I ordered a 54" combo from a local napa here in Seattle, what's the best way to get this into a garage and setup? For sure it won't fit into my BMW 135i :)

Congrats! Nice setup and nice car!

I would load it with friends in a pickup but I'm cheap haha. You could probably pay a little to have a freight or shipping company move its otherwise see if the napa guys could help you out? Sure they have something they could lift it with. Otherwise rent a trailer maybe

Actually just drove the 2600 miles from Toronto to Seattle in 3 days last week.

I think the ramp option is what I need to do it safely and at least 1-3? other guys.

Rent a U-Haul pickup and trailer (w/ ramp)

Is it possible to have it shipped by truck?

NAPA doesn't deliver.

They have a forklift there, but I'm going to need something with a lift gate I think and a pallet jack.

And then the question of separating the top and bottom, might just do that with the forklift at napa if they are ok with it.

I never do anything easy....

I don’t have the RS Pro but I have the ProII, very similar boxes. I installed both of mine and carried in the box of my truck side by side. I cut the box off the bottom and laid all the card board and foam on the ground, next I slid the bottom, pallet and all out of the truck and onto the cardboard standing it up on its side, I then pulled the pallet off and tipped it onto its casters, my truck being lifted helped me install the top but I think a regular height truck would work too, I just cut the box off and slid it onto the bottom roll cabinet. It can be done without a lift gate or a helping hand795decafc04436cafbb07a7b32c3a8b3.jpg

Holy smokes, this is one gigantic thread.

I am looking at deep 72-inch rolling boxes with stainless top to replace a hopelessly shallow (barely 16-inch deep drawers) Husky 41-inch combo and a 26-inch Craftsman combo (bottom drawers just about 18 inches deep). I have some tools in there that will end up in cabinets and some I will sell off, because, well, having duplicates, while a helluva lot of fun and a bit of a sickness (see countless threads on this forum), is something I can now do without. So, I am pretty sure the 72-inch Homak RS Pro roller will work just fine, allowing me to keep tools better organized, below eye level, grouped as I need them, etc.

I like the layout, the price, the stainless top, the mods you guys have done (power strip, extra slides added to the 54-inch boxes, etc.), and the color options.

Any regrets from the folks who bought these boxes over the past two years? It looks to me like Summit is the way to go presently, since the Napa price is so much higher now and Homak direct is pretty steep.

It sounds like a good chunk of people on here had damaged units. That's sort of depressing, but par for the course for a big metal box shipped from overseas and handled by various freight and transfer companies before it gets delivered.

Other than Harbor Freight, did anyone chose any other box?

I would be interested to know how the extreme tools and tool vault boxes compare to the Homak but I have yet to hear any real world direct comparison from someone. Also I'm pretty sure at least the tool vault has detent slide retention vs. the latch system - and I'm curious how the latches on the extreme and homak compare vs longevity and adjustability of the tool vault detents?

You guys have any strong feeling if these will come down in price at all? The 72" is a nice box, but can't say I love it for $1699. Should have jumped on it years ago. :willy_nil

I went by the big NAPA in town today, and they actually had a black 72-inch RS Pro toolbox on the floor. The two-sided sign had two different prices on it: $1572 and $1720-something, roughly $150 different.

And they said the item was discontinued and there was no stock beyond the floor model, which had a really beaten up stainless top.

If I get the box, it will be via Summit, it appears.

Well, they did advertise if for this quarter. The box on the floor could have had an old stock number, and, based on the experience of the various members of this forum who bought the boxes, Napa seems to deliver a different level and commitment to stocking these boxes depending on where you live.

I would guess it's still possible to order the toolbox, but it depends on how much that guy behind the counter wants to make it happen.

For those that ordered the combo, did you get matching top and bottom locks? Mine are different.

There is a giant warning label on the bottom saying machine lift only. We managed with just the two of us but had to use some heavy duty totes onto a dolly cart to slowly lower it down from a Tundra.

Everything turned out great.

You can use one of 2 coupon codes MAK10 will get you 10% off any items that are on sale, use MAK20 for 20% off any regular priced items. you can not use the coupons with other coupon codes.

Looking for an upgrade for a bottom-barrel Craftsman, interested in a ~72 box. I heard about this Homak after randomly stumbling across it mentioned in a YouTube video while looking for reviews of the 72" US General from Harbor Freight (which I had pretty much already settled on until learning of the Homak). General consensus seems to be that it's better then the HF box and worth the extra few hundred dollars. Although I wasn't able to find any direct comparisons of two. So far the only thing I've seen directly comparing them was a mention that the US General drawers are more wobbly side-to-side, however that problem seems to be easily solved with the addition of one rivet at the rear of each drawer slide. Does anybody have any hands-on experience with both boxes and can elaborate on the differences? Pros/cons of each?

