the saws and loud tools once in gets dark. I'll run them no longer than a hour after dark if in middle of project that needs to get done. I think it just being respectful neighbor.

This, regardless of inside or outside, all the loud tools (pneumatics, saws, etc) turn off when the sun goes down.

there a commercial lawn farm next to my house but its about a mile wide farm, they cut at night, about once a week, all night long. I dont even hear them anymore, so use to it. its about once every two weeks, not a big mower but big yellow sod cutter, that cuts and rolls

Yup. Or at least I feel real bad about it for a few minutes...

I really don't understand why someone would want to mow at 10pm. Then again, I don't understand why anyone would want to mow at 10am, noon, 2pm, 3:37pm, or any time really. Mowing is pretty much the biggest waste of time and energy ever created.

But, every time I go for a nice long motorcycle ride, I pass hundreds of vast, immaculate lawns, owned by people who apparently can't think of anything better to do than farm grass. Or maybe I'm the crazy one.

I've done it, I live in the country, not at 10pm maybe 8-9pm, perks of living in the country. I respect my neighbors too much to do it at 10pm, YMMV

I actually used my headlights again last night for the last few minutes of mowing, but it was only 9:45

I could be wrong but I doubt that the OPs neighbor wants to be mowing at 10PM. That's probably the only time he (or she) could get to it. When I was in my 20s that's when I cut the grass. And, I had to leave work early to get home that early.

Sheep would be a solution!
Then no one would complain about the noise!
Come Fall you can butcher them for winter meat!

i'd love to but my annoying neighbors who sleep at night would whine

LOL, like the people who move into my town (that has a drag strip) and then complain about the noise at night.

If a guy is out shooting beer cans at night I could understand but a guy working on his property give me a break.

I'm trying to figure out how to put lights on my push mower, because when fall gets here I can't get home in time to mow in the daylight unless it's on Saturday or Sunday. Then if it rains on those days...It's dark here by 7pm towards the end of October.

Headlights are the 2nd best non critical mower accessory after a beer holder.

Its still 100* after dark here in AZ so I wait till dusk to mow.

I had a former neighbor that mowed his grass after dark all the time. He left it in a low gear and it took him forever.

At 10 PM in Idaho during July it is dusk, I could see finishing off the lawn then. If it bothers you, wander over and ask him if he would run his mower a little earlier instead.

Problem with that is during the winter months when it gets dark at 530. I usually push any outdoor work to weekend. Still I shut things down at reasonable hour.

Well if he's doing it all the time I can surly see why the OP would complain.

99% of people are courteous and reasonable.

its that 1% where you need an HOA and rules. IMO

I will add that do it once or twice- or have a 5:30AM concrete pour in the summer- and nobody will be complaining....

Exactly why I got rid of my lawn and went with rock and drought-resistant plants.

Yup. And if he doesn't cut it then someone else will complain.

Of course this is all speculation on my part. It's entirely possible that the guy is just doing it to piss people off.

i have a neighbor that does the same thing, 7- 8 pm especially in the spring and fall. we have the windows closed and A/C on most of the summer, but when it's a little cooler in the spring and early fall all our windows are open.

i think his mower has one speed, S L O O O W....

neither him or his wife work, and are home all day long, about the only time i see him is early evening, i think he's combining a lot of liquor with his medications, and cant function until late in the day.

he's been in and out of the hospital over the last month, so ive been cutting his grass for him.

i try to be the kind of neighbor that doesnt make a bunch of noise in the early or late hours. i cut grass on the weekends, after 9 or 10 am. if i'm in the garage i make sure my stereo isnt blasting, or the air compressor isnt running after it gets dark.
my harley has drag pipes on it, when i leave the house i "fly under the radar" until i get out of the 2 block square area of my little neighborhood, just so nobody can complain..

You live in Idaho and can hear your neighbors. Must live in the "city".

The only time I ever use my headlights on the mower is maybe the last couple times I cut for the season. It gets darker earlier and I have to turn them on towards the end of the cut. I don't think i've ever cut past 7PM and try not to do it on the weekends either. That doesn't work out sometimes though with the weather.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on the mower at 10PM with the lights on for the simple reason of being eaten alive by bugs.

My neighbor is always out until 10pm mowing, he crams the mowing in one night a week so the other six he can go out and make as much noise as possible on his two wheeled noise maker

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I've gotten home from work at 8pm and absolutely had to mow with storms coming in the next few days. Never mowed later than 10pm, but I've been finishing up right at 10 a few times.

I've snowblowed with the lights on at all hours, 11pm, 3am, 5am, whatever it takes.

It's just as annoying as guys who run out at 5:30am to mow.

Or the guy who takes 3 hours to mow a 1/4 acre with a riding mower. Constantly turning the blade on and off. I don't know what he's doing over there. It's not like he's being meticulous, it looks like **** when he's done, lol.

Or the guy who has a yard full of roots and hits every one of them on every pass. I don't know how that guys mower even cuts. I bet that blade looks like the rocky mountains. I mean it barely gets up to speed before he slams into something. VrroooWHACK putt putt vroooWHACK putt putt...

There's a guy nearby that mows at night, even weed-whacks at night wearing a head lamp. He's far enough away that I can only hear it if I have the windows open, so it doesn't really bother me. Plus, at least he's quick about it.

You have waaay too much time on your hands watching the mowing habits of all these neighbours...

This is just wrong.

It is a little better than the last three weeks, which have been all mortar fire (illegal fireworks) until after midnight, which litter my yard with burned cardboard fragments and keep me up wondering when my trailer full of branches bound for the dump will catch fire.

On those nights, close windows, turn on A/C.
Problem solved.

Concern for my neighbors, do you mean the jack-hats who call the HOA on me if my grass is too high or if one of those "grow 3 feet overnight" weeds popup. Or the other jack-hats who have their landscapers out there at 6am?

I spent 50 years being considerate, now I simply do not give a fsck about neighbors.

If I didn't have to work, I'd mow it at midnight, pull the muffler off the mower and go real slow.

I have run my jd lawn tractor pulling a commercial cyclone rake collecting leaves up to 10pm in the fall some times. By the time i get home from work, eat, bang the wife i'ts way dark. I have 1.5 acres of old growth oaks and maples. Also will use back pack leaf blower to make piles throughout the yard then **** them up with the cyclone rake. Ear plugs ear muffs on i don't hear anything also use led head ban light. Anybody know if i can replace my stock bulbs on a jd x300 foe led or something brighter. Fall is the most stressful time for me because of the damn leaves
