last week in my mig welding class i started vertical up fillet welds. we've been using 1/8 and 1/4 inch carbon steel. we're running between 20 and 25 volts and around 300fpm wire speed. my problem is the weld has exsessive convexity. otherwords is not flat rather it's built up and pointy. someone suggested i turn the gas flow up. they said the extra flow would help flatten the weld. they also suggested i turn the wire speed down. i haven't had a chance to try that yet. i posted some pictures i don't know how easy it is to see.

also how do you reduce spatter?

I've seen that before; it happens if you don't move the gun at a constant speed.

But there are other causes too. We do need better pictures.

Well, maybe go faster. You may need to increase side to side speed and not vertical travel speed.

turn the wire speed down a little, move side to side a little more, dont stop, keep going and be fluid.i know easier said than done, but it takes time and you have to keep making adjustments, the more you learn about how not to do it,the easier it gets to understand how to do it.

Side to side slow, and check your gas flow. Could also be wire speed like the other guys said. I used to get that alot when welding 1/4 inch steel. Found out I was out of gas or I was trying to hurry.

Good luck.

looks cold to me. what kind of angle are you holding the gun at, you should have it pointed up. check out www.weldingtipsandtricks.com for uphill mig welding tips.

That guy has the right idea on what welder to get!

What gas are you running? I have seen straight Co2 splatter like that.

Man that is a good site. The best I've ever seen. I watched the clip on cheap auto darkenning helmets. I have a cheapo from one of those travelling tool sales and I have to say, the best investment ever. I could not imagine welding without it.

I would run about 18.4/265 and go faster with the torch facing up to dig. You are going to have a lot of splatter going up because you are digging into the metal. If splatter is that big of a deal, hold the torch at more of a 90* angle and make sure the metal is as clean as possible. If you are running 20-21v I would be running 350-375 wire speed, so if you want to stay that high in the voltage you would need more wire speed to keep the penitration, keeping the weld flatter along the way.

The only downside is with the higher voltage and wire speed than what you already have, you will be moving faster and getting more splatter. This is why I say go to 18.4/265 and take your time, splatter free.
