Most steel supply places will punch holes through stock you buy from them for a minimal charge. You could cut the ears off and buy two new pieces of stock and have them punch the correct size holes for you. At that point it would really be about getting them welded on properly, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Since you have a limited tool cache, run that bucket until it explodes. Then replace it with with a used one in better shape or pony up for a new one. Those hobby tractors and accessories typically are built with that in mind (hobby), but like other have mentioned, it's so much better than a shovel.

So far a hydraulic line broke. While the hoe was off the tractor, the arm moved due to no hydraulic pressure in one cylinder and fell tearing two others. So had to have 3 new hoses made up for $145 (over 20' of hose and 6 ends).
Then one of the arm cylinders sprung a leak and was shooting fluid out the end! So that is at a shop now for a rebuild. Hope that is not too much.
Going old and cheap is not always cheap.
