Hey guys,
I'm considering this box/combo here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Snap-On-large-TOOLBOX-TOOL-BOX-KRL1023-7972-1012-PCM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c72Q3a1171Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem4146a8af02QQitemZ280358334210QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools#ht_500wt_1375

It seems like a decent deal, but more importantly its like a 3hr drive for me. I'm thinking about the best way to bring it home. Leave it all connected?(Riser and locker still connected) Separate the riser and locker to lower the overall height? And what should i pick it up with? A Uhaul with a liftgate? Trailer? I'm a little intimidated due to the size of this thing and don't want to be struggling to get it loaded up, only to drop and damage it:shocking: It would be easier to buy new from Snappy, but at this price the savings would be substantial:thumbup: Plus I don't have $15,000 to buy new. Let me hear what you think. Thanks GJ!

At $8200...not what I would consider a great deal......Search craigslist carefully and you'll find better deals than that. If that box was at $5-6000k i'd say you would be doing average based on the current country-wide market...

Gabriel- I agree still a big chunck of $$ and i am not committed to it. But more importantly do you or anyone else have any suggestions for picking up and transporting a setup of this size a distance of like 100 miles? For the sake of the discussion, what would be the best way to load/unload this without a forklift? And what type of vehicle to transport with? I'm thinking either trailer with ramp/or box truck with hydraulic liftgate? Thanks in advance.

that is half price for what is described as a fairly good condition box. how cheap are you guys thinking you are going to get ****, jesus..

to the original poster, you can easily roll that onto a liftgate IF you can get enough surface area on the lift to cover between the wheels.. my snap on dealer did not want to move my box on his truck with the locker attached (I have the same exact combo as your ebay ad, but in black) as it hangs 2 ft off the end of his liftgate. we were able to carefully get it though and it wasnt a big deal.

I definitely would not try rolling it up a large ramp or anything. roll gate would be find. or a tow truck would work.

You can rent a small trailer from uhaul and roll it right on. That is what I did to pick up my KRL7022 which was about 70 miles away. It was easy. Get the low trailer with the fold down ramp.

I appreciate the responses guys:beer:

kwhitelaw - I know my Snappy guys truck has what appears to be an oversized lift gate( looks like it would be 3-4ft deep when folded down) - is your guys truck the same setup? If I were to rent a boxtruck with liftgate, assuming it would be wide enough(probably remove the side locker) my only concern is the depth of the liftgate, what do I (could I even make it work?) if the liftgate is less than the 30"(approx. depth) of the box?

I think $8200 is too much for that box,I would put it around 4.5-5K
Don't pay 82 for this unless you got money to throw away,be patient
you'll find the exact same box for 3k less within a few weeks.
Search ebay and craigslist and not just locally,You'll be glad you waited, trust me.

yes, my guys liftgate was JUST enough to roll it on,wheel to wheel. we just hung the locker off the back end and put standing pressure up against it until it was high enough to roll in the truck.

Remember we're in a recession,National unemployment rates are rising every month. Now had this still been 1994-95 i could understand
paying $8200 for it,But with the number of mechanics out of work
and looking to raise some needed cash you'll find one for alot cheaper.

as far as I am thinking it should not be that hard to move.

go rent a trailer and tow with a pickup
slide the top off into the back of the truck
roll the box into a low rental small trailer and strap it all down very well

also. go get some cheap moving blankets and some packing tape or shrink wrap. wrap the thing up so if it shifts (should not **** if you strap it correctly) it has some padding to protect it.

price...well I think thats alot. on the other hand if you like it and have the money and that is what you would have wanted anyway......

Just got laid off, for the third time in a row. There were jobs on the horizon, but they've since vanished. Or maybe they were mirages? Back outof work. Making some money from people wanting stuff done cheap. But nothing solid or steady. Same old story i guess.

DAMN!! i already hate to be unemployed! my Unemployment said no pay for one week as i did filed a claim every week but they said i filed one week late! screw them!! But what i do is i dont buy anything but food, gas, need stuff to keep moving on... i told my snap on guy i had to stop buy and wait until i find a job then start buy...

Wow, I really appreciate all the feedback! I am NOT commited to this box, but it is the setup I'm looking for. I don't need this big of a box, but as I continue to aquire skills and the tools to match - I prefer to have space to grow into rather than to have to worry about buying another bigger box in the future. Once my tool storage is taken care of, I'll be that much more oragnized, tools that much more secure, and can focus on getting the job done, as opposed to "where the f*&k is that ******** tool!?"
I currently have a little craftsman 26" 5 drawer top box that is completley overflowing, plus many, many more tools scattered all over the truck/shop. A KRL7022 size would be great for now, but in like 1 1/2 years I think it would be full and i would need bigger, thats why I'm looking at this size. Can anybody offer any advice on SO trade in values. like if i bought a KRL 7022 new now - expected to trade up to KRL1023 in 1 1/2 - 2 years, any idea what to expect on a trade/upgrade percentage wise?

Anyway, when i was laid off, my family and i went to my former work place, my dad and i use a rent trailer that have hydraulic system as drop trailer to floor so i can push almost empty KRL1003 and KRL1203 as i did put four bolts to make it together But i am still use a straps to hold it together and hold it on trailer. then i put it hydraulic and lift trailer up to lock position. it work good..

But Flat bed Tow truck are better to do tow box but i did see many tow companies try to avoid it because some of employee screw it up and end up they buy a new toolboxes for techs if they dropped it out...

Most common problem is drivers using the winch to pull the box onto the bed by the handle. The handle comes off under the stress and the box goes shooting down the road. I've loaded boxes onto tilting flatbeds, but we used load slings around the boxes.

