Well, this is an amazing thread. It is full of amazing ideas for a workbench and tool storage. Fantastic work and special thanks to Steevo for sharing the methods.

I like it. I always liked the bench steevo made but my main concern was what the plan if needed to be moved? Seems like you came up with good compromise.

Thanks, doesn't look as finished but more useful for me. I can roll both out to make a table or get closer to a project.

Thought I would bump this up to let anyone thinking of this idea know that the boxes are on the Black Friday sale for 339....the cheapest I have seen them in a LONG time. Good Luck, Happy Thanksgiving!

Im Going to be picking up one of these 44" HF boxes for my dad for Christmas. It will fit perfectly under his workbench, but without the casters. Can anyone tell me what thread the caster bolts are so that I can get feet to screw in the box? I would like to have everything installed for him in a single evening so I won't have time to open the box then go to the hardware store. Thanks! Love these posts. Once I get a garage of my own I'll be doing something like this.

If you let us know where you are located, you will probably get a few suggestions for nearby vendors.
I'm in Orange County, CA. I've been doing some online searching to no avail. Doubt any of the local hardware stores (Home Depot/Lowes) will have anything. I may just trace the caster pattern on some spare 2x4 or 2x6 laying around and drill it and countersink the bolts. His bench has a clearance of 36" total so It should be able to still clear sitting on a 2x4/6. May even look into 1x4/6 for it.

Fantastic thread. I'll have to figure something out though as the area it's going in (basement workshop) is very small (only about 7.5' wide) and since its in the basement, no welding allowed. Maybe just a few of these would work...

Well I got it and muscled it under the work bench. It's a gift for my dad as he always puts his priorities last, I feel that with him retiring in a couple years it's time to dial in the garage so he can get back into wrenching and wood working more often. It's a work in progress but it's a good start I think. One day I will make him a badass Steevo Bench!

Steevo and others....what size tubing are you using? Sorry it might be buried here somewhere in the 33 pages but I couldn't find it.

Also, are you guys still happy with your HF boxes?

Thanks, Mike

for those that have built their benches with the work top having an overhang on the front, how far out are you making it, and how high from the top of the toolbox does the workbench top's bottom start?

Still in the planning stages on mine was looking at a 2x4 flat sitting atop the box, being attached to the top, and then having an overhang and was wondering if I could get away with 3-4" or if that's totally unrealistic. Thanks in advance.

cheechi,

As you can see near the top of this pic, my tool box top edges were nearly even with the top of the frame, which is where the bottom of the bench top rests.

My tops, including the solid core doors and the metal cap, are just under 2" thick, so my bench tops are almost 2" above the top of the box top edges.

My front bench top overhangs are 2" in front of the frame, and cause no drawer access restrictions. This was a concern I had when designing my bench, which is why I didn't go deeper with the overhang, but I believe that I could have gone with 3" with no issues.
My top-drawer top-edges are 5" below bench top, which just happens to leave the vise handle hanging just above the drawer top, so no interference when opening the drawer.

Hey Steevo
I admire your HF bench as many others do. Question - is the missing bolt on the vise intentional ( could not access a clear through hole)?
Is the vise still more than sturdy without it? I tend to really pull on mine and end up breaking things!

That was an older picture. The vise has four hold-down bolts now.

Thanks Steevo. I intend to have a 2x4 flat between the box and work top, it's close enough to your 2" space and your 3" recommendation was just what I was thinking.

Chalk up another one inspired by Steevo. Here's mine in my tandem 3 car garage, along with some relatively cheap Gladiator boxes for storage. 1.5" steel that was welded up with my Forney easy weld... I use the term "welded" loosely since I'm about as good with a welder as Stephen Hawking would be. Thankfully a bit of time with the grinder and enough paint heals all wounds. Top is a premade 8" Craftsman butcher block which in hindsight isn't deep enough, and a few panels of Wall Control to finish it off.

Anyone ever mount these back to back in an island type configuration? Looking for example pictures.

I think Paco aka Firestopper (might be spelled differently) did a island bench. Here is the only picture I could find at the moment. It's two cabinets back to back on each side with seating space between.

I bolted two identical "std" three drawer rollers back to back to make a stand for my big DeWalt RAS many years back and made a one piece Ply top. No pics and it's currently buried,

The trick was to put bolts in close to the corners so the metal would not flex and I used big washers to ensure clamping to the edges.

I also took off one caster per inside corner so it had six casters supporting but were not hitting each other, and used all swiveling casters.
