Never heard of such a policy. Gotta be quickdraw at self checkout plus receipt in hand to shut down an overzealous MOD jumping the counter

Those 4" Christmas bessey clamps were marked to 2.90 at my store this week. On last Wednesday they were still full price. There were still several packs of the 6"/12" clamps last week as well last Wednesday but none today and no signs or indication they were supposed to be there so I'm guessing they were finally discontinued. Might be worth checking your stores for penny deals on them. I've picked up several of them since Christmas and they are nice clamps for the money.

My store seems to be really good at pulling discontinued items so there's never any penny deals

This. I think the only way I'm likely to get a penny deal is to watch SD every night into, say, 5am, and then get to my store the second they open. If I could learn of a penny deal within hours of it hitting that price I might get one before my store pulls it.

I went to home depot after work yesterday and was trying to see if I would get lucky and find a dewalt table saw dw745. I only see the new one and noticed an open used one on top of a dewalt miter saw. I waited about 10 minutes to find an employee and ask about it. She tried to say it was $319 and I insisted it was selling for about $200. She called her supervisor and he checked with his boss and asked how much was I willing to pay. I said $100. He came back and said he would sell it for $100 and if I be interested in an air compressor. I told him not really as I have an ingersoll rand t30 but I would look at it. It was a rigid mini wheel barrow air compressor that had a marker writing on it for $279. I told him I would give him $50 for it he said $80 and I said ok. I then see a milwaukee case and ask about that and get a milwaukee m12 3/8 drill with 2 batteries and charger for $65. As I'm walking back to my cart in the tool section where I left the table saw on. It was gone. I see a guy up front walking back with the supervisor towards me with the table saw. I guess he heard our conversation for $100 and he said he thought I left and didn't want it and he had a guilty look on his face. Since it was not in a box I knew I was going to have a hard time purchasing it without getting an employee involved and I feel I still scored at a $100.

My comment was on the penny air hose reel post as that was first time mention of air hose reels marked down. Maybe he'll post up pic's too for SYS award ! ;)

Some stores lack proactive employees/managers. Though it was far from a penny deal, I got my 6-ft step ladder for $49 thanks to lazy or unobservant HD workers. The end cap at the front of the store had a big handwritten sign with the lower price. The aisle had the regular ($79) price. It rang up at the normal price and when I pointed out the sign the cashier called someone while adjusting the price. After getting back to the truck I checked the website and sure enough, the sale had ended. I usually get to stores at or around opening time (a good thing about erratic sleep patterns) and notice that employees like to procrastinate for the first hour or two.

I've been there for 11 years now. When a price change comes down from Atlanta through the scanner it is accepted and then the price is changed on the shelf. most items have a home location in the store (13-04 or wherever) so that label can be changed easily. If something is "No Home" like Christmas or seasonal stuff it may not be found as easily so it could pass through numerous price changes in the overhead or whatever. When it gets to a penny it becomes "destroy in field" or a "promo giveaway" (like you get free product if you sign up for a credit card or whatever). If you guys only new the amount of stuff I've seen thrown down the compactor in my 11 years!

That must ****, watching perfectly good stuff go to waste. I've been overseeing a new equipment fielding for the Army and there is a lot of leftover hardware (nuts, bolts, brackets, etc...not computer stuff) that will go to units and probably sit in a conex somewhere before ultimately getting tossed.

As an aside, Home Depot is a GA company that has more stores than the NC-based Lowe's (according to Wikipedia), yet has forsaken much of rural GA. The Savannah area has three locations, as well as one in Bluffton, SC, but otherwise I have to travel an hour to Brunswick or three hours to Cordele. Lowe's, on the other hand, has locations in many smaller cities--Hinesville, Statesboro, Waycross, Americus, Vidalia, etc. Just an observation by a frustrated consumer...I'd love to have more HD locations to search for deals at.:soapbox:

I'm guessing it was the display model where they took off the blade and nut and put it back into a box. Still a great deal

Do they really destroy these items? Why not donate them or do something useful with them?

That's what I was thinking but it had no dust anywhere on it. As far as the blade I always put on smaller tooth blades on anyway.

Anyone have the SKU for the bessey clamps? I found a few in my local store but they are still $17.97 here. I forgot to take a picture of the SKU before I left so that I can call a few other stores to check prices. That ***** that they are still full price here.

Found the Ryobi Miter Saw Stand (clearance SKU 1000-053-618) on the shelf at a Home Depot near me. Not surprisingly, it rang up for $0.01 but the cashier was paying close attention and said, "Oh, we can't sell it for that" and called the manager. She adjusted the price to $15.02 using a generic SKU. I was OK with that although I would've liked the opportunity for some 'suckage' on a penny deal.

On the way out, I told her I wouldn't tell HD corporate for having penny items on the sales floor. When I got home, I noticed it had a yellow RTV (return to vendor) tag on it but it was on the shelf with the other stands (at regular price).

