My new favorite computer to use is in the lighting department. They don't always have them, but when they do it's usually mounted on a wall or an endcap with little traffic.

You don't get as much attention there and can conduct your searches in peace.

The one in lawn and garden seems work good for me. I hardly ever get bothered by anyone except if an employee needs to use. I have have been asked if I needed help, but when I told them what I was doing they were fine with it.

Two of our stores actually have a computer right when you walk in, specified for customer use. I walk in and go directly to it and no one ever says a word.

I sometimes wonder if they can "replay" the searches we do in the app, letting the employees know what we expect to be on clearance if they dont already know.

Well I know at one store I go to, the computer by the garden door always has a stack of 1 cent clearance stickers, with a number in a circle written next to it. These are obviously inventory counts of what they're supposed to pull of the shelf. I've tried looking for these, but apparently they beat me to it every time.

Twice so far at this store, I've basically been gifted a penny item. One time they had a stack of nasty magenta women's garden gloves at the computer, with a 1-cent sticker sitting on top of the stack. I got one for the wife, she didn't like it. Another time, they had a small bottle of laundry detergent at the computer with a 1-cent sticker stuck to it. I just finished the bottle yesterday.

Unless I am just completely missing them...the only computer I have found at my store is at the pro desk facing outwards. All other computers are at a desk with office chairs and usually an employee sitting at them.

Good to know i didn't know that those were also available to the public! Now I don't have to stand out in front of everyone at the pro desk thanks!

No, not the ones that look like sales desks. These are amongst the light fixtures and sometimes look really random and out of place. They're also always at standing height.

I was in one of the stores yesterday and noticed the same thing -- stack of 1c stickers at the workstation in the garden dept. Obviously, when you see the pile of stickers then somebody has a job to do and those items are about to disappear. When that happens it's time to go grab the items off of the shelf.

I haven't yet determined if the garden dept's 1c stickers are for their department only, or if the whole store gets it's 1c stickers through that department. I haven't seen the pile of 1c stickers in any other dept, and I'm wondering if the fact that we both saw this in gardens is just a coincidence.

One of the stickers was for a propane heater, which is nowhere near the garden center. See here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4930094&highlight=couldn't+find#post4930094

Check the SKU on the 1cent sticker and go look for the item....

Coralnut that's as close to penny deal if I ever saw one . Heck you got the sawall and batteries for free. Just like when I got a leftover Dewalt portable table saw that was left over from Black Friday for free when it scanned at a penny.

Nice Job man, Nice hunting. Heading out on Saturday, well maybe Thursday after work for another hunt myself.:rocker:

I got my first unicorn deals last night... Sort of... When I get home from work I'll post the 'deets'. It wasn't an especially fun experience.

Got 1 more Bostitch coil framing nailer. Apparently it was being held for a customer behind the customer service desk for a long time.

Any way you may be selling one?:dunno:

Yeah! I'd totally buy one and also an M18 Fuel Impact Driver if any of the people who got stashes of those has any laying around. Or if anyone has one at their local store unbought.

I confirmed today there is only one other computer at standing height in my store back with the appliances but it has a scanner and credit card machine...is this a public computer? Also what do you do when the "app" screen with the price checker button is not already opened?

If nothing else works you can always close everything out and click the start button and select the program from there. Also, a couple of stores I visited have a credit card machine and stuff as well but are still for public use.

My Home Depot is like my Lowes. You can't get any deals like you guys find.

They have a table with returns and damaged items that has stuff on it a year old and 15% off.

My local HD are out of the DS150 & DS400, but a few mile at another HD, they have 6 available. Store manager wouldn't allowed a price match of 13.03 or 18.03. Told me to purchased it at my local store and to pick up at the other store. My local store couldn't do it, but I did get a Ryobi 12amp Circular saw for $0.01.

My Home Depot is also just like my Lowes. I can't get any deals like everyone finds either. I've been in there every other day for the past month -- nothing. I used to think that I'd get a deal by dropping into my local HD regularly. Didn't work. After a month of coming up empty handed I decided that I had to try a little harder.

To get deals I had to map out all of the HD and Lowes stores within a 1-hour radius of my house and drive to every one of them. It took 10 hours. If you don't do the hunt, you don't bag the deal.
If there is one thing that this thread has made clear to me, it's that you're wasting your time looking on the "bargain" table. You're never going to find anything there but unwanted junk. You have to look in the rafters for merchandise that has been misplaced, discontinued, and forgotten about.

Finding the deals is hard, boring and time-consuming work. Nobody's handing out free lunches at these stores -- you have to do some real legwork to find the deals -- and you'll probably still come up empty handed. If you take away all of the stuff that I bought on the 40% TV coupon deal, then I visited 10 stores to find the 3 DS150 and a saw.

Driving to one store and not finding what you're looking for isn't much effort. It's too early to complain about not being successful, you haven't really given it a serious effort. Finding these deals takes a lot of effort. Even when they're in the store that you visit, you might miss them if you haven't honed your skills at finding them. The deals don't just jump out at you.

