helicoil issue

i have a small blind hole in a turbochahrger that is stripped out. it holds the turbo oil tank in place. (bolt on each side hole in the middle hole for oil drain with a oring) the helicoil tap is tapered and the first few threads are for alignment. the hole itself is about as deep as the helicoil so i need every thread i can get.

is there a sti tap the has threads from the edge and will bottom out in the hole so i can get the helicoil installed? the tap in the kit only taps about half the hole and then the bolt binds in the hole since there arent enough threads to tighten the tank completly against the turbo itself causing a leak

8mmx1.25 thread pitch and bolt

You can sacrifice the tap if you wish to perform the one job by grinding the tap flat on the end one thread at a time until you accomplish what you are after.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to pick up another heli coil set and grind the tap down into a bottoming style tap.

This is the way to do it if you need it now. I do this a lot at work.

Good idea, but would get as much thread cut first, then cut the tip of the tap off and run it to the bottom.

i wasnt aware you could grind the taps down. i thought they were made from hardend steel. i ordered a botom tap to try and get this mess fixed.

They are made from hardened steel or HSS. Easy to grind on a bench grinder. Sometimes I even grind a bit of lead and relief on the tap to help it cut with its new cutting profile.

This isn't my pic, but it's a decent example. Not perfect.

You need HELICOIL taps, NOT regular M8.
If you buy a second Helicoil tap, you will be tooled up for the future, so you got that going for you.
If its not too late, tap as deep as you can, then grind down the tap and carry on.

They sell MANY different Timesert insert sizes. Good going on the repair, but when that helicoil gives out (because they love to do that), you gotta go Timesert. They're incredible. I've never once had one fail on me. Haha, cannot say the same for helicoil!

small 8mm bolt actually 2 of them holding a turbo oil tank. no real stress here. i have used timeserts and they have their place just not a good fit for this .

I do not understand all the helicoil hate when they come up. I have been using them for 20 years in a professional setting. I have never seen one fail.

Timeserts are a wise investment imho. If there is enough meat surrounding the bore to be tapped where the timesert wil be installed.

I have been using Helicoils hobby setting for over 40 years and never seen one fail. Why all the hate?

I agree with the others. I have used Helicoils for years and never had one that was properly installed fail. While I worked at a Caddy dealer I have installed many NorthStar head gaskets using TimeSerts and think that they are an excellent product. The kits GM provided with all the alignment tools made it very easy to get a perfect install every time. While the TimeSert looks to be a much better product, in reality either method will produce good results.

Helicoils they are prone to being mishandled more than anything else. when used properly they are fine. the different designs have different pro/cons. Timesert, is the way to go if something needs to come apart frequently, or might not seal not for the solid threads, for example. But each application specific is relevant and other options are out there for a reason.

They are made if hardened steel but hardened steel is quite grindable, if there is such a word.

I used helicoils on two studs when I rebuilt my diesel truck's GT2 turbo. Helicoils are awesome when they are used in the right application.

I've never seen helicoil hate, ever.

Timeserts are useful but helicoils are even more useful because of the reduced wall thickness requirements.
