Hey everybody. I’m currently working on putting new spindle bearings in an atlas Clausing tool post grinder. I was able to get the old bearings out and I found that they were labeled as Norma 9012 DD. I found that Clausing calls this part 044-004 in the old manual, and supposedly this was replaced by part 044-058. I need to find a replacement for this bearing.

I was able to precisely measure the bearings with micrometers. Here are my findings.

32mm (1.260in) outside diameter
12mm (.472in) inside diameter
12.7mm (.500in) width

Based on my research this seems to be an odd size. I found online were somebody referenced part 044-004 as 10mm wide, not 12.7mm. I’m almost curious if someone put the wrong bearing in the spindle at some point in time. I assume this grinder is over 60 years old so anything could’ve happened.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

if you have a motion industries (formerly berry bearing) near you (they are a nationwide chain), they most likely would have what you need in stock, and at a reasonable price.
i have bought various small sealed bearings from them
wider bearing than oem? maybe someone didnt use the shaft washers originally installed?
how else would it fit?

That would have had precision high speed bearings in it from the factory. Spindle bearing are not your run of the mill stuff. So when finding a bearing your probably going to want a n abec 7 or 9 bearing and rated for the loads and speeds that spindle turns. I'm guessing on high speed that spindle turns 4x the motor speed. I know just enough about spindles to know I'm way ignorant of to much to make recommendations to you.

I did not try motion. I first looked on McMaster, but they did not have what I needed.

Looks like motion has a much wider selection, including what I need. (If this is the right bearing.)

There are spacers included in the drawing, but I did not find any during disassembly.

Just FYI modern bearing in 12mm ID, 32mm OD are either 10mm or 14mm wide.

Thanks for the replies. They have been helpful. What I’m really getting at, is to verify the parts numbers and match them to the bearings that were installed. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Just got off the phone with Clausing. Bearing 044-004 is supposed to be a bearing that is the following.

32mm OD
12mm ID
10mm width.

This comes out to a 6201 ZZ bearing.

This is not the bearing that was installed in my spindle, and the shims had been removed. I assume this is why they failed so quickly.

Thanks for the help.
