'Hidden' gun safes?

I initially had my safe in the garage, where it makes more sense for me since that is where I reload and clean my guns. Then I realized my safe was less than 10ft. from my torch and my plasma cutter, its now in the house in a "fake" linen closet in the hallway. Well bolted in and recessed to make prying awfully hard to do, but its also a 1/4" steel plate safe so I doubt its going anywhere. After all that, I got good insurance :)

Wasted some time and searched the net for a coke machine safe and found this:

If you're not worried about fire ratings, this is a great idea!

Some people in my house like soda too much for me to even think about bringing in a fake soda machine.

Be even better if it dispensed a cold one. Think some people are missing the OP point, he just doesn't want someone walking by to look in and see a gun safe. Most people that see the big plywood box are thinking it's storage for tools or such and don't think twice (at least the honest ones).

I also forgot to mention if people come over for a party or if it is a contractor it keeps people from knowing I have firearms. A lot of times it is people telling other people about what they saw. I trust most of the people I let into my house; I don't trust the people they talk to. Ultimately all my gun related items will not be able to be seen by someone walking through my garage.

Not so much a "safe", as a hidden location, about 30 years ago I had a hand in making a pretty neat one. This went into a house in the Spring Valley section of D.C. I did the shop millwork, but there was some considerable skill brought to bear by the contractor/carpenters on the job as well.

Picture a spiral staircase (~5 foot diameter), with an octagonal stairwell of raised paneling. The panels were about 4' tall, iirc. In one of the "dead" corners, I made the stairwell raised panel open inwards on hidden hinges. The men on the job installed an electronic latch mechanism to activate the panel. The long guns were racked behind the panel in the corner (there was lots of space there, as indicated on the drawings). I never even got to see the finished project.

Here is a picture of the raised panel drop ceiling I made for that room. The staircase goes through the corner without panels.

How about buying one of those cheap $100 file cabinet type safes and putting it on the other side of the garage, possibly near the door. The crooks break in, grab the cheap safe and look no further. Put a couple of broom handles in it so it sounds like long guns falling over as they move the safe around before they break into it.

When I enclosed my pole barn, I added a seperate room to house my BB gun collection. When the slab was poured, I put a large gun safe in place and framed around it. Needless to say, if we sell the property, the gun safe stays!

I am a fan of camouflage.
I have not seen it, but a guy I worked with said he got an old upright freezer.
The kind with a built in lock.
And, working from the back, gutted it.
He slipped the safe in from the back.
When he slipped it into place it looked like any freezer.

You needed the freezer key as well as the safe key to get in.

I vote for camouflage. A friend has a space recessed into the wall, just big enough for a washer and dryer. He took the washer/dryer out and put his guns in. Then he built a bookshelf in front of it. He stood me in front of the bookcase and told me that his guns were inches from me and I couldnt figure it out!

Another guy has his guns hidden over the front door. Its an open space but you cant see up there and would need a ladder to look. Think of placing a shelf over the door with a face board turned up to make the lip that the guns sit behind

I had completely forgotten about this one:

When I was very young my father had a friend that he did long range shooting and reloading with. This friend had drywalled the bottom 2 feet and the top two feet only, in a section of the house wall. He had concealed hinges on the top of a section of pegboard, and screwed the bottom of the pegboard securely to the wall. the rIfles were concealed between the studs and behInd the pegboard. It had false screws at the top and the whole board was spaced a tiny bit off of the wall all the way around so the hinges wouldn't be obvious. He hung a few large items on the pegboard so it was easy to clear off. He even applied dirt and oil In the appropriate place to complete the camouflage.

Garage related too!

Gun safes concealed or not put too many guns in one spot.

If government ever comes for your guns will they find them? Some of them? All of them? What do gun sniffing dogs Q up on? Steel? Gun powder? Gun oil? What would be a good deterent? Red pepper? Powder and gun oil placed where there are no guns? ***** in heat urine? Heat goes up, so, guns below a slab should be OK in the event of fire but what about rust? Cops don't like to get dirty or work too hard, so, a rusty junk car in a poison ivy patch,,,yadda, yadda, yadda... Just thinkin' outloud.

If they ever actually start coming for them on a national, serious scale (God forbid), it's WAY too late for that kind of thing.

You'll likely be locked up for what you said or are known to believe at that point.

I had the same problem; I built a cabinet around my safe. I also added shelving on each side for storing other gun related items (mostly ammo and reloading components). The whole thing is framed in 2x4's the 2x4's are bolted to the concrete and the wall. The safe is also bolted to the concrete and the wall.

I really liked what you did in the garage on the gun safe.
How wide is it and especially the door widths. I assume they are 3/4" plywood?
I want to do it in my garage also it solves all my problems with my safe.
I also have a liberty safe alert I can hook up to it so if it even moves I get notices on my phone.
Any help would be appreciated.. John

As a disguise from casual observation while the door is open I would think about gutting a refrigerator and slipping the safe in from the back.
Nothing unusual about a fridge in a garage.

now my question;
if in an emergency, you need to see off some oink whoes broken in
how do you get to it quick enough?

from what I understand, every yank is sleeping with a gun under his or her pillow, or in the nightstand table?

You know, I've never really considered myself a "gun nut". I own a few pieces and I'm not paranoid. But. After reading jaye's comment, I do leave mine on the nightstand at night ! Lol. It's just where it ends up after I get home from work tho. My work shorts and shoes are below it with keys and everything

When we finished our basement last year we did built in book case on one wall and built in closet to hide my safe. Installed kid locks on all the cabinet doors to keep our now 2.5 yr old daughter out of all cabinets in the kitchen too.

And RE. Jaye s comment, I have a long and short gun within reach when I'm in bed and do not have to get out of bed for them to be ready. Don't consider myself a paranoid nut, I was a Scout and the whole 'be prepared' idea really stuck with me.

I'm sure you've already worked something out by now, but I find this quite cool.

That's made by Hercules Research, the company from the link I posted. The cushions are bulletproof and have carry straps... They have a matching ottoman safe for some of the couch models.

That must be the couch from all the movies where someone is hiding behind a couch that magically stops all shots being fired at them! That explains it!

2 things, gun racks and holsters. I wear my pistol always and try to keep my rifle on the rack but usually it lives in the safe. i need to get better at that.

One of these bolted to the nightstand is a good way to handle it. A quick release biometric pistol safe.

That's it! Now all we need is an explanation for all the lead bullets that spark when they hit something, including wood, plastics, fiberglass boats and other non-sparking soft metals. And maybe while they're at it they can explain how diesel powered boats always explode from fuel leaks... :wtf:

Until you decide on which way to hide your safe, you may wish to obtain a throw away refrigerator box from an appliance store, cut and slip it around your unit. When time and money permits, design and build something more appropriate.
You have a safe to keeps others out, now you just need to camouflage it from prying eyes.
Maybe mark it "Trash for recycle bin" or "Salvation Army Furniture." Use your imagination.

Slightly off subject, but my keys and wallet are in my room as well. Most people drop that stuff near the door. If someone breaks in, your busy getting your gun while they grab the first thing they see. Your money and keys. Most of us have more then one car. If your not home they could jump in your extra car pretty quick. You got to work to find my keys. I know it's just stuff and they might not get far, but they can do major damage to innocent people very quickly.
