Help with Reznor gas heater

My wife and I recently moved into a new (to us) house and I got a great shop space with a detached 2 car garage. As it's getting colder, I'm motivated to figure out the heater that's in there. I can't seem to get it to work, with just turning on the breaker (the line is hot, I tested it), turning on the gas valve along the black iron supply pipe, and turning the thermostat up.

Here are some photos. Having trouble finding info about this heater online. Any help would be appreciated.

it looks like the gas valve & the back of that heater has been getting wet, perhaps from the flue . I would recommend getting a gas guy to inspect it before you run it.
Oh, and it's a standing pilot ignition, you need to light the pilot to get it to work...
but, again, I would have someone3 look at it first

Does the blower motor kick on like its trying to light. It should kick on and you should hear click, click, click, which is the ignitor. Unit does look pretty rough.

doubtful it was a professional install ... to many things that don't look right. no drip leg on gas line, black tape instead of marrettes, flue to close to flammable surfaces ,

It's old, standing pilot and I think I see a couple disconnected wires hanging down. It's old enough that the serial number lookup on the reznor website won't work, I would call reznor and see if they can get you a wiring diagram.

If all the wires are hooked up then try lighting the pilot and firing it up.

Don't put any money in that unit they were junk from the day they were new... Buy a new modine hot dog you'll be much better off than waisting a dime on that one.

And yes I could make it work as could most any good HVAC guy but your going to pay me half of what a new one costs to do it...

Those old Reznors were pretty solid unit heaters back in the day.
That one is a natural draft unit that has a power ventor motor added to the flue gas outlet.
Now that looks like it is a factory option but it looks like it has been thoroughly screwed with.
If the heat exchanger is solid you may have something to work with but you might be a few hundy into it before it makes heat for you.
I would be worried about the stretch of vent piping that is under positive pressure from the ventor motor/fan too.
The moisture might be from the products of combustion cooling and condensing in the unit or vent piping.
A new low profile unit heater might be a good thing to consider.

Don't know about it being junk from day one....I've have that heater in my shop for over 10 years and got it from my buddy who had it for.....years......
good solid unit.....zero problems, does what its suppose too, lights, heats, blower comes on ect.....as for yours, does look like it needs some TLC....ok,more then a little, but if you're a DIY guy ,I have the service manual and wiring diagram, let me know.
I'm sure that all the new heaters are better then the old ones, but I'm a COB and if I can make it work and make sure its SAFE,and do it cheap,I'd give it a hard look, then go for there, good luck,

So the genius who installed it obviously wasn't too particular. Among other things, you can't see that the flue pipe exits from the siding on the garage through a pretty sizable hole with no flashing whatsoever. That's where the water is coming from, so I'm not so worried about the furnace itself generating a bunch of moisture.

I appreciate the offer greenbikemike, I'll send you a PM, unless you want to post those documents here.

Looking at some info from Reznor that I was able to find online, it looks like my unit was manufactured in July 1981 and was supposedly replaced with model F. Also it looks like parts are available, or at least they were in 2001 when this leaflet was printed.

Unless your quite knowledgable with gas systems as I guess your not. Have a pro look at it. Don't mess with it. Not worth blowing up your new place. He'll let you know if it's worth getting it working. My guess is he'll tell you to toss it.

I'd like to think I'm quite handy and have common sense, as well as an inclination to do my homework. I have great respect for electricity and gas, but that doesn't mean I won't do the work myself. I've replaced a gas water heater and plumbed new lines for a gas dryer and stove (where there were previously electric appliances). As long as I have reference materials, I'm confident in my abilities.

Rayjay, thanks for the link and suggestion. I'll check them out if I need to. Still haven't fixed it in part because I still haven't found the wiring diagrams.

you may not find a wire diagram for that heater, if the power vent was added, after the fact there will be a sensor that will not let the heater fire off till the power vent is running, is the thermostat hooked up and working? i see too many wires not hooked up like the red and yellow by the fan

jeff

if you can call that company they may be able to get you a set of wire diagrams if the power vent was a add on to that model

found this on the web

Thermostat is disconnected right now because I pulled down the peg board and am running new electrical. I can hook it up though for troubleshooting. There are definitely wires not hooked up or connected incorrectly. I was hoping to go through each of them once I had a wiring diagram to make sure they're right. I did send a message to Reznor today, but their website says they'll only provide manuals to licensed HVAC servicers. Will wait and see what they say.
