Help, I have an old Abbey - MADE IN ENGLAND oiler. I can not find out much info on it for example (A) Age, or (B) Years made, (C) Type of oiler (D) Was this for auto, or trains or what ? (E) Rare or not?

It is about 14 inches tall -- can anyone help me? Thanks KIJIJI-OILER ENGLAND-57.jpgKIJIJI-OILER ENGLAND-60.jpgKIJIJI-OILER ENGLAND-64.jpg

It is a bit odd to see the thumb pump sticking out of the spout and not down into the oil reservoir. Looks like the spout unscrews so you can check out how it works. Not sure how that could work with the can verticle but if you have to tip it sideways to get oil to flow out the spout why have a pump at all? Is it just a valve and vent?....Neat can. Ed.

I can't help you with the manufacturer, but I agree with Ed that it's very odd to see a plunger in a spout, and I agree with Otg that it's wartime at least and probably older, as old as 1920s, and looks modified. We have a vintage oilers thread, linked here, if you want to page through it. I am confident there are no oilers like it (that is, with plungers in spouts...), and I did a search to see if anyone else has posted an oiler made by "Abbey", which turned up to nil.

Looks like a second one to me, ruling out the homemade modification theory. Can you take the spout off and take a photo, with flash on, of the inside? I'm curious what is on the end of the plunger.
Here are the pictures you asked for -- Hope that helps -- and let me know if you still need something different for a picture. Also that picture I submitted above of SOMETHING SIMILAR came from this site (pic) below, but I did not enter that site as it said it was "Suspicious" so I could not get there to see WHAT INFO IT SAID ON THAT ONE like mineKIJIJI-OILER ENGLAND-71.jpg

Nice pics Rose. What we were hoping to see was a tube connected in the center of your spout where the hole is that would extend down into the oil reservoir. With a tube down in the oil the pump would at least have a chance of picking it up and pulling it up to and through the pump. Didn't find a loose tube rattling around in the can did you? Without a pick-up tube the oiler operation is likely the plunger just working a valve allowing oil to flow when tipped.

I think I understand what your mean...I contact a place over the pond here ( I am in Canada here), to see if they had any ideas. Now that I found that pic of another one kinda similar to it -- trying to find out whatever I can. Thank you

.....ALSO now that I am typing in Railroad oiler oil can in google, I found another kinda the same with the pump -- but NOT an Abbey one - so I am guessing mine now is also railroad one too, with a side pump. See mine at top of post

I believe this is a Locomotive oiler can as I have found some other pics similar to this under the name of CANON from around 1919...... they too have a side pump like mine, so researching in that direction now

Sounds like you are closing in on the purpose and the lubrication application it was designed for Rose. I suppose with a tilt of the can and pump with the thumb it would work.
