I am in the US Army and live on post, so I am somewhat limited to what I can do.

I painted the garage white (it was just unfinished sheet-rock) while my neighbors thought I was crazy. The 420 sq/ft of ceiling kinda sucked though. I also installed fluorescent lights where there were bulbs.

With some searching on this site, I made plans and build the workbench.

Any comments or recommendations are very welcome .

Nice job on the workbench and great car!

The garage is coming along nicely. I'm in the service too, you just have to make your modifications such that you can take it with you when you leave.

Some of the new modular hanging systems are good that way. When it's time to PCS, just lift off your cabinets and hangars and remove the slatwall sections and fill the holes. Use plug in shoplights etc. You can also get something like Racedeck for flooring and just pick it up and take it to the next place when you go.

Good luck!

Great car. A good friend is finishing a "freshening" of his 1 owner (him) Tiger. Nice work on the shop as well.

Great ideas....I hope to only have one more PCS though. Went over 18 years last July.

The Tiger is a bit light up front right now due to having the heads worked. It normally does not have that much clearance over the front tires. You can see all of the Ford 260 parts by the woodworking bench. I do love the car, it is my second. I had one in 1995.

You live ON FT Leaventorth & have a garage? When I lived there, all I had was the Auto Craft Shop or the alley behind my quarters!

Man that was a long time ago for you. The Auto Craft Shop has been closed for many years. They are in the process of opening another; due mainly to my harassment of MWR and talks with the CG.

I am permanent party and waited 10 months for this house. You would not believe the quarters here now. All of the new houses have a huge garage that can easily house three cars.

For many reasons we wanted the house we are in.

Yep, I was there from '88 to '93 with a short TDY (a year) to the Gulf.

I "cut my mechanics teeth" hanging out in the post autocraft shops during my Army days in early 80s. They were usually run by a retired Motor Sgt who kept everything organized.

Duke, I saw the URD sticker on your cart in the corner. What do you have and what did Gadget hook you up with?

Thats the downside to being in the service...we cant get to crazy with our setups...you just have to do it all over again every few years!

URD helped me out with parts for the Aquamist system I had on this -

I got tired of fixing things so I sold the car and used the moola to pay for part of the Tiger.

gotta love the beer signs, wanna get rid of them?

No, sorry. I had many more but sold them. These were my favorite. Search ebay.

I got out 20 years ago, but seeing quarters with a 2 car garage makes me ask, are you an officer?

Yep, a Major. That does not mean much hear though. There are literally hundreds of 04s students here for CGSC that live in houses with no garage or carport. Permanent party soldiers get the good stuff. I still had to wait 10 months to get this place when I knew I would be staying permanent party.

Want some pictures of the Tiger ?

Here is some background on the recent work on Ford 260 in the car -

I have had a chronic problem with cylinders #5 and #3 not firing properly. Have exhaustively checked the ignition system and determined that it is something mechanical.

The strip down.

Intake manifold off, was quite a challenge to get the rear bolt off. I discovered that the PO used a stud on the back driver side so I had to use vise grips to carefully unscrew it and then the manifold was able to be removed.

First head off. The rear pushrod cannot be removed without moving the head. I will need to remember to have that pushrod in place when I install the head. The rear head bolts where a PITA too.

Cylinders are in very good shape. It seems that the PO was telling me the truth that the engine had been rebuilt. I also verified that the heads are 1964 260 (C4OE A code). These were the last 260 heads made by Ford and have 289 valves. They are the best breathing OEM 260 heads made. PO also has screw in rocker studs installed.

I also pulled the oil pan and removed the oil pump. It was producing way too much pressure (75-100 psi, cold) so I will have it checked and replace it if necessary.

Heads will go to Paul Burke to be checked. I will then paint everything the correct Ford blue which will make a great improvement to the engine compartment appearance. Will also be powder coating many components and having the exhaust manifolds ceramic coated inside and out.

Head examination results -

Complete trash valve job, the kind you get an auto parts store for $75. All valves will need to be replaced and hardened exhaust valve seats installed. Looking at the valve seats, I am amazed that the engine ran at all. It is very much like another head I had serviced recently.
All is good though. It is a SBF and the parts are dirt cheap. Actually, will be using some Chevy intake valves ;>)

Leaky valves were the culprit.

Note how sunk the valve seats are, larger intake will correct most of the intake side. New hardened exhaust seats with new valves the exhaust.

