hello garage journal!
first off wanted to say im a new member and think this site is awesome!! ive been creeping around and seeing alot of informative stuff here in regards to my dilema.sorry if this is a repeated thread! here it is.
i've got engineered trusses in my 36x36x14 pole barn. they are 9'oc sitting on laminated posts. i intend on spray foam insulation for the entire interior( want it nice and toasty in there with my heated floor. gets pretty bitter out here in nwi indiana). i want to drywall the ceiling but obviously need to add joists to attach trusses laterally. i dont want to over weight the trusses by adding joist (2x4 or 2x6) and then attching 1/2 drywall. the bottom chords are 2x6.
has anyone done this before? is it safe? pictures comments and advice would be greatly appreciated!!

We've framed them out quit often that way, we just use 2x6 since 2x4 for that 9' span is not strong enough and will promote sag overtime. If your spray foaming and worried about the load, frame 3'oc with the 2x6's between the trusses and then install a steel ceiling. Light weight and the spray foam will give the attic a conditioned air transfer free zone.

You could also install some strong backs on top of the truss bottom cord and lag them in to help spread the load throughout multiple trusses if you want to sheetrock it and blow in insulation...just another thought

I did'nt snap may pics of this job, but you get the jist of it.

We overlap joints 1" which is more than enough to compensate for material growth or shrinkage.

The insulation contractor we used put some sort of coated cardboard along the eaves to allow air flow and blew loose fiberglass in throughout. Walls got the netting and were also blown with fiberglass. Before we finished this 18'x36' bay it was uninsulated and he used 2-20' radiant tubes to keep the heat at 70 degrees in the winter to service his dump trucks and equipment. Once everything was done, the sole heat source is leaving the man door open to the attached normal garage, its that tight.

I used blown in insulation just like your average house. This was my first lift install it was pretty easy. I read some horror stories about careless installers and figured if my life hangs in the balance I better do it myself. The instructions were ok but were misleading at times. Thanks for the kind words.
