Help with a NexGen EQC Auto-Dark Lens

This lens was among a lot of tools I purchased. I have very little welding experience so this thing is out of my league. In hopes of reselling the lens I bought some new batteries for it. The lens instantly came on and responded to function changes but after a few minutes there were spots (ink?) moving slowly around in the lens. After a long while the spots would spread out and the lens would return to one color. Sometimes the spots are there when I turn it on and other times it happens shortly after I start fiddling with the controls. Is the lens defective?, Am I using it wrong?, Something else? Any help would be appreciated. - D.

Mine does the same thing. I see it more when it is cold out. As soon as I use it the spots go away.

So, the spots clear up once you start welding or does it take some time?

Q: I see floating dark spots in my EQC filter when the unit is turned off. Is this a defect in the unit?

A: No. What you are seeing is called modeling. It is simply the liquid crystal in the filter separating as it de-energizes in the off state. The dark spots will disappear immediately when you turn the unit back on.

See, what confuses me is that I see the "modeling" when the unit is on. It does go away but not quickly but if you fellas say this is normal I'll take your word for it. I just don't want to sell a defective unit to someone. Thank you!

My Snap on (Jackson) auto darkening helmet would do the same, turning the darkness setting to a slightly higher number seemed to help a lot.

I'm curious, does this modeling ever occur while you are welding? If so I would think that would be most distracting if not dangerous.

In the small amount of welding that I have done, NO.

I use one every day, In fact I have 2. The spotting happens after it auto shuts down and goes away when you turn it on. Both of mine do it. It never happens when your welding.

Now before I part with this I just want to make sure that this is modeling and it is normal. And I have also noted a rectangular pattern that sometimes shows up on the screen (not shown). Is this also normal? Sorry for the fuss but this thing confuses me. Thank you. - D.

When mine does it it looks more like blobs/bubbles in a lava lamp. What does it do when you look at the sun? Does it darken?

Sometimes it looks that way but mostly it looks like I posted above. It did not adjust outside in the brighter light (no offense but it's not a good idea to look at the sun) and I could still see the liquid. Oh, well...not the find I was hoping for.

no, that is not normal. The lens should only do that when its off. I can see in the pictures that it is on and it should be one color. Even when mine shut down and the dots start the are a lot bigger than that. Does it darken as it should when you strike an ark?