You can see the uneven contact area of the seat here -

The ugliest of all, check out the chatter marks on the valves as the cutting stone was allowed to skip on the valve surface. Paul does not use stones.

Just wait till you see what Paul does to these heads.

Getting closer. Picked up the ceramic and powder coated parts. The Ford blue is rattle-can engine paint.

Check out the new valve covers -

The engine decal was hand stamped by Larry Atkisson

(25 Jan) Got the heads back from Paul yesterday. Got BUSY today with painting and install.

First the heads. The heads did not have any hardened exhaust valve seats. The intake seats were also sunk in badly due to several bad valve jobs.

To save the heads Paul installed hardened exhaust valve seats and larger Chevy valves. Intake - 1.72", exhaust 1.50". This brought the exhaust back up to the proper height and the intakes are now within .020 of the original height. With some investigation, it was determined that this engine suffered a head gasket failure and cylinder #7 had had water in it for some time. This was most likely the reason for the engine rebuild.

Here is the before and after of a combustion chamber. Note the multi angle valve seat work. This was accomplished by machining, NOT stones. The valves have the same multi angle machined surface.

Here are some pictures of the heads painted up and Paul’s handy work -

The RA for the head surface is between 60-70. That is all that is needed with an iron heads on a iron block.

The engine is coming back together. Looking much better than what I started with -

And now -

The top is a 6' laminate kitchen countertop from Home depot for ~$50. The cabinets are UltiMATE from Sears. I got all three off of Craigslist locally for $250. Don't even install the feet, they will immediately break off. I mounted two lengths of 4" X 4".

Nice shop and ride... first time I saw a Tiger I was sitting on the back deck at my apartment... Here this loping up the road, guy rounded the corner in a lil Kelly Green car... I thought WTF... he stopped and lit em up and roasted the skins all the way down the road... I was at the end where he had to stop, I stood up an yelled down to ask what the hell it was and he told me a Sunbeam Tiger... DAMN!!!

I love your Tiger. Cool that you are keeping it stock. I am not sure I could resist not putting aluminum heads on it and roller rockers,and....

Here is my motor. A bit larger... All aluminum 482 in my Shelby Cobra.

Very nice car and a HUGE engine. So how much of that HP can you actually get to the ground?

I stayed relatively stock with the 260 due to the limited tuning capability of the 260 and the fact that is the numbers matching engine. In the future, it will live on an engine stand in the garage and be replaced with a 347 stroker with all of the go fast stuff. I think around 350 RWHP should work just fine for the 2500lb Tiger.

Minus the carb, engine complete.

Nice shop & nice car!

THANKS!

Dynoed at 605 HP at the crank. I am running a toploader with 331 gears. The Cobra is 2300 pounds and rarely do I ever need to floor it, its the fastest car I have ever been in. I have a new project that will have a 331 stroked small block. Was going to build a 347 until I spoke with several people who recommend against it. A 331 would be a great motor for your Tiger.

2300 lbs.....200 less then my Tiger, now that must be a wild ride.
I have 3.07 gears and a close ratio toploader HEH-E.
331 will work for my car and the measly ~400 HP I want from the engine. What is this new project of yours? Check your PM also, I sent you some info on a show.

Dude, I hope you still have the Tiger and have decided to just lose some weight. I wanted a blue Tiger but found this one in really good shape and could not pass on it. Nice examples are getting hard to find.

The tiger has long been a favourite of mine as well. Who doesn't like a lot of energy in a tight little package!!!
Thanks for the great photos of the rebuild. That's a hell of a tight spot to work in (engine bay!). Would pulling it not have been easier - probably not. What brand did you use for paint? Looks shiny - is there a clear coat?

EDIT - I re-read and see it's either powder coat or ratle can - the blocks looks too shiny fo rattle can - maybe the lighting/flash...

Looking forward to the finished pics of both the car and the shop!

Congratulations! Cool looking trophy for a sweet car! I'm also impressed with how nice and clean your garage is. Most people don't have ones that look that nice in places they own.

Really nice!

Little question for you.. I have the same small parts bins that you have (the blue ones hanging from the wall). Have't installed them yet. How do you like them? Are you happy with the height you've hung them at? Anything you'd change in that department?

I really like them, height is good (I am 6'2"). The fact that I can see in them is key. I don't have to pull on push in drawers to find what I want. I can also detach one easily and take it to where I am working if need be.

The only thing I would change is the color. I would like them black to match the workbench.

I'll post a new picture of the workbench tonight....it is in full use now and does not look near as naked.
