What can you guys tell me about Hinsdale Tools? Are they collectable, super rare & expensive, not worth the trouble it would take to toss them in the trash can, etc........

Not expensive at all, no. I can't speak to rarity in concrete terms, but I can say that they do not exactly flood eBay or flea market booths. People do collect them yes.

Hinsdale run the gamut from neat to dull.

The older examples with the name forged into shank are much cooler in Elroy's book

Hinsdale are nice old tools... Not really collectable, but nice. I would never throw any out, but I would not buy any unless they could be bought for a steal.

I always new of them from Chicago (I have an old catalog that has their Chicago address). Now I looked over at alloy artifacts and they did start out in Hinsdale, Illinois (makes sense and would explain the abundance of them out here, I'm about 5, 10 minutes from Hinsdale). There was also some interesting information about there relationship with S-K, another Illinois company.

From alloy artifacts, link;

The Hinsdale Manufacturing Company was founded in 1919 by Fred W. Miller, and operated initially in Hinsdale, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The founding date can confirmed by at least two sources: a reprinted early advertisement in AWM2e, and a 1947 Hinsdale catalog that provides a brief company history.

Not as old as my set... Nah.. Nah.. nahnah 1922 FTW.

Those are cool but could you imagine having to use them, not sure they're as user friendly as the new stuff.

Do an experiment, bring that set into work for one week and use only them where you can, report back.

Yeah... No doubt those tools where designed for simpler times.

I picked up these 3/8-dr sockets yesterday, 'cause I liked the design, especially how super short they are.

That's a 7/8th socket next to the ruler and next to a New Britain 7/8th.

Here's some homes in Hinsdale, real nice area, I think there is an estate sale there this weekend. Don't find many tools in those homes, the girlfriend likes the estate sales in that town.

Highball, those are much older than 1922. I have a socket set that my great grandpa bought around WW1 and it's a ratchet like yours, but the sockets are like the one that J.A.F.E. posted.

Yeah, I was making my assumption by the date on the ratchet. Everything in that box came from the same place and im not sure what goes with what. I see you are from StL (Go CArds) I actually picked this set up not to far from you in Wentzville MO.

1/2 drive 12 point, pretty beat up.
13/16, 5/8, 9/16, 1/2, 7/16.

I’m not an intentional collector of Hinsdale. Already had 2 and stumbled across some more at my local restore and picked them up. Cost me about $1.25 in total.
Feels cool mating these old sockets together even if it’s not a particularly sought after brand.

Not trying to sell but if someone is a collector I’d be happy to pass them to a loving home at cost + shipping + picture with them among your collection when received.
