Heat in oversized Garage

Hey everyone, new guy here. I just purchased a home with an oversized detached garage. The previous owner had propane heat in there but took everything and now looking to install before it gets too cold as the first floor has the water tank and a bathroom. The main garage is 28x28 but I have 18' ceilings and the 2 garage doors are approx 12'x8'.

Now as far as the walls, the garage is built into a hiillside so the back wall is all cement. The inside wall is your typical insulated wall and the outside wall is a mix of cement and insulated wall. The bathroom is off the first floor with the water tank and main water lines. Its 12'x5'.

I was told to go with a 75k btu propane heater for quick heating or at least a 60k unit minimum. Dont want to break the bank but willing to consider everything. Want to do this once as I plan to be in the house 10+ years. Thanks

Jake

Do the mini split. I just put in a mitsubishi mr. slim. Its ductless so you wont have to mess up the walls. Its very quiet as well. Very happy with the purchase.

Regardless of what you wind up with for a heater, the 18' ceilings will be an issue holding the heat. Consider ceiling fan/s or similar to pull the heat off the ceiling.

Be sure to get some water, sand, and stone in that cement wall before the wind blows it away. How did they get away with building a wall out of cement? Is it, maybe, a concrete wall?

Sorry, had to do it.

We don't know your location so perhaps you can tell us what your climate zone is?

there are 2 ceiling fans...it doesnt need to be 70 in there...just bearable in the winter to do stuff..maybe if I post some pics it will help.

You will soon learn that THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN OVERSIZED GARAGE!

Just kidding, but someone had to say it. Nice building you have there.

haha...well I say oversized bc of the ceilings and doors. Garage looks like it was used for commercial trucks form the original owner so not a "typical" car guy garage. I hear you though!

First, I'd finish the concrete wall in the bathroom with studs, insulation and sheet rock, then I'd throw an inexpensive oil-filled space heater (or two) in the bathroom for this winter just to get by. I'd spend the winter researching a shop-sized solution and buy the beast on sale in the spring. My $0.02.

getting there....a small heater will go in there for sure if the large one is adding too much cost

Jake,
You need to get something in the bathroom now to keep things from freezing and getting you areal big mess. I would plug in one of those oil filled electric radiators like someone else mentioned at least till you figure out which way to go.

Do you have natural gas available ? That will be a lot cheaper to operate than Propane, if you have it.

It's ok in there now. I think bc it's built into the hill it's kind of insulating it. Went out last night about 10pm and it was 34 outside. 54 in garage. The next week is showing same temps at night and day.

Been in the mid 20s here at night and low to mid 30s during the day the last week or so and it's still 51-52 throughout the garage. Bought a Hot Dawg 60k btu unit and got it in last week. The propane tank should be delivered within a couple weeks.

I like that sink, looks like a full 2" drain.

The landscaping was done very well and the rockery looks fantastic. It takes an artist to make a rockery look like that.
