I've been lurking and reading some of the info on vises etc. I have a Reed 205 1/2 and a charles parker 433 1/2 . I want to build a HD base for the Reed but still want to be able to move it when needed due to having a small shop . Looking for ideas. The Parker will be mounetd to a bench. Thanks

DZ: I started a thread last year to get some ideas about vise and grinder stands and here's the link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

i'm sure you'll get some good ideas here for your vises. in the meantime can you post up pictures of your vises. also does your Reed 205.5 have 5.5 inch wide jaws and how much does it weigh?

welcome to our group and if you haven't seen it yet we have a pretty big vise thread that you can also post pictures of your vises on.

cheers

Welcome to the GJ from Maine. I have a decent sized vise and it has a big round base, I can tilt it a little and roll it to where I want to go. There are much better designs that others have made and the thread that Drives posted is a good one to start with.

Thanks for the welcome. Hey Drivesitfar yes the jaws are 5 1/2 " wide and it weighs 120 lbs and has a swivel base. I need to fix one of the locking lugs as it has been cobbled sometime in it's past and the other side works as it is supposed to. I did a teardown and repaint on the Charles Parker it looks pretty good. I will get some pics for both of them and post them in the vise thread.

DZ: go ahead and post a couple pictures of your vises on this thread so you can learn how if you don't already know and maybe we can help you solve an issue. or we just love big old vise pictures and we'll just admire yours. i use the paperclip just above where we write our posts to attach pictures sort of like an email which works pretty good. there are other ways to post big pictures if you like and ask if you want to know how.

That Reed 205.5 sounds like a keeper. you might have seen a few of my vises i own on the vise thread, but my Reed 4C is at the top of the list because Reed made great vises.

Ok I took a few pics of the two vises . They are setting on top of a old anvil with a standard 3 ft door in the background for reference. I just finished the Parker and need to start working on the Reed So here goes with the pics. I will also go to the vise thread and put some pics there .
