Am I the only one who is wondering what the hell this guy does for a living that he can afford or need a bench like this?

Not really. It's no one's place to tell him what he should buy with his money or determine whether or not he needs it.

That's an extremely nice project. The price dosen't sound out of line and could probably be cut a little by some patient scrounging. Anyway, not that the op didn't include labor costs. If someone had to be paid for that work I could see the cost doubling.

Congratulations on a good project.

I say that about alot of the garage builds on this site.

So he has a couple of grand in a REALLY NICE workbench and toolbox setup. That's less than the average mechanic pays for a decent sized SO or MAC box...

I find this amusing. Especially since it is only your second posting here at GJ. I wonder what the first one was?

If you peruse the tools section, you will find that many, many GJ members own tool boxes that cost them many times what I spent making a steel workbench that also holds my tools. I had to do that because I don't have room to spare and need to make the most of what I have.

Look at the garages in the gallery, at the beautiful "operating rooms" that some of the obviously well-off members have built. Walls full of Lista or Vidmar cabinets, multiple hoists, beautiful and desirable vehicles of all kinds displayed on the garage floor and on the hoists.

I think it is funny that you picked my workbench build, done entirely by the owner, using basic readily-available and affordable (some even salvaged) materials and no paid labor, to make your point.

Anyway, welcome to Garage Journal, newbie. Enjoy.

Why does it matter? We all come from different walks of life and of course different levels of income. If I had more I'd build better, but I'm happy with what I have and I don't worry too much about what I don't have.

Steveo, incredible-looking workbench. One question: do you get bothered by the extra room you have between the back of the toolboxes and the wall? Would there be enough space there for some raw materials (10-ft sticks of square tubing, etc)? I could imagine me putting my bar clamps back there.

I forgot to use the quote button but you will al know why I posted.

I got a bit upset with the comment by Fire&Steel.

Not really wondering that at all. But I do wonder where you get off even questioning some one else's status in life!

I admire his skill and waiting to know what he wants before tackling the job.

And as usual with his talent it is another job well done.

I built my bench the same way and have wasted space behind it. Good place for spiders to hide....

I have been storing long lengths of steel material behind mine. Rounds on one side, and flat/angle on the other side.

I struggled a bit today, trying to decide whether to mount the Columbian swivel base vise or the big Athol on this bench.
In the end, I decided that this bench deserved the Athol.

Steevo, what do you do about that extra room behind the toolbox? Do you use it to store some bar clamps or some raw materials?

That is something to be proud of right there. I dont have that kind of skill or vision but threads like this inspire me to step up my own game. Thanks for sharing this.

Steve I love the work bench / tool storage center, you do very nice work. I think the price is is very cheep for what you got. I know of a some people that have as much a 5 times that amount in their tool box and has less storage then you do with no where near much work bench. Great Job

That work bench was designed and built by a guy who knew EXACTLY what he wanted, and EXACTLY how to do it...

Fantastic bench/tool storage...

GREAT workbench and storage, proves that if you think and plan how you want your work space anything is possible. Really great job and thanks for the levelers info I will be using them on my new welding table.

WOW. That looks awesome... especially considering the cost. Now, lets see you fill all those drawers!

AWESOME workbench man! Any pictures of what's in the drawers?

Ok, I have been moving stuff in and organizing things, so here are some pics:

Obviously, that isn't all 52 drawers, some are either empty or just stuff waiting to be organized.
I also moved all my precision tools into my old Snap-On chest and box, along with lathe and mill tooling:

I wish I would have seen this before I went and bought/built my benches! Absolutely perfect set up for my limited space... I've been trying to figure out how to organize my shop for the last year, since I built it... Time to put a bunch of stuff on Craigslist and start fabing up the new bench, thanks for sharing...

Steevo, indeed, a really great setup and nice collection of tools. But, I'm stumped to identify the tool in the 7th pic from the top ... it's on the right side of the drawer and looks like really FAT dividers .... what is it??

John, that is a pin spanner, for turning packing nuts that have two holes in their faces.

That one happens to be a Proto, for up to 4" pin spacings:
