How's it going everyone? I have been scrolling through all the amazing shop threads since I found GJ fairly recently. I'll be honest, as obsessed as I have been with wanting a garage/shop, I never thought there was a board for it. I stumbled upon it recently while more serioulsy researching my shop options--I only wish I had found this place sooner!

As for me, I'm a freelance photographer and I got my start in publishing--BITD I was editor of Auto Sound & Security and Import Racer! magazines. I am into old school VWs, minitrucks, car stereos and BMX bikes. I need more space for these hobbies as well as photography.

Twelve years ago I gave up my So-Cal 3 car-garage (and the 91 hell-commute) to get this 1/3 acre property in AZ with one of the main goals being to build a 1000 sqft shop. Well, that didn't work as planned--such is life! Over the years I have had 3 different ideas but various reasons, restrictions and needs has made the 3rd car tandem addition seem like the most logical choice--that or I am moving back to a house with a 3 car garage! Anyway, It will be some time before I even think about breaking ground, but I started researching and planning a little more seriously and mocked up this reasonably-to-scale 3D model complete with an oval window, Cal-Look bug!

Man, Auto Sound & Security was like my bible in the late 90's. I was a young teen that couldn't even drive yet but I read every word of every issue dreaming about the day that I would own the high end stereo equipment that graced those pages. I can't tell you how sad I was when all the car audio publications started to disappear.

I drew the 3D rendering myself in SketchUp--it's a free program and fairly easy to use. there are some good tutorials on Youtube about it as well.

Mires, I feel you--Auto Sound was my life. I was a stereo installer and I competed in IASCA. I lived 12-volt and my passion/obsession combined with a little luck got me the job at AS&S. It was good times for sure! I too miss the mags and the entire 12-volt scene.

Here is a build I did for a customer way back...

How can you possibly not enjoy the 91? Bumper to bumper from Anaheim to Corona, crawling at the speed of a turtle, people getting pissed off and pulling guns.....who in their right mind would want to get away from that? Oh, yeah, ME!!! I kinda miss it though.......

Okay, back to reality....dont miss it anymore.

Welcome to The Garage.

MP: is there a reason why you are building a stand alone 3rd car garage and not attaching it to your existing 2 car? since it's so close i would think by attaching it if permits allow that you'd save maybe a little money by not having to build an entire wall, but you wouldn't have to go outside in the 120 degree heat to get to your 3rd garage. also you could tie in your existing AC and heat (like you'd really need some in AZ).

i do like the rendering you posted cause it looks like you already built it.

good luck and welcome to the forum.

also since this is the introduction area you might get more member's eyes on your questions if you start a thread.

I'm back! I know it's been awhile--sorry to those I failed to reply to! I recently got back into this project and made a post on the FB page. Here it is:

I have been a long time fan of the site and this page, now I hope I can get some advice especially from those who have built an attached garage addition. I bought this property in Scottsdale, AZ with grand plans for a 1000sqft detached shop. Those plans were dashed over a decade ago by ridiculous setbacks (10ft on the sides and 25ft in the back) and a general contractor who quoted me $100K to build rectangular box with no interior... Recently I have gotten serious about a 2 car tandem garage addition to my existing 20x20 standard 2 car garage. It would be roughly 42ft deep, 13ft wide, no interior--just 3 walls and a roof with a garage door at each end. So I contacted an architect--guess what he quoted me? Yup, $100K. I was shocked. That sounds like way too much for what it is. I know material prices are up, but still. So I am here asking for any info you are willing to share. I am looking to do as much of this myself as possible. I can possibly frame it myself, I have a roofer and I would need to hire out concrete and stucco. Anything inside I can do myself. I think I can get the job done for way less--Am I delusional or are they? TIA for any advice you can offer!

I would really appreciate any pointers from anyone who has done this--especially in Scottsdale, AZ

Does anyone know of an affordable architect?

How about a good person for:

Stucco
Concrete

I have a great roofer (Durafoam) and framer although I might try that myself. I will handle all the interior and electrical myself.

Has anyone ever got a variance in Scottsdale, AZ? I hear it's not all that easy.

How about getting permits here? Nightmare, or just a lot of work?

Here is a new version of the Photoshop version of the intended addition. The shading and perspective are off but I think this one shows it better than the last version above. Drivesitfar was right, it does look detached in the first pic I did. This one is a little better but not perfect--the idea is that the addition is attached to the house.

Welcome back, we missed ya'!!!
Just as a pointer, this thread is in the "introduce Yourself" section. if you want traction and viewers for a garage build, start a new thread in Garage Gallery section.
And good luck. Keep the pictures coming.

I am near 64th and Thunderbird, I am finally breaking ground in January.

I have permits approved and my build is 1286 sq ft. 10x18 garage with workshop on side.

Would love to share with you and i'm right around the corner, I may need some of your contacts if you don't mind sharing.

I have concrete/stucco/electrical/dry wall people but I need roofing

So sorry I didn't realize I was posting all this in the Introduce Yourself section... (thanks for pointing me in the right direction Turbowoodworker!) I have started a new thread on my garage addition in the correct place ( I hope :ROFLMAO:). The build and videos are well underway and I am currently trying to get the stucco done. Check it out here: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/the-longshot-garage-addition.514445/
