Earlier in the thread it was funny to hear the engineers going at it. If anyone's welds will not hold up a toolbox, then they have no business welding anything. Welders are born for engineers to have a hero to look up to.

Sorry for the insult. Just irritated the **** out of me that the Engineer criticized the welds. If a welder can't lay a bead to hold a toolbox up, then they don't need to weld.

Finished this WB island a few months back. Sitting area has receivers for those occasional jigs, vice, etc. One side services automotive tools and other serves machining tooling. The top is .120 with 2" legs on four sides that simply rests without securing to the two 3/4" BS plywood left over from the shop build.
Excellent choice of materials Steevo! Thanks for sharing too!

Unrelated to the box thread, I'm wondering if your floor is polished or burnished or do you have a coating on it? Thanks.

I’m almost done with my Steevo bench build and I’ve decided to repurpose my wheel castors to make some heavy duty Edsal vault cabinets mobile - but I need two more sets.

Does Harbor Freight sell the same wheels that came on the bottom of my US General chests? (I used the series 2 44” bottom boxes)

I’m not sure my OCD would allow me to mismatch the wheelsets.

And wow, it’s been SIX months since anyone replied to this thread!

Thanks Paranoid. I sent you an IM. The wheels I have/need are 6 1/2" tall from the floor to the top bracket. The wheel itself has a 5" diameter and is 1 3/4" wide. They look just like the ones on page 19 of this thread. Thanks

Tagging this.

Going to Black Friday myself a pair of 44" HF boxes and two of the side cabinets to build megabench. Plan to have it also include a knee hole, mini fridge and AV gear rack.

It will be a replacement my existing boxes and my homebuilt bench, I need more wallspace for cabinets. It will also be the first fabrication project in my new shop after an almost 4 year involuntary break (had no garage).

Question: What size and wall thickness box tubing would be best for this?
Have a 220v mig welder, plasma and bandsaw so dealing with thicker stuff isn't much of an issue.

2" x 2" x .120" wall tubing is more than enough.

Cool! Thanks for the response. 2x2 .120 should make it so I could park my truck on it if needed. I like overkill.

HF hosed me on the boxes (none available at the local store at sale price, none available within 75 miles). They didn't have any at start of sale much less during it. As a result I am pushed back at least a week on starting this thing.

That reminds me that I need to post pictures of my version of the HF workbench. It's already cluttered with junk.

I also had the same idea to build a workbench with these as a base and when I started googling for exact dimensions I came across this thread. So nice to find Steve's original plans, experience and everyone else's variants to pick and chose ideas from. Thanks to all, especially Steve, for taking the time to post.

One thing to note is that HF has changed the design of these cabinets (spring 2018?) to make them deeper. They are now about 22" deep - as opposed to 18" originally(?). This happened just as I was getting started on my project.

For my take I used 2 cabinets with a hole for a chair/stool in the middle. The 2 long angle iron pieces on the top (front and back) that support the bench top, I bolted to the supports instead of welding, just in case I ever need to disassemble or move. Along the bottom, I eliminated the long supports and instead bolted the cabinets (using the castor holes) to the short (front-to-back) angle irons on the side. The cabinets are sufficiently supported there already. This saves some material, and allows disassembly, if ever needed, and maybe makes it easier to assemble (I laid the cabinets down on their backs, supported on some wood, bolted on the uprights at both ends and then tipped them up.). Although, it introduces some other complexities.

Steevo, I have to pass on a little story that happened to me yesterday.....

I have been moving my Steevo inspired workbenches to my new shop over the last few weeks and yesterday I was moving my corner section which was on my trailer.

I decided to stop at the new HF location in Porter to pick up a couple of their small moving dollies to make it easier to move around in the shop. As I was getting out of my truck a guy walks up and says “hey I know that cabinet”.... instantly my ego puffs up a little and in my head I am thinking hey maybe he’s seen my YouTube channel or has seen a thread on here.... which he then goes on to say “that’s a Steevo workbench isn’t it.....” I smile trying not to show my now totally deflated ego and say yes it is....

So... Steevo you have done to work benches what Kleenex did to tissue..... you gone from an adjective to a noun.

After unloading the unit this morning I thought I would take a break and share....

Building my own Steve-o inspired bench does anyone have height dimensions on the 26" cabinet without the casters. I am probably going to set mine right on the ground since my bench is in an alcove and I can lag the bench to the walls on three sides.

My 44 that I just picked up this week was 42 W x 22D x 33.5" H without casters. 0.50" of that was the lip around 3 of the 4 edges to keep a 3/4" Ply sheet as a worktop. Since they are pretty modular I would take a leap and say the 26 is the same height.

I like the idea of using those 44's I am building an approx. 112 inch bench and I need drawers, so I think I'm gonna steal the idea also except mine will be wood frame. I figure 90 inches and and this will give me a sitting opening of 24 to 26 inches. Should work out great, just gotta wait for the deals to appear for two more of the 44's.

This is in reference to the newest deeper 44" set. Can you take the larger drawers out of the top chest and exchange them for some of the thinner drawers in the bottom chest?

I'd like to get all thinner drawers in the top, and have the thicker ones on the bottom.

I'm pretty sure I saw someone do that on the original 44", but have not seen it done on the newest version.

If it works; :dunno: I'm guessing if you did, it may defeat the "only one drawer open at a time" mechanism for at least some drawers?

If its built into an anchored bench, probably not an issue. If free standing you may want to see what you can do about that...