My $0.02

I think 5-6 K is a fair price for that setup. If I was in the market for it, I wouldn't pay more than 6K at the most. I doubt you'd find it for much less than 5K. $8200 is a lot, notice there's no other bids.

If I was moving it, I'd probably go box truck with hydraulic lift.

And if I was going to bid on it, I'd want the serial numbers so I could call Snap On and verify it was fully paid for. :shocking:

I just moved a big box last night. 3 of us lifted the top into the back of my truck. Then we flipped the bottom box up into the bed (barely) and laid it down flat. I spent about 5 hours with the engine hoist at home getting it out, upright and reassembled. Not something I would want to do again soon, but definitely doable. For reference here is a pic of the box I bought in its new home. It is MAC 52" wide, 24" deep and 57" high.

I agree with the others no one will bid on that for $8200 email the seller and offer him 6k the only way the seller wont do it for less then there starting bid is if they dont need the money.
Id be patient if you have that type of cash money to lay down on a box you an do better than that. heck try and contact some local Snap-On dealers see what they can do for it you never know they may have overstock etc.

offer him cash and he will knock out a few hundred off that. Or just show up to "look" at the box and show him 100 dollar bills and he will accept a offer then

Hey guys,
I'm considering this box/combo here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Snap-On-large-TOOLBOX-TOOL-BOX-KRL1023-7972-1012-PCM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c72Q3a1171Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem4146a8af02QQitemZ280358334210QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools#ht_500wt_1375

I do agree with others that $8,200 is a bit high for this box. If it does not sell in the next 1hr, why not send the guy a message and offer $6,000 CASH RIGHT AWAY. Stress the cash in hand right away part.

As far as pick up is concerned, you can put this in a uHaul 5X9 ramp trailer. I have moved similar boxes in these trailers. They have a few different utility trailers, but they only have one type that will work for this:

http://www.uhaul.com/guide/index.aspx?equipment=opentrailer-5x9

Do not even think of renting one of their trucks with a ramp...the weight of this toolbox will fold that aluminum ramp in half. You will need quite a few ratchet straps, including some very HD ones, some padded moving blankets, and unless you have at least 4 individuals to push this on the trailer, a come-along will be essential. I would also bring a floor jack and a heavy tow strap.

When you load a heavy box on a trailer, it makes it much easier if you jack up the tongue of the trailer (while still attached to your tow vehicle) with your floor jack. With the front lifted about 15" on these trailers, it eliminates the transition at the top of the ramp, and makes it much easier to roll a box up. To do this, the box will have to be all strapped up, with a HD strap all around, so you can attach the come-along to the straps and the front of the trailer. These trailers have nothing to pull on in the front center, so that's where the tow strap comes in...to create a central pulling point.

Another tip, is that the best way to secure a box like this in the trailer is to use your ratchet straps to pull it against the front wall of the trailer. These trailers don't have a lot of tie down points, just loops on the floor in all four corners. I use a large dense foam pad in between the box and the trailer to protect the front of the box. I would move this box all together. Just strap it all up, (after wrapping in padded blankets) so it stays together.

One final thing...make sure there's no lein on the toolbox. If this is not something that you are familiar with...use the search function here; it's been discussed many times.

That is how I moved mine, Locked the drawers, then we wrapped a ratchet strap around the top and bottom boxes, and another hooked onto the winch to pull it up onto the trailer, nailed a doubled 2X4 to keep it in place, and took off:

Rent a u-haul that has the E-Track to strap it down. The biggest hurdle will be the amount of weight that the liftgate will lift. Provided the box is empty, I'd guess the weight at 1500lbs. As an example the lift gate on my truck is rated at 1600lbs. That's why I don't move loaded boxes. I've tried & it wouldn't lift one.

An update to this little saga. The ebay auction ended with no bids, and I had contacted the seller prior to auctions end saying I don't have $8,200, but I have cash if he's willing to negotiate. He asked what offer I had in mind, as he has someone else interested in the riser and locker only, and asked if I want the box by itself. I haven't yet replied. My Snappy guy said to get his first/name along with the serial #s to all pieces and he would verify if there is a lien or not. But then......Mr. Snapon began saying how now is a great time to buy new as Snapon is not doing great in this economy and has some good deals on boxes at the moment:drool: "OK, tell me more..." he had the same blue KRL 1023 with SS top new on the truck. He said well, if you're gonna offer that guy 6-6500 for his setup, I could do you this here box(including the SS top) for $7400/6 mos. 0% interest plus a gift tool card worth 10%($740) to spend on the truck. He caught my attention with that bit. What do you guys think about that. Think Mr. Snappy would go lower, or be able to give me more of a spending spree? That kinda throws a wrench in the gears(and has me considering a new? KRL 1022 or 7022).

Going back to the ebay deal, what would you guys offer, knowing that the seller is considering parting out the locker and riser(depending on my offer for the whole package). I will be looking at 5 1/2 -6 hrs. driving time round trip to haul it home.

Offer him 6 k for the whole thing and go get it. If you want decent deals. There is going to be traveling time involved.

I once bought a very low milage car(16k) just for the motor that was wacked in the back on ebay for peanuts. Hooked the trailer at 3 Am. Drove to Tehachapi and back in the same day. It was some where around 400 miles give or take. But it was worth it.

Even after the Snappy offer, I would still be looking for a better deal. These are hard times we are living in and there are some very motivated sellers out there. You just need to stay on the lookout for one, be patient, have the money ready and buy when you find a GOOD deal. Don't get the "I gotta have it now" buying spree sickness.
