Help Identify Air Compressor

Hello,
I'm looking for some help in identifying an air compressor. My dad has a compressor he has offered to me, but it is about a 14 hour drive. He knows next to nothing about it. He is also technologically illiterate; I asked for a picture, so he took a shaky picture with his Instamatic and mailed it to me!

I scanned the picture and attached it. The only info he has provided is that it is about 24" wide and 54" tall. He thinks it is 60 gal. I hoping his health will allow him to get out there and maybe find a data plate. I'm really looking to find out if it is a multi-stage pump and potential capacity.

That looks like the same color as my 20gal Speed-Aire (mine was made by Campbell Hausfeld). Speed-Aire is the house brand of compressors for Acklands.

There should definitely be a tag on or near the pump that identifies it (e.g. 3Z170 ). That, and the tags on the tank itself and on the motor will help determine what's up.

Easiest way to determine if it's a multi-stage pump is to see where the outlets go. If they all join up, it's a single stage.

If this is the 3Z170 pump then it's good for just under 10CFM with three HP:

Thanks for all the help. My dad did confirm that it is a SpeedAire. He said he couldn't read a model number, but he'll get one of the teenagers to try. Also, he'll have them take better pictures and text them to me.

He said that the discharges each cylinder goes to the next cylinder in series, they do not merge into one combined discharge. I'll have to wait on the new pictures to confirm.

Also, several years ago he had an electrical shop check the motor and rewire it to 110V. I'll have to convert it back. I do have a 220V 30A disconnect wired up for a compressor ready to go.

I just received some pictures from my Dad. It does look like the cylinders at the 10 and 12 o'clock position do discharge to the 2 o'clock cylinder which then discharges to the tank. This would make it a two stage, correct? The only numbers he could see are "27k" on the motor, I'm not sure what that means. He said the the he could not read the number stamped into the tag on the crankcase of the pump. I attached the pictures.

Yes, if the cylinders discharge into one another then it is a two stage pump. It also looks like the 2 o'clock cylinder is smaller than the others, which also makes sense.

Looks like the Speedaire 3Z176B was made by Champion. Champion is still around but I don't see any three cylinder two stage pumps in their lineup.

Utility trailer is the way to go . . . . Road Trip and get that sucker !!!

Cover portion of mesh floor with plywood held down with carriage bolts and large washers on bottom side. Bring along an appliance dolly and just wheel the compressor up onto the trailer. Keep the compressor upright and ratchet strap the heck out of it, so it can't possibly fall over.

Drain and replace the oil once you get it wired up. Also immediately drain any water from tank and investigate if any rust problems inside tank. Good luck.

Resurrection of this 8 yo thread. I believe I have located a frankenpressor. On top is a speedaire 3z176B and Dayton motor . I have not been able to find any specs on the net about that model and the Grainger link from another thread reveals nothing other than it’s discontinued. The tank is a HSB national made in Oakmont, PA IN 1956 and it has a Quincy original decal on it and brass data plate.

Would anyone be able to tell me what the specs are on the speedair side? The whole assembly has been indoors its whole life and is in really good shape. I want to say it’s a 5 hp (I’ll confirm that) motor looks too big for a 3hp. Trying to find an O/M manual also but that has not worked yet either.

I know this is an old post, Here are the specs for the dayton speedaire 3z176b if anyone is interested now or in the future. I have had mine since 1986

If my memory serves me correctly, both Dayton and Speedair (sp?) are house brands of WW Grainger. If I recall correctly they call themselves Grainger. They were very pleasant and friendly people when I used to buy things for a former employer.
Give them a call.

As far as the Original Poster, I can’t think of a better reason to visit your Father than to collect the compressor.
You only get one Father and I miss mine, I regret not having taken every opportunity to visit him.
