This isn't a gold mine by any means but I thought I'd share it. To get the full jist of the story go to this link 1st. and play the John Prine song, then come back and read the post while it's playing on your computer. (Hey, there's nothin on tv right?)

If you have the song playing from the above link, carry on. :)
I live downtown in one of the last surviving houses so I decided to make a court yard instead of a lawn in the tiny front yard. While I'm laying the bricks this old timer walks by and I stopped my work to give him a friendly "Hello". We wound up chatting for 20 minutes or so and then became friends in the following months. He's 87 now and calls me up to see if I can haul some plywood away because he and his wife are moving to a care home. I oblige him and he asks "do you want this stuff, I'm throwing it out otherwise". Here's the goods:

Some magnets and this demagnetizer/magnetizer thing

I'm not sure what this is, it looks a little like a chain breaker but I thing it's something else: Any help on this one?

Last but not least is this cool jack.It says "Reliable - Ashland Ohio over -No. 1 - Pat. April 1607 - IC Elite MFG. CO.
I've wire brushed the patent date and viewed it through a magnifier and it does look like 1607.

Sorry for the long post, hope you liked John Prine and don't forget to say "Hello in there" next time you spot some old ancient eyes! It's rewarding even without the material things.

At my last house, I had an old man stop by as I was working on my truck. We bench raced for awhile and he invited me over to see his Grand National. He hadn't driven it in awhile and it needed a good tune up and some other things. Over the next few months, we got it running again. He was greatful and he offered me all of his tools. He had a nice collection. Worth far more than what I had. He said that his own kids never appreciated working on their own stuff and would likely just sell his stuff. I expressed me genuine gratitude but declined his offer. I couldn't, in good conscience, take them. We still talked over the next few months until I got called up to go back to Iraq. By the time I got back, he had moved in with his son and I never heard from him again.

That is a puzzler for me because it sure looks like a six or it could just be a casting fault. I thought possibly there is a patent in 1607 in England by a parent company (just guessing). Anyway I sure like the jack.

The" little handle thing" is a fuse puller.

Thanks gorilla! That's nice to know, now I'll have to find a new use for it. And thanks everyone else for the comments. I did offer to pay for the items but he's been around enough to know this kind of stuff is probably worth more as a gift. There are some real nice items that I will treasure and will be reminded of my new found buddy.

Good on ya for letting that man know there are still some good people around. And good on him for giving his tools a good home.

Listen to those tools - they done got a story or two to tell...

Whenever I go to an estate sale, I often feel sad that no family member wants the tool collection. I went to one and was so taken back by the quality of the tools that were not taken yet, the nephew running the sale gave me a great deal and then threw in a bunch more items because he wanted them to go to a good home.

Sorry to say it, but very far off. Its 1907. If it was pre Civil War, the casting and machine work would not be anywhere near that quality, but much more primitive.

My mechanical floor jack by Elite Mfg of Ashland can be seen here:

For those interested, I have been painting it and will soon post pics of it restored and hopefully working.

They designed a few different styles of jacks and have several jack patents you can see via google patents. Unfortunately, mine isnt there, and I could be wrong but I dont see yours either. The last mention of them I could find was a 1935 ad, so if you find anything newer, please let me know.

Enjoy your new to you tools.
