I did see that they got very good reviews and Car Craft mag. endorsed them. That 13 drawer cabinet is nice. I would 2 and leave a 3' opening between the two.

Steevo, I had to bite on this idea. You nailed it with this workbench build. I was skeptical at first, after reading the entire thread, I'm in. I went with a slight variation as I went with a cantilever mount (so I could sweep underneath). Here's Bench one of four:

View media item 36233
I went with 10 Ga galvanized with 1.5 inch particle board underneath to keep it from "ringing"

Keep up the good idea's, Steevo!!

what kind of floor to work surface heights are you guys achieving with these benches? I was thinking I wanted to target around 39" but the rolling box at HF appears to be that tall already.

Tool box
42" wide
18" deep
33 1/2" tall w/out casters
39 1/2" tall with casters

Casters add 6" of height

I was at Harbor Freight this morning and looked at their toolboxes. I was impressed! They had a nice sold feel to the drawers and when I build my garage next year I'll be like Steevo but space them about 36" apart and have an open space for a stool and work area.

I've been working on my Steevo inspired bench the past few days. The big thing in my area are the McTavish benches and while they are nice they are really expensive and with so many deep drawers they are somewhat poor managers of space. I purchased three 44" boxes on Black Friday and started cutting metal Monday. I painted it this morning and am waiting on the leveling feet to come UPS this afternoon.

When facing the bench there will be a box on the very left, then an open area for sitting at the bench on a stool, then another box. In the corner are two spaces for shelves. One is about 27" wide and the other is 44.25 inches wide (to accommodate another box in if I want in the future). On the very right side is another box. There will be about 18 feet of countertop space when I'm finished. The work top will be 29" deep plus a back splash that will be 4" tall and 7" deep. This depth will accommodate battery chargers.

Wow, love this idea! Been lurking on and off for a while, but now reading more seriously as I have bought a house with attached 6x9 garage (double wide, car and a half deep) and I want to set it up as a really nice workspace to be in. I had a metal building the same size at my previous house, and while I did a lot of work in it, it was never really a 'nice' place to be. Hot in summer, cold in winter, dusty, messy... You get the idea. I would love to have a well organised workshop space this time around, and fortunately there is no huge rush to move stuff in, so hopefully I can plan it out and lay it out well this time around which will make life much easier.

Anyway, back on topic. Love this bench. I think I'll definitely be building something along the same lines.

Made some progress on my rendition of the bench today. It really turned out to be a LOT of counter space! Now I need to measure for my steel top and get it ordered and figure out how to organize my junk!

That is looking really nice. Steevo was asked this: What to do with the "dead Space" in the corner? Plans?

(Some ways, Id be tempted to stick a vertical compressor there... :dunno: )

I remember those comments earlier in his build. I am in the midst of building my Steevo's style bench and I decided to build a corner cabinet as a way to utilize that space. It actually eats up a little more floor space than Steevo's bench corner if you try and match the same width as the benches. I am hoping the additional storage will be worth the extra few inches.

Now you've done it....you've found the only acceptable reason for a man to shop at ikea

. . . . other than chowing down on Swedish meatballs . . . .

Well.. one other thing: if you collect old school records ( I do..) the Ikea Expedite shelf units are perfect. 13 X 13 "cubes" 15" deep and available in nearly every size configuration up to 5X5 "cubes". (I have 2 of the last...) :rocker:

Steevo I hate to be a pest but do you know what PN# you used for the leveling feet themselves? Searching the site you posted but can't find the ones rated that high in lbs.

I am thinking of building a 2 unit workbench. I notice that everyone includes a spacer.
Can I remove the side handle?
Can I **** them together?

Thanks
Bill

The side handles are easily removed.

Butting two boxes together and trying to span the entire width un-supported would be a problem, but if you had feet under the support structure, then why not?

In my case, the "spacer" is a leg to support the workbench top.

You went with the 30in gladitors I see. The 28in were just $89 at Lowes. I got one. Wish I could have afforded a few more right now.

Steveos 44 benches are a huge hit. Maybe one day I can do the same.

Thanks for the response. I think I am going to support them from below.

Concurr, even if the lag's hold, I wouldn't count on the 2X4's not failing...those things will get HEAVY. heck empty they are not light...

Nice looking, but get some front support...

No front support at all? Aren't you afraid of the upper lag bolts pulling off the wall? You may be ok when it's empty. Once they're loaded with tools, they may get too heavy.

Even before a support is placed, please put some bricks, 4x4's, or what-nots under there in case it did fall. I would hate to hear a story of someone's toes that got cut off because of a toolbox crashing down on them. Seriously, this is an accident waiting to happen. We don't want anyone getting hurt.

Steevo for president!!!
Newbie here. Just wanted to say thanks for the ideas and inspiration. If the "stealing of GJ ideas" equals flattery - you, my man, can consider your self as flattered as one can get!! Thanks again!

OK as a "rebel", Depending on the size, frequency, and location of the fasteners, I'm going to say the construction is OK.

Lets assume each loaded box is 1,000 pounds. Maximum distance from the wall is about 2 feet, so not a huge amount of torque. His height above floor isn't much.

The weight is spread across 10 feet, so that's about 300 pounds per foot of wall.

Is it worth it to be able to get unrestricted access? Probably not for me,but it was obviously important to the OP. Maybe the dog wants to lay under there?
