I am about to order my door and I guess it's just me or are garage doors way overpriced? I do have an oddball size, 14X8, but come on. Where are you guys buying your doors? This one is an AMARR LP30 for 700.00 installed. No insulation or opener. What do you think am I getting screwed?

Thats cheap. We were looking at doors that where 5000 each and we need 3. We finally settled on some that were 4500 for the full set ( no install ) . Not as nice looking but screw spending 15000 on garage doors. Some all wood doors are way more that 5k each. We needed urethane insulated doors though because of teh winters here.

I just got done getting quotes for a 16x7 door. The most expensive was going through Costco at $4400 for an Amarr R17 insulated door. The cheapest I found was $2400 for a Cloplay R17 insulated door and LM3800 opener from home depot.

I can't remember what my 18x8 door cost but I believe $1500ish. R19 insulation.

I bought an 8x7 Wayne Dalton at Lowe's for $425, R13 I believe. The non-insulated doors are special order and not worth it for the little bit of savings because they don't hold up to the wind nearly as well.

I'm building a house, just got some quotes:
3 10' X 8' 1 3/8 thick R 12.6 insulation steel $971 apiece. Overheead door Co. Are they national?

Went to the Home Depot web site. Same size doors, Clopay brand. $1,208 apiece.

The Overhead Door Co, quoted me $475 for each Liftmaster 3800 opener. Because of this forum I know that I can get them cheaper!

Buy it before they change their mind. That door installed for $700 is a good deal. You're definitely not getting screwed.

3 CHI doors similar to 5216 style are being installed on my house on Wednesday. Two are 18x7'9" and one is 8x7'9". All have dual pane glass arched windows and are 3 layer steel backed (insulated). Three liftmaster 3800s are being installed as well. Total price is about $5,700. Location is central California.

Friend of mine just got an Amarr Heritage 3000, about $1300 installed with a Liftmaster for about $1300, that was only a few months ago.

Installed or carry out??
If that's carry out grab the salesman by the sack and ask him to redo his figures. My local overheaddoor salesman wholesaled the openers to me for less than I could get them anywhere online.

OverHeadDoor is at least Midwest if not nationwide and I've been very happy with them. I have gotten 5 doors from them in the last year(3 due to tornado damage), all of them are very nice quality, and their installers were super.

BTW, $700 for that door isn't too bad, but I'd never put up an uninsulated door again.

I always use Overheaddoor Company for many years...
http://www.overheaddoor.com
The people are nice and the price is worth it...
I got a price in 2009 for a standard 8 x 16 with
insulation..It was 759.00 ...from Overheaddoor...
But in 2010 when i went to pick it up...It was like 1300.00

...New Prices are a bummer..
So back to the drawing board..,Looking for prices...
Well i was on-line looking at other doors company's and i
needed the true messurments before i order one...
I messed up during framing...The door opening is 7'9" x
16...
It should be 8'...but im working on plans thats in my
head, not on paper...I plan with 9' walls that gives me a
9'ceiling...I frame the header from plates down and never
thought about that i did..but oh-well..

Back to the door...The doors that are 7' or 8' high...I dont
want a 7' door..the 8' door will work but must be a plain
door, not the stamped square door because the top square will
be higher than the opening and the weather strip will not
work...
This door was giving me a headache..All other door company's
are now calling Custom sizes...special tracks, special
this, special that with high special prices ($3200)...For a
standard looking door...
My wife told me to go back to Overheaddoor..if we are paying
that high price for the stamped square door..get a price on
that custom barn looking door we liked in the showroom...
Well i sat down with the saleman, told him want i
wanted, custom size too 7'9" high,,drew it down and a printed
look of the door...
SOLD at $1200.00 Everything, even outside weather strips for
sides and top..and i have room for the elect opener with
standard tracks..insulation too...two inside locks and three
braces..
He laugh at all the papers i had from other places about
special tracks,special this,special that..
I did have to paint it though and install it..

Sounds like a deal to me - I've got two 10x8 wood doors that need replacement. Special order - I've been quoted 800~1200 a door depending on options/insulation. I just did some wood repair and continued to live with them.

I REALLY need to replace them, but until I can find them for ~400 each it isn't happening. I've just got this fear that one of these days they're just going to come apart and collapse on my '62 F100 or my Jeep.

I am getting prices all over the place. The best price is 1100 installed for a CHI insulated 15.7 r value with Polyurethane insulation. They quoted 550 installed for the LM3800. They will install customer supplied for 120. I said I could order it online for 300 shipped and save the 130 bucks. Any thoughts on one door better than another??? Clopay and Amarr are also coming up in searches. is CHI a pretty good door? Those that have them pretty happy?

My Amarr 500 series insulated raised panel (No windows) was $833 + tax back in May. Bought it from Lowes and it was on sale.

What size door do you have?

I will tend to shy away from my opinions on specific doors (I work for a garage door manufacturer not mentioned here so I am biased) but I can give you an idea of your prices are fair.

By the way, before the end of the year, some insulated doors may qualify you for an energy tax credit of 30%.

Thanks John. The door is 16x7. Overhead is a 1 3/8 door 12.5ish r-value for 910 installed with no extra charge for high lift door tracks. CHI 2614 15.37 r value, which is a 2" door for 1000 installed. Its 75 bucks extra for the high lift tracks which will get the door up about 13-14 inches. Both have the good poly insulation, not styrofoam.

Those are pretty fair prices for those doors I would say. I would personally probably choose the CHI door, not necessarily for the extra R value, but more for the overall strength of the 2" section versus the 1 3/8" section.

No extra charge for high lift? There is a new one. $75 is very fair for that, because it not only takes labor and some extra parts to do it, but it takes more spring to make the door function. How much high lift do you need?

We just bought a 16x7 door, with an R-value of 12.9 , with track/hardware/torsion spring, for $654 +tax at Menards. Just carry-out, installing ourselves (not even close to worth the money to have someone else do it). an inch and three-eighths thick, I don't remember the steel thickness right off, I think 27ga.

I dunno if Menards is just regional to the Midwest, but I figure I'd throw in the price here. Considering the rest of the garage isn't fully insulated yet, this door's almost overkill. But a door with the metal on both sides, sandwiching the insulation, makes for MUCH better structural rigidity, therefore leading to much less wear and tear on the track and hardware.
