I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I might be able to get for this jack if I list it in the classified section? I think it would be a good rebuild for someone who is willing to put the time and money into this jack and has the extra parts needed to fix it's problems.

Hello everyone,

I know this is an older thread, but I am hoping it can get some traction.

I stumbled upon the site because I was lucky enough to get a jack, just like the one in this post from my step-father. It had been his father's. I'm guessing it is from the 40s or 50s, but I'm not really sure. Everything was seized, but now that I've got all the parts greased and moving there appears to be a hydraulic leak. It leaks both under a load and at rest. I'm hoping to get it repaired, or do it myself. I called one local guy who says he won't use any non-factory supplied rebuild kits (which he said there are none for the original Hein-Werner jacks).

I am hoping someone can help me locate a repair kit for this jack. Like the original poster stated, there is no marking plate with a model or serial number. All I can find is the "2 TON" stamp on the lifting arm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it's the same one as the OP in this thread, it's Hein Werner M. In regards to kits, shop around there are lots of suppliers still assembling kits for these jacks. My signature is one of those suppliers for pricing comparisons.

Thanks for the quick responses. Any idea what information I would need to give a supplier to make sure I get the correct kit? As far as I can tell, it looks identical to the one in the original post. Thanks.

IRC there was some variances on the M Series, I can't speak for all suppliers but HPS in my signature has a Universal kit to cover all series. If you have some time give them a call and ask for Steve, they don't have a fancy website but if you can stomach talking to actual person you would be hard pressed to find anyone more qualified in the hydraulic department. I believe they have been in business for over 70 years between the 2 locations.

An additional question: I've been wondering what makes a 2 ton vs 4 ton jack? Is it only the hydraulic ram? The body of the jack is the same? I was wondering if it is possible to "upgrade" the capacity of the jack since it appears to need a rebuild anyway. Thanks again.

In some cases, more so on the vintage stuff prior to everyone being infactuated with numbers it was possible to squeeze some extra lifting capacity out of some models and still be within The PSI range of the seals and framework. In this case, you would be asking way too much as the bore size just won't support the jump from 2 to 4 tons with factory seals, not to mention comparing a GH (4 ton) to your M in regards to the frame size is quite significant. Long story short, a jacks Tonnage for the most part is a combination of cylinder bore size and framework/casters to handle the load.

Called HPS last week. I asked for Steve but talked talked to someone else. I have his name written down, but don't recall it at the moment. He said he needed more specific information. He also said he had a form he could send me with measurements to help me narrow it down. I never recieved it, but I will try back this week. I did end up finding a number cast on the bottom of the hydraulic unit today, though. I'm wondering if it would be helpful in identifying more specific information about the jack. I believe the number is
18-556-1. Any thoughts? Thanks again.

Did you te them you had a Hein Werner M series Jack? It should be kit 5540 which is a universal and should cover both pump size variations, but you should verify that with them prior to purchasing. If I haven't already said, it might be wise to tear into the Jack prior to buying a kit, hard parts are pretty much non existent in NOS form, and what you do find will be pricey and you might run into finish issues that need to be addressed.

I did tell him it was a 2 ton M-series H-W. He said there were universal kits but he needed more information. Thanks for the heads up about tear down.