Also, this box is virtual non-existent on Napa's website. A search for part numbers yields results containing the part number and a price, virtually nothing else. The current Napa Real Deals catalog lists BL04072164 (72RSPCSS) for $1,725. The first post of this thread shows NA17072282 (72RSCASS) for $1,299. What's the difference between RSCASS and RSPCSS? I thought maybe one was with the Stainless Steel top and the other was without, but the cheaeper option clearly states it does have the SS top.

price has gone up on the homak so fair chunk of change between it and US Gen 72"
The 72" masterforce is better than the homak in many ways .
HF 72" coupon price is 999.99, wouldn't pay more than that .
homak and masterforce are 24" depth while us gen is 22", have better wheels and construction and proper drawer pull latching (masterforce has better latching than homak)
drawer layout is critical so be sure what you choose works for you .

I don't think Masterforce is a viable option for me. It's currently $1,889.99. Plus I don't live near a Menards and shipping quote to FL is $767.96. That brings the total to $2,657.95 (excluding the "rebate" which apparently is Menards store credit?). I'd rather buy a pair of US General 72s for that cost!

The US General is currently $1,199.99, plus $84.31 tax for a total of $1,381.24. There aren't any current $999.99 coupons that I've found.

The Homak RS Pro from NAPA is either $1,725.00 ($1,828.50 after tax) or maybe still $1,299 ($1,376.94 after tax) if the website listing for NA17072282 is to be believed.

The same varying price oddity can be seen direct from Homak also, it's either $2,099.00 for the BL04072164 WITH a stainless steel top or $2,420.95 for the BL04072160 WITHOUT the stainless steel top. A $320 premium to *not* get the SS top? No tax, and apparently shipping is free?

Summit Racing has the BL04072160 (no SS top) for $1,552.99 plus $189.00 shipping for a total of $1,741.99.

Assuming the $1299.99 NAPA price is legit, it certainly looks like it's worth the extra $100-$300 over the US General. Otherwise the next cheapest option is Summit for an extra 550-750 over the US General. At that price, is it *still* a worthwhile upgrade?

EDIT: Just going to throw in a few of my thoughts on the differences between US General and Homak. I read through this whole thread and still have seen practically no direct comparisons. I don't own either, so these are just some of my "notes"... Please correct me if I'm wrong in any of these!

The Homak does has an objectively better drawer latching system, with the important flaw in that the latches are inside the drawer and it's possible to lock yourself out of a drawer if a tool or socket slides underneath the latch. The US General latch is apparently easily broken and harder to access as it's buried on the far right of every drawer pull, but is also easily disabled and with a simple inexpensive mod you can have drawers held shut magnetically instead of using the latch at all. The same could probably be modded for the Homak, so the way I see it the Homak only gets a slight advantage here due to the better "stock" latching mechanism.

I've seen a few mentions of the Homak having better casters. I'd like to see them compared side by side. Judging solely from the pictures it *looks* like the US General has a superior design simply due to the spring suspension on all four corners. And are they also a larger diameter wheel?

The Homak uses 18-gauge steel, and the US General uses 16-gauge.

After reading the thread, I really like the Homak but I'm struggling to find reasons why I *should* like it more than the US General! Especially if it's no longer available at $1,299.99. Convince me!?

No massive difference in steel thickness, US General user/review claims are bit off on drawer thickness .
Homak probably worth extra 300-500 but that about it & you need be fussy on the benefits to want pay it .
Masterforce was 1200-1300 with rebate not that long ago but 1600+ is getting into range where you far better making effort & spending 1500 to 2500 on used truck boxes like mac and matco or snapon if see a reasonable price .
If US General 72" dimensions, drawer layout, local retail outlet and price works for then at coupon price they a fair value buy and pretty easy option.
Do review them again in store and be sure plastic drawer latch and general components like slides and wheels suitable for your intended use .
Napa pricing and actual availability is a complete mess, hard to believe they an established retailer with muddle they make selling shop equipment :-/
They been a muddle on selling homak boxes since day 1 ...

There's no comparison. The US General box I looked at in store felt like the other big box stores product, just a little heavier built. IMO the slides on the Homak are much smoother and the fit, finish and looks are just better. I'm surely biased since I went with the Homak, but even with my less than stellar CS experience with Homak I'm still 100% satisfied with my purchase. Mine's loaded up and the drawers open and close like butter.

