After finding this site a while back and being a lurker ever since I wanted to say hello and the amount of creativity on this site is incredible.

I am actually at the planning stages of building a 40x30 garage/shop and would have like some input along with some questions I haven’t found answered so far from searching. The garage is going to be a jack of all trades shop so to speak, but primarily be used for tinkering on my two Toyota 4WD’s along with our daily drivers. The biggest one being a Toyota Sequoia. At the moment I have decided on two garage doors one being a 9x10 (lift bay) and the other a 16x10. The plan I created originally had the 9x10 door 6 feet away for the side of the garage and have recently changed it to 3 feet. I am still undecided which route to go. I basically would like to have enough room between the lift post and the wall to be able to do suspension and axle work. I am looking at the Bendpak XPR‐10AS‐LP. The specs say 145” which comes to 12 feet exactly so I am assuming the ceiling needs to at least 12.5 feet? I notice they offer an optional 24 inch extension, is this needed with the biggest vehicle I have being a Toyota Sequoia? I am sure I will have more questions as time goes on, it’s just right now I am needing to get the building drawn out for the city before I do anything else. Hopefully you can see the sketchup I have added, if not let me know.

Thanks.

you have a bench in the back of your space. add storage racks everywhere you can conceive of having them, rolling tool boxes also. this will make it easier to plan the work flow.

personally, i prefer most of my "bench" type space to be islands, rather than against the walls. this allows easier access to all sides of what i am working on. i hang a retractable extension cord (like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000256R9G/?tag=atomicindus08-20) above it.

Welcome. I'm in the planning stage on my project as well. I can't answer your direct question, but I suggest taking your time in the planning stage. Put the cars, counters, cabinets, and a human shape the size of you in your sketchup model and drawings to really get a sense of the size versus where you and you tools need to fit. I've made a lot of changes of mine on paper already by doing this step.

Thanks for the input...and agreed. The goal is to have a "mobile" work area also. The retractable extension cord and air hose reel is on my list as well...Thanks for the link btw!

assuming the building is 30' deep (based on the shape of your drawing), i would not put the lift near the garage door, i would put it in the back half of the garage. this way, you will have room to bring other things in while you work on something in the back. this will also keep things from getting trapped behind the lift as things (that are hard to move) accumulate in the rest of the shop.

Yeah...Its 30 deep and 40 wide. In the drawing I have the posts at 15 feet. Sorry for the miscommunication, when I said side wall I was referring from the left lift post to the wall of the garage not front to back.

welcome

we were 20+ years in Roanoke, Dublin and owned Elk Creek Dragway for a few of those years. Now in TN, but hoping to be back in SWVA one day!

MR: in your first drawing are you convinced you need that bench to be L shaped? i might omit the portion on the wall next to your lift and maybe put a bench along the back wall. or if you don't need that much bench space i use commercial racking and i put metal cabinets, rolling toolboxes and benches under them so i can have storage above.

welcome again to GJ and hope you enjoy your new shop. a lot of new members think starting a shop build is the best way to get answers, but you reading other members posts and asking questions on those might even be better. even with as many posts as i have it sometimes takes a while to get a good thread going so your call and best of luck.

cheers
