I am just getting my 40x60 garage completed. Got my CO last week and pavers are going down now. I am lazy and feel like I don't have enough wall space. I say I am lazy because I have seen central vac options that have a reel to roll up hoses and I just don't want to do that nor take up the wall space. Also those reels just don't wind things up well without taking a lot of care. I found this product called Hide A Hose which the hose is stored in the central vac piping. It seems very cool! I picked up my central vac unit yesterday and the parts for the hide a hose will be here tomorrow (you have to use their fittings in order to store your hose). I am going to do my best to document the process so everyone can check it out. I don't think its very cost effective as I have about $800 rolled up in this thing without the time and energy to install. The central vac was about $250 and the hide a hose parts are $616.25 including a 60' hose. I think its a cool idea and I like to test things in the garage and perhaps incorporate them in my current home or future home :).

Very excited and wanted to share with the community!

Yes it's one hose and it says it can clean up to 2300 sq feet I think in the house I would put one on each end or one central and another on the first floor. It's difficult to install on two floors unless you have stacked closets or a basement run and an artic run. You put a plug at the end of the hose and then the suction from the motor pulls the entire hose up. What happens is you manually pull the hose out of the pipe and then lock it with a lever so when you **** up something bigger the hose doesn't get sucked back up!

This will be interesting to watch.
I have never seen them with a roll up hose.
Just a closet with hose hooks.

Here is a good video showing it in action:

This isn't my video FYI

There's all sorts of inapproprriate things I could say about the attractive young woman in that video playing with the hide-a-hose....OMG...it's too easy.

Does anyone use a central vac anymore? (It's kind of like the old 'whole house intercom' system)

By the way, we have both and they just don't get used...

When it comes to the central vac, it is far easier to just grab the Dyson rechargeable

We never use our central vac. A cord is easier to maneuver than the hose and the long hose rubbing on wall corners tends to cause some minor damage, even with the soft hose jacket. I do like the toe kick pans but it's not worth paying for a central vac just for those.

We have a Nutone central. Vac....house was built in 1970. We use it often for clean ups, dusting, cob webs in the corners. Still works and we'd be list without it.

Yeah I want the toe kick pan. I have three kids and I have to wear shoes in the kitchen to not feel the crumbs under feet!

Some parts came this past week. These are BIG 90's

One of the houses I built last year customer spec'd the hide-a-hose central vac and toe kick dust pan. First time I ever fooled with those.

I have a central vacuum in my home and like it. It cleans well and is easy to use. Storing the long hose is a pain and I will follow this thread and see how it improves the hose storage.

We laid a lot of pipe In my upper mezzanine trusses and mounted the central vac. Below are pics of the actual port. You can kinda see the lever open and closed to hold the hose when it's pulled out so it doesn't get sucked back up when vacuuming.

Got the system working and it's working quite well. The motor is a bit loud but it's a garage and I will see how much a muffler is. I'd say the biggest negative is the diameter of the hose and the extension tubes. You can see the end of the hose in the pipe in the second pic.

I fixed problem of needing to vacuum by getting rid of all of the carpet in my house. I sweep the hardwood floors once a week. My wife just bought a roomba and I have never had cleaner floors.

That Hide-A-Hose is pretty cool.

A+ solution. I love my roomba for the hardwoods on the main level of my house, and hate the carpet in the bedrooms with a passion.

Im sure those are great options but not shop worthy solutions! This is pretty good - but again I wish the hose was larger diameter for more larger debris.