In any event, it was a nice surprise and I can put the stand to good use. Granted the deals are becoming quite scarce keep your eyes open and good luck. You never know...

what about the blind carpenter?
he picked up his hammer and saw

Now THAT would be a hot deal. A hammer that grants the gift of sight. It would probably be gone in the blink of an eye, but I'd bet the pupils of GJ would probably still keep their eyes peeled for a coupon to stack.

I hope that wasn't too cornea joke.

I bet that is how I missed on getting a Milwaukee M18 jigsaw cheap it was either destroyed or rtv'ed. My store is really bad at updating the price stickers on clearance items. They have 3 of the Makita 2x 18v circular saws but they only had it marked down to like $190.

Mine are about the same. I'm wondering if they're ever going to drop them any further?

I don't know the next time I go up I'm going to have a cashier scan them. The original BF deal was you got two free batteries with the saw. I might have missed out on some deals because my store is lazy on re tagging clearance items. This is the same store that tried to sell a well worn display Bosch Bulldog Sds for over $100 dollars.

I always verify the price at the self checkout. I have gotten at least 3 good deals at a penny apiece. I got a husky tool bag/parts bin, husky 4 piece double ratchet box wrench set and 3 packs of SAE short Allen wrenches.

When I got the bag I found a penny on the way out so it was "free" so to speak

Because that would remove a full paying customer from the potential buyer pool. I ran a school Tech Ed program. If I had stores giving me discontinued stuff for free I would never buy anything at full price.

I could swear I read (possibly in this thread) why HD doesnt donate "to be destroyed" stuff to a charity like that.

I want to say it had something to do with the fact that if stuff broke they would go back to HD to try and get it covered/replaced, causing all sorts of issues with HD and whatever brand stuff they were trying to get fixed.

That does make sense, they don't want to be responsible for providing faulty equipment, etc. Just curious, not saying it's right or wrong. I'm sure many other companies/business do the exact same thing. Just ***** to see a good tool get destroyed!

When I worked clothing retail we'd just cut the tags when we donated to the homeless shelter. A cut tag attempted return, we'd just say sorry, this item was not purchased. Likewise Milwaukee engraves refurb stuff so they're not providing the 5 year warranty.

There are ways. If this is HD's excuse, it doesn't hold water. And donating to tech schools only fosters good will. I still like Kennametal 'cause they were a huge help to our machining program.

In the end, a loss on HD's income statement provides the same tax benefit as a donation, without all the logistical nightmares.

Maybe it's time for more tax reform.

First pic was a set of magnetic Bessey nylon vise jaws I found on clearance at 2 stores yesterday. Not sure it's an incredible deal, but I think it's pretty fair. I bought a set for me and tried them last night, they stick just fine and look like they'll do the job.

The 2nd and 3rd pic are my first penny deal! :lol_hitti
I was traveling yesterday coming home from seeing family so I decided to stop at stores along the way and see what I could find. Pickings were slim, many of the current deals you guys have now are not priced the same in my stores and price checks confirm that. That's odd, I know, because usually HD stores are mostly the same as stuff starts to clearance out.
Anyways, one store's tool department just looked a mess when I walked in and I thought "if anyplace is going to have stuff hidden this is it". Digging around, I stumble on the DeWalt driver which I had been looking for to get for my dad. He likes cordless screwdrivers and his old died on him. I expected to pay whatever the last mentioned price was - around $15-18? I went to do a price check and it rang a penny - SURPRISE! I canceled and walked away to look for more stuff. When I found nothing I dug a penny out of my pocket and prepared to do what many on here say - scan, pay, walk out before anyone notices. I walked up and got through the scan and pay part but then the machine wouldn't spit out my receipt. I decided "oh well" and started to leave until the self-check girl called to me to stop and I thought I was out of luck. I turned around and she says "don't you want your receipt?"
The receipt had spit out at her desk instead of my self-check, she handed it to me (I assume she never looked at it) and I left. Yay, lol... :willy_nil

So thanks everyone, now back to the hunt.

I just have to try and picture the logistics of trying to self checkout a DWS782 or DW745.

I would do whatever I had to do to get it for a penny, but you have to look like an absolute tool trying to scan one of those huge things in the self checkout lane :)

I hate you. At this point, I believe they are all penny deals. The 782 is in stock online at $400, but it's $.01 in-store. FWIW, I called the closest HD and they said it wouldn't be a problem to bring an online order in to return and rebuy as long as it wasn't a special order item, meaning the SKU started with SO. When she noticed that the item in question was a penny, she said I'd have to talk to the manager about it to see if I could get it for $100. I'm not going to bother, but those of you that can float the $400 for a few days and have the time to convince a manager to do it might want to try.

This has been the question since the milwaukee promo haha - don't think anyone has posted a success/fail attempting it on anything, though.

Some people said ALL online orders get shipped back post-return - but, some of us were wondering - if there's a store SKU - would a return/rebuy on the spot work.

Hmmmmmm.

I tried on the Milwaukee hole saw kit.... Ordered it for $31 online and tried a return/rebuy for $10. Got several employees involved and they tried but HDs system would not allow it.

The dewalt kit that I ordered online had to be shipped back.... I even returned the exact same kit (bought in store) and they put it back on their shelf. It is a normal SKU so I have no idea why they shipped it back.
