Got the other box dropped in and the top on. TV will move to the center and wall cabinets will be added later. Overall I couldn't be happier!

do you at all regret the 2x2 space in the corner under the cabinet you are losing?

I can't answer for Steevo, but I can give you some perspective on another alternative. I built a corner cabinet in my bench build in an effort to take advantage of that dead space. The good news is that it easy to build in another set of drawers to increase storage for example, the bad news is in my case it eats up another 14" of wall space and you still end up with dead space behind the cabinet. So, for an "L" shaped workbench Steevo's design is probably the most efficient while maintaining the smallest foot print.

Another solution that uses much more of that corner configuration is to leave off the drawer set, and put in a self, and use it for storage. with two levels of lazy Susan, you could store paint and the like, things you want reasonably handy, but don't need day to day.

Have to admit, a lazy susan for common hand power tools sounds amazing. drills, circular, reciprocating saw, etc Would need to be pretty heavy duty hardware for the weight of those.

I haven't personally regretted the loss of corner space, since I can set things on that back corner of the bench that I use less frequently (arbor press & movable vise), and open corners in my shop tend to collect junk.

I do occasionally wish that I had a "kneehole" for sitting at the bench, but couldn't afford to lose the wall space required to have the bench 2' longer on either end.

Heres my take on it. Skipped the hf box and went with a used equipto 5 drawer. 2x2 steel tubing, perfect plank "wildwood" butcher block top 96x30x1 7/8. Wilton 5.5" vice. Shelf is from my old equipto work bench. Work height is right at about 42". Thanks for the inspiration.

not very impressive, but im now a believer. Here is the work bench I just built around a 5 drawer equipto. My equipto doesnt have some of the features that lista has like locking the drawers if one is open. But I dig it. Top is a 96"x30"x1.7/8" and the shelf is from my old equipto work bench.

I gotta thank Steevo for the inspiration for my workbench project (Thanks Steevo!!). I'm excited I got the first part of the metal work done, now I just got to get the workbench top worked out. I'm thinking half butcherblock style top for the "clean projects" and then a steel top for the other half for the "dirty"

I have a double car tandem garage, the workbench will span the wall space between the door and the wall. I only got 8' to work with.

Painted it with some hammered finish paint from Home Depot, turned out perfect! I hope it's tough enough.

The next challenge is to get the tool box into the frame, how did you guys do it? (without a forklift -- like steevo)

Just lay your table on its back. Then slide the chest in. Stand it back up and put the drawers back in.

I'm really digging the way the paint came out. Seeing how these things are built in place, powder coating isn't likely an option for most.

I thought about throwing it in sideways, but I'm worried about scratching the good side of the paint (that still feels a little soft) - I'll see if I can convince a few buddies with beer to help me top load it.

The paint went on really nicely with a 2" foam roller and looks very uniform everywhere. A second coat in 2 hours and I got full coverage on everything.

Give the paint a chance to cure. Hammered needs about a week in good weather...

That heat lamp is a good Idea. give it time. Cold temps slow down the curing.

mask off at least the front of the box with painters tape to prevent scratches when you drop it in. hammered paint looks good

Did you have to treat that sheet metal top with anything to keep it from rusting?

Mine has been mostly untreated, and doesn't rust. I did rub it with some stainless steel stuff a couple of years ago, but that stuff is solvent based and evaporates off.

Climate is going to have something to do with rust too. SE Idaho is pretty dry relative to the Midwest or southern states, for example.

Currently, this thread has over 400k views and many replies. I believe it has inspired more workbench builds than any other on this forum. Steevo still visits it and offers advice and answers questions.

People wonder why this is such a great and addicting forum. When you have threads like this one and members like Steevo offering advice and answering questions, it's easy to see why.

Steve-o Any chance you can make some more detailed images listing your specs? Like length, width height, etc? Mainly curious about your length from bottom of leg to the bottom of box support, not including foot. And the overall height of your metal sidesto where they end above the box. It also appears your box is set about 1" deep below that line?

UPDATE: See Post #615 in this thread for the links to where you can download my diagrams.

I have the Visio drawings of my bench design available, and have emailed them to at least 125 people so far. I also printed the Visio diagrams to jpg files, and have them available to email to anyone that asks.

The Visio files are similar to ACAD files, in that they are editable, proportionally accurate, and dimensionally correct. The JPG files are basically decent-resolution pictures of the Visio files, but do show all of the dimensions.

I've seen the "Steevo Bench" emulated many times in other people's thread and never had seen the original. I finely have now seen it and understand what all the hype is about. I don't know if I'll ever make something similar, but it is a great use of space that is for sure. Thank you Steevo for the thread and sharing with others, you have inspired many!

Can't say enough good things about this thread. 3.5 years and 553 posts and the thread never got boring! Love all the innovation that this inspired. I have to admit, I'm going to be doing the same thing. I've got a 94" wall that has a ****** "left-over" kitchen cabinet in the corner and a Costco 60" workbench with 1 shelf, 2 drawers and a hutch. Terrible waste of space!

The two 44's should fit perfectly in the space with the 2" square tubing and leave plenty of room for a 2" receiver hitch!

Great build. question though, do you find if you're hammering something on the workbench, do the tools within the cabinets bounce and clang around?
thanks.

No. That is what the exo-skeleton steel frame does. It transfers any impact (and weight) directly to the floor.
I have done some serious "bashing" of stuff both bench-top, and clamped in a vise, and never heard anything clanging around in the drawers.
