All,

Just looking for some advice on how best to clean and attack these Napa Echlin cabinets, i scored locally. I am shooting for that rat rod clear coat, save the patina approach before i hang them. They are pretty crusty here is my plan of attack let me know if there is something i am missing or if there is a better way.
  1. Pressure Wash
  2. Dry
  3. Scrub with Bar Keepers friend; along with course brillo pads on a DA
  4. Dry
  5. Scrub again with spray bottle CLR and fine brillo pad on DA
  6. Dry
  7. Wipe down inside and out with Acetone
  8. Dry
  9. Wipe on penetrol for clear coat type finish
  10. Dry
  11. Hang them up
Any other considerations or things to avoid, i want to remove or reduce rust while keeping the paint, do you think the bar keepers or clr will damage the existing paint? Anyone done a similar process with good results? I was going to spend the money on Papi's Patina product, but a few boards say that penetrol will give the same look and same protection. LMK your thoughts if you have done something similar with good results.

If you don't want to risk wrecking what's there, I'd skip everything I've crossed out above. Personally, I'd hand wash with soap and water, then rub with BLO. That's it. That's my go-to for preserving delicate patina.

I used CLR and 0000 steel wool where the rust areas were and sponge where there was paint on a cabinet I did. After that I hand rubbed it with 3M Finesse-it then a coat of wax. So far the rust hasn't reformed and the paint still looks good for being done thirteen years ago.

Just circling back on this topic as i got something done on project recently. So to begin with i found the most effective way to attack these crusty cabinet inside and out was to pressure wash, then use hook and loop Brillo pads on my trusty HF 5in random orbital sander and CLR. I had the CLR in the spray bottle and would apply the CLR to each let set for 10 minutes then use the Brillo pad to scrub down the heavy scaly rust. Once i made progress on each, i washed them again with soapy water and a brush, once dry wiped everything down with mineral spirits.

Application was straight forward i did not diluent the penetrol, just straight application with a paint applicator sponge. A little does go a long way and i am pretty happy with the results, again these are cabinets and i was fine with the dent, dings, remaining rust and missing paint. I would suggest if using this method or any other honestly, the temps be warmer than 50 and 70 degrees. It is still tacky in some spots 2 days later, and hopefully will harden. I did not apply heavily and the Penetrol seemed to cover fairly easily, but the drying time in lower temps has played a huge role. Wish i could dry faster i would have it with a 2nd coat. I still may at this point.
