Looked at 8 or 10 YouTube videos on modifying a sand blasting cabinet and spent $100+ and 3/4 of a day installing a gravity feed system and increasing the air hose size to 3/8" id. Only made it worse. What did I do wrong?

Following.

I've watched same or similar and I've been toying with the idea of picking one up and modding.

You might consider some pix and description of the mods you did and the issues you're having.

I've modified a Harbor Freight blast cabinet with a home brew metering valve, aftermarket gun, and various other little improvements and have been very satisfied with the performance. I'm happy to provide some thoughts, but we do need some more detail about your setup and what you've done.

Don't watch the Youtube videos or listen to most of the internet as they are probably just repeating what they've read. What I did with mine was to dump the stock pickup tube and gun and went TP Tools website and bought one of these, https://www.tptools.com/Skat-Blast-USA-Cabinet-Gun-and-Pickup-Tube-Upgrade-Kit,2320.html?b=d*8026. I have since added a foot pedal from TP Tools as I got tired of holding the trigger. After that the next thing to look at is your compressor and air lines, small lines and low CFM will attribute to poor performance in the cabinet.

I have also hot-rodded my HF cabinet with the bottom valve, foot pedal control, etc. and am happy with the performance. I regulate mine down to 80 psi or so to conserve CFM. Using crushed glass and the Eastwood foot pedal/gun at the moment.

Turn your metering valve so it's straight up.

Make sure your media is screened. What gun are you using & what do you have the pressure set at? Nozzle size in the gun?

Also what media are you using

I would drill a 3/8-1/2” hole through the pipe ****** threads where I have marked right next to the tee as close as possible. Air will enter and turbulate3995F8F8-A706-4239-BAD1-D04A9066C4B3.jpeg the grit sitting dead in that tee, making it move forward. As it moves forward, more will drop into place to be extracted. Best grit flow is accomplished by dribbling grit into a moving air stream. The gun cannot “****” grit in compacted static form. The grit sitting dead in that Tee is not allowing air to flow through the grit to make things move. After drilling a hole, shut off your mix valve so the hole can do it’s job.

Also, looks like he's using a reducing tee. I would stick with a normal tee to maintain the volume in the mixing chamber.

I may be the only one satisfied with the stock pickup performance. Mine did come with a better gun I think.

I bought one of the less expensive blast cabinets I had to upgrade the gun. The OE was junk. After a year the new gun was worn out and plugged and there were no parts.
I did what I should have done first, I changed to Mod-u-blast and bought a 24-48 made in Canada unit.
The cost was 4 times a much. It works and I have no regrets

Drilled the 3/8"hole as per post #9 and tightened the 3/8" ID hose going into the gun and everything works great. Thanks

I had a long conversation with Mike Tacoma a few weeks ago. He was telling me about the days (decades ago now) when they used to make cabinets. Apparently they were pretty awesome, but expensive.

He said he was at a trade show somewhere with his stuff and he saw several new import cabinets sitting on a trailer. He crawled around and inspected them, then saw what they were selling them for, and he knew right then it didn't make any sense for him to be in the cabinet making business any longer.

Now, they just make upgrade kits for other cabinets, but they really are geared toward the Harbor Freight style cabinets. He feels that the hopper is deep enough, and the partially bent/welded construction is sufficient to achieve close to the efficiencies his gun and valve system are able to deliver, if not on par with the cabinets they used to build.

Ray's Garage has a video series on assembling and prepping the HF cabinet for best performance. They (Tacoma) essentially direct you to the video series for guidance. With a look even if you're not installing a Tacoma blast system.