Edit: Boxes are purely personal preference. If you're one to just throw tools in drawers than the Homak and similar latch system may not be for you. Drawer layout should also be part of your decision making process.

They're no longer $1299. Price has gone up significantly, and lately it seems the best place to buy one is from Summit.

I recently investigated these boxes. I was only able to find 1 review that was after a year of use:

Seems like a good box. I decided against it though. Homak is charging $2k and for not much more, you can pick up an Extreme Tools box that's ~7" taller and 1" deeper (albeit, w/out the stainless top). That extra turns out to be about 10,000 more in^3. At the old NAPA pricing, it's a no-brainer though. Too bad that price is no longer.

Is the NAPA pricing no longer accurate? I've been curious about getting a Homak for the overflow in the home shop. Looking at NAPA's site, there are some good options in the $1,000-1,300 range.

Anyone have any long term updates? I am looking to buy directly from Homak now.

I have two of the big bottom boxes with SS top. Have had 'em for a year or so. They're well-made boxes with no QC issues that I've noticed. Well worth the price, IMO.

Have had my 54" RS Pro bottom for 2.5 years now and work out of it two-three days a week. Two gripes; 1. Should have got 72" and 2. The drawer end tabs can be knocked off. Otherwise, love the box. Wish they had a decent hutch option available. Plan is to build one once done with my history project ('82 Corvette getting LS3/auto trans swap).

I'm still satisfied with my 72" combo but I'm a "professional lite".... increasingly I seem to be doing auto repair but I've also moved my core tools to a US General 5-drawer cart so the big box sees less action.

Can someone post a photo of how far the drawers open at the back of the box? I looked at some other boxes and it looks like you lose almost an inch of the drawer with it being covered up at the back. Do these fully clear on the top drawers and the other drawers?

I guess the HANDLES technically cover the rear of the drawer below but in person they basically open 100%

Thanks so much! Yes I consider that open enough were if you had something in the back you could still get it out. Are the top drawers the same? On a lot of boxes the top drawers generally open less. Thanks again.

Upper drawers are identical, just verified in the shop

For anyone interested Homak is having a black friday sale until December 2nd. On top of that there is coupon "c2w" I found from a YouTube reviewer which takes off another 10%. I just purchased the 54" RS Pro with stainless steel top. Seems like the $1300 for the 72" box hasn't been offered for awhile which is a shame and definitely what I would have got.

It was a really hard decision between this and the Harbor Freight US General models. The 44" US General I think will just be too small for me. I know I could have bought 3 for the price of the Homak but I really like the stainless steel top and I don't really want multiple 44" cabinets. I looked at the US General 56" and I just don't like the latches at all.

An update for anyone who stumbles upon this thread in the future.

I ordered Black Friday November 27th. I received the box today Thursday December 3rd. Less than a week which is impressive. I guess they built up an inventory for their sale and could ship right away. Plus I am in NY and they ship from PA so it's close too.

Box had no damage to worry about and I am very picky. Some scratches on the very bottom of the box where the wood supported the box on the pallet but there is literally nothing to prevent this when shipping a big heavy item like this.

I got the 54" RS Pro and the top drawer now has 2 slides on it! I guess they listened to feedback. I was planning on buying the extras so nice to see it has it now.

Overall I am super excited. Can't wait to fill it up.

Sounds like a good experience. And great to hear they listened to feedback and added the second set of slides. After adding to my 54" RS Pro I'm ashamed of how I've abused that drawer. SMH
:D

Look forward to seeing images of you with a filled box. I'm ready to look at buying a side cabinet. Didn't give in Black Friday, but soon.

I wanted to post an update since I think I've had this box since June of 2018. It is for home use, but 3-4 days a week or so I'm in there. No issues at all thus far. I haven't had any issues with the caps coming off of the handles. Drawer slides are still as smooth as they were when I first loaded the box.

I've attached a picture of the current configuration (just under 9' long). I will be removing the one locker soon to fit the box between the back wall and the chimney in the garage, which is 8'. Eventually I'd like to eliminate the lockers and add the 22" side cab with stainless top, but not in a hurry to do so; maybe holiday sale end of this year.

I do have some minor complaints; none of these make me wish I had gotten another box. I wish the latches were on the outside of the storage area of the drawers, but are still a million times better than the HF latches. And I would sacrifice the center bank bottom two drawers for two 4.5-6" height drawers (like the medium height drawers). I use the vertical plier racks and only got two drawers that work well for those (left and right banks) and both are too small. So I have most in the top left drawer in the racks and the drawer below I have others. I'm still messing with some of the drawers but lets be honest, are any of us really ever done organizing our boxes?
