My home has two attached garages that total ~1130 sq ft. The two garages are separated by a wall that has opening in it (5 foot wide and 7.5 foot tall). I want to put a heater in garage 2 (which doesn't share a wall with the house.). The heater will be used to try and keep both garages around 40-45 degrees in the winter. We live in central Iowa where winter temps can range from -10 to +30 degrees F. In addition, on occasion I may want to heat the garage to 65-70 degrees when working out there (oil changes, vehicle repairs / maintenance, cleaning deer, etc.). I will probably install a sliding 5' barn type door to isolate garage 2 when I will be working in only this area. Garage 1 is used primary to park a vehicle, but I would like to keep it close to the same temperature as garage 2 during the night to de-thaw the parked vehicle. I understand I have a bit off a bottleneck with only the 5 x 7 opening between the two garages. Opening can't be made larger without significant structural changes. My questions is how should I size this heater?
I was thinking along the lines of 75K reznor unit (UDAP-75 V3) to insure I could heat the entire space, but am starting to wonder if this will be over-sized. I am not worried about the little bit of extra initial cost, but want things to run efficiently and avoid problems that may be caused by short cycling. My plans are to install the heater in the upper left corner of garage 2, aimed directly at the 5' opening that adjoins garage 1.
I was also thinking about putting the heater on a programmable thermostat that will keep the garage heated during the evening / night to de-thaw the vehicles, but not run during during the weekdays when the garage sits empty (while we are at work).
Both garages will be well insulated (R19 in the walls). What level of insulation do you recommend above the ceiling. I was thinking about going ahead and insulating to R38.