Exactly......today for example. Saw that there were three items on hand for what I was looking for but didn't see them anywhere. Normally if it's only one item on hand I have a hard time making myself hunt for it since it could be stolen or lost somewhere in the store.

I asked an employee about it and he pulled it up on his handheld. He told me what they all say which is "look in the clearance section". I told him it wasn't there and asked him to climb up on the ladder. He climbed all the way to the very top and found all three of them. His response? "Wow, that's a really good deal!!." I think he was kind of bummed when I took all three of them.

Can someone give me a run down on finding killer deals at HD? I just read about 20 pages of this thread really don't have the time to read the rest... well atleast not tonight.

From what I've gathered you can take a sku posted here and price check at an instore computer (can you do this at self checkout)?
And you can price check items at self checkout.

But aside from price checking an sku posted here, how do you find a deal? I'm sure there's more to this.

ITs fine running around for 10 hrs if you're reselling stuff and this is like a business. If you're looking for a deal on a nailer to do some carpentry work killing 10 hrs just isn't worth it.

Ok, here's the story of my unicorn deal. First, the bounty:
k929WOu.jpg

5x LED Lightbulbs and 1-Gallon of WD-40 Specialist Rust Soak

Monday night I was at the local HD hunting around for M18 Fuel Impact drivers and Toughboxes unsuccessfully. After giving up, I swung back by the actual clearance rack and saw these lightbulbs. They were something like 3.53 and regular price was 20$ so I figured that was a good enough deal to give them a try. Brought them home, put them in the living room and they were awesome! Really bright, and a nice warmth. Instant on (unlike stupid CFLs!) and supposedly they will last 20 years. I resolved to get the rest of them the following day.

On Tuesday, I went back to HD and grabbed the remaining 5 bulbs, then headed up to the Pro computer to look around a bit more. Sorted by all clearance and I noticed this:
gsijqRT.jpg

I had just bought a gallon of Evaporust from HF for like 25$, and this stuff was even more, nearly 28$. It took me a while but I found them with the other rust products in automotive, and there was no clearance sticker. They were marked full price.

I brought the bulbs and the jugs up to self checkout and price checked. It rang up full price. I brought over the cashier and asked her for help showing that picture on my phone of the price for the Rust Soak. She called over what I assume was the manager... I showed him the picture and right away he got accusatory. "What is this? We don't do this this isn't ours. It's 28$" and I said "It's off your computer right over there. Let me show you".

I brought him over to the pro computer and it was still up on the Rust Soak page. He started swiping frantically saying "This isn't our app what is this thing you've put on here look at the URL this is fake" (The price checker app url is really weird like https://www1.tsturil.teruiaosf14.com/fajwofpj) and I said "I'll show you how I got here." I closed the price check app. Reopened it, entered the SKU and tada it was right in front of him. He then said "This isn't right. This is for employees only not for you you can't use this. You have to use the website right here" and tried to open the HD website. I stopped him and said that I had received a survey on a receipt about a month ago asking if I'd used the Pro Computers, if they worked and were useful, if I had tried the estimators, the price checker app and so on. He said it was talking about using the website. And I said it specifically said "Price Checker App". I fought with him for a while telling him that it was obvious HD corporate wants these computers to be used by customers in this way and he kept telling me I wasn't allowed anymore and to stay off it. Then I said "So...?" and he said "Look I'll make you a once in a life time deal do you want the price or not?" and I said "Yes".

He brought me back over to the self-checkout and started scanning stuff. He said "Look just take one" and started to try to price adjust the rust soak. The computer wouldn't let him and he claimed it was because it was flammable... That made no sense to me but he said he can't do anything about it because they can't discount flammable items. WD-40 Rust Soak is not flammable, you can check the MSDS for it.

Then I said "Ok well... now what" and he got even more frustrated and said he'd just ring the rest up and make up the difference. He rang up my light bulbs and it was 15$... Not even enough to make up the difference on the rust soak. So then he started angrily rubbing his forehead a second and said "Just... Just go swipe over there. I'll charge you 0.05$ this one time just go do it." I swiped, it came up 0.05$. Got my receipt and walked out. As I went out the alarm went off because the Rust-Soak wasn't even rung up. And I left with my bounty for 0.05$. It was not at all fun though and it felt very accusatory and unprofessional. I definitely want to get clarification from HD corporate on the whole situation, I'm just not sure if it would be better to do it through email or on the phone.

Here's the receipt:
46sCKvR.jpg

It wasn't a "real" unicorn deal though. It was a bizarro... borderline theft frustration unicorn deal.

It's the "please get out of my store, you lunatic, I have better things to do" deal.

But whatever, a score is a score, right? :)

You are correct - manager was wrong. Non-discountable items are fees and things that the price is set by the manufacturer. John Deere tractors for one. These items will have an indicator next to them on the receipt (don't remember what it is) and state on the receipt after all the items that the item is non-discountable.

My guess is it was non discountable because it has a 10$ rebate form on it. However since I don't have a receipt with the item on it I can't redeem the rebate anyhow.
