HF and SO floor jacks

HF sale paper has ad for 3 ton "professional" floor jack. They compare it to Snap On jack the same size. Hf is $180, SO $651. I'm not interested in getting either one at this time, but I'm curious: Who makes the SO jack?

It's unusual for competitors to name a rival company. The conventional wisdom for many years is that if you use your competitor's name in your ad, you are just giving them free advertising and getting their name before the public.

Everbody HF is advertising to is either:

well aware of snap on and happy to pay their prices

Well aware of snap on and could never afford their prices (most HF average customers imho)

Or have no clue snap on exists and suddenly sees more affordable value on HF products...

Really i like the comparison ads that show HF stuff isnt just junk (at least on paper)

Sorry no clue who actually makes snap ons jacks. Also no clue how any average blue colar(non wrench Turner living) family guy could ever afford a decent snap on tool set.

I didn't remember the previous thread, sorry. Interestingly enough, the two ads show the same jacks, lower price on the SO, higher price on the HF. Another example of there being very little truth in advertising.

Looks like HF just showed everyone snapons underwear. Seems to me they should have just left this lawsuit alone! If snapon thinks theres enough similarities to warrant. A lawsuit, i think i might go buy one :)

I have had a Harbor Freight 3 ton floor jack for about 15 years now and not one bit of trouble with it. But to be fair, it is for home wrenching so it doesn't get a lot of use.

afford or don't need to spend crazy amounts of money on tools?
what's the difference between owning snap on tools and a Warner jack (because it's cheaper) or a Craftsman jack or .....
an IR impact, or
Plenty of people have "mixed" tool sets.
bang for the buck, if it looks like a duck......

I just went to Snap On web site catalog and check the specs for the floor jacks.
If you look to the bottom COO (of parts) China!

I do have the SO jack shown. To be honest I am a wrench turner and use tools all day long.

I would never look at HF to buy tools I need day in a day out.

While I have had no problems with the jack, I know that my dealer can order any part for it, that I will ever need.

One of their bullet points of their new jack design was that it was self serviceable. The ram assembly was like $200 new from SO. So no rebuilding it, just replace it.

I know some will say they are easy to put seals in and replace. The jack that I was replacing was an older SO, that leaked down. When I took it to the jack/hydraulic repair shop, it was $275 to fix it. They were 2-3 weeks out on repair.

I bought the new one and fixed the old.

Not to derail the thread, but any of you use the jack Costco sells? It's $95 and I'm pretty impressed. I currently have 3 of them - just bought a second for home since my 20 yr-old jack has a seal leak and the third is at my other place. They seem to perform well and you can't beat the price.

or well aware of snap on, are able to afford it, but aren't willing to pay the idiot prices that snap-on puts on their tools.

or are stupid enough to pay for snap-on tools thinking it somehow makes up for their shortcomings.

Daydreaming again, are you..
most buy from sears /hf and others because 1) no snap on store to go look at and fondle the tools, 2) for the home shop hobby guy the need for a tool that if it breaks they have to chase down a tool truck..

I have many snap on tools.. but I will not pay 389.00 for a 4 piece sae line wrenches , and another 389.00 for the 4 piece metric set.. I can't see paying 800.00 for tubing line wrenches to work on my cars be it my daily or my hobby vehicles.. the craftsman 49.00 set will do just fine..
And I afford the 800.00 bucks, sure.. it be one thing if I needed to sell them if I'd get close to it, but I'd get maybe 100 for both sets..
same with a jack.. snap on is 650+/- craftsman 129.00 . I get it un air and then on a stand.. or at least a stand under it.. I'll bet dollars to donuts the hyd cyl are both the same imported junk.. I don't care if snap on cost 1800.00 I'm not trusting it not to have a seal fail and crush me.. I'll use a stand..
When I was working at a dealership, I bought snap on and mac. because they came to me.. not because the tools are better than say craftsman.. cause they are not.. I've got as many broken snap on sockets and ratchets , as craftsman.. difference is. I'm still carrying around the snap on, waiting to catch a tool truck to get them fixed.. where for now I can walk into sears and get the craftsman replaced..

Judge Lynn Adelman determined that while there are similarities between the Daytona jacks and models that Kenosha-based Snap-on Inc. has patents on, “the overall effect of each design on the eye of the ordinary observer is different.”

Adelman also said he didn’t find evidence presented by Snap-on to be persuasive. That evidence included affidavits from potential customers and franchisees who felt the jacks were the same based on visual similarities. “One problem with Snap-on’s evidence concerning the visual similarities between its own jacks and the Daytona is that the evidence is primarily anecdotal and consists in large part of statements made either by biased witnesses (Snap-on’s franchisees) or by unidentified Internet commenters,” Adelman wrote.

Those jacks look so similar that to me I would think that if they were not out of the same factory, then the MFG of the HF jack bought a SO jack and copied it.

The fact that SO sued them tells of the inroads that HF has made into the mainstream market as well as the professional market.

I also was surprises that the SO jack was so cheap. I'm assuming not made in the USA. If it was USA made than I would say I need to go buy one
