I have a 2 car garage already with a gas furnace,I only keep it at 55 degrees,my issue is the furnace room is taking a lot of my space,it’s in a 6x8 room in the rear corner, bought the house this way, what is a replacement heater that I could mount on the ceiling and still keep it warm. The garage is completely insulated.I ask this because I have seen 20 different answers after I did a search.

We just finished a detached shop and used a split system for heating and cooling. Blower unit mounts high on the wall with the heat pump outside. Very happy with it so far.

Does the unit really need a 6'x8' room to operate? Why not just remove the room and push the air handler into the corner? Heck, hang it from the ceiling. Unless your just wanting to spend money on a new system, if the current unit it operating as desired I would keep it.

Im able to keep my 24x24 2 car at 55F no matter the outside temp with two electric 1,000 watt heaters... 80K would be like a blast furnace in there.

The room is a large 6x8 for the furnace,I’m looking for something smaller and to gain all my space back in the garage, someone mentioned I could hang the furnace off the wall towards the ceiling.

I have a 50K for my 24x24 with no insulation and that thing handles it no problem. I might go through a 100lb propane tank in 1 year.

Maybe I’ll scrap the furnace and go with a 50k heater so I can gain back my space and hang it from the ceiling.

Do you run it throughout the winter, or do you just use it when you are working in there?

I run a 50k hanging shop heater in my 750SF insulated garage in NH and it is more than sufficient. 30k would probably be fine. I do heat full time to 60-65 unless I am away, and that reduces the work load of the heater.

My AC has a small built in heater, 12k I think. Before I installed the shop heater, it was working fine in temps down to 30. But we can see as cold as -20F though not yet this year — probably not much worse than 0F so far.

I don't know what kind of furnace needs a 6x8 room. Must be a dinosaur. If you go to an overhead heater that runs all the time buy a Reznor or Modine. What is the sq ft you are heating?

What size to heat my 300 sq ft garage. Somewhat insulated. I would like to keep it 65 degrees in winter. Cold here in Colorado

I only use it when i'm working out there, which is usually most weekends. A lot of variables, i know.

No, that actually helps quite a bit. Your usage actually lines up pretty well with what I had calculated as a "worst case" heating scenario for my garage. When you said that you didn't have insulation and that you could make it through most of the winter, I was wondering if I'd made a mistake with my numbers or if you were using it intermittently.

IMHO, any intelligent answer will need to consider your location and the hours of your intended use.

Without knowing where 'here' is, any suggestions for the size of the heater are just guesses...you need to do a heat loss calculation that takes into account your location, the construction of the building (its size including width, depth and height, how much insulation, how many windows and doors, etc.) and what temperature you want to keep it at. An HVAC contractor can do that for you, or there are any number of online calculators available. If you do it yourself, I'd suggest running the numbers through several different calculators to make sure you get a consensus, as they aren't all necessarily going to be accurate.

I've worked in shops with a hanging heater and glad I'll never need to do that again unless they give me a real tall ladder to work from up there where the heat is.

Look at how little space an wall furnace needs and they can be bought to function with a thermostat without purchased power. Try backing up to a hanging heater to warm your ****.:)
