Funny you mention the hassle with penny items...spent part of my lunch doing a quick browse and grabbed some paslode nails +fuel boxes. I told myself that if they hassled me about them being penny then it wasn't worth my time to argue and they could have them back!

No questions asked, smooth sailing through SC even with one of the managers working the lines.

Also picked up one of the Husky workbench plastic organizers for 4.03.

Ironically I've had killer ebay results...

Ebay resellers get a lot of hate here, primarily from people who can't find the deals and like to blame others for their lack of success. Even though I have a lot of lack of success in finding the deals, I don't hold any ill will toward the resellers -- I figure that if some guy on the other side of the country is emptying the stores then that's not going to effect merchandise availability where I live. But I have no interest in being an ebay reseller, especially when the prices are depressed by everyone who is hunting the HD clearance items and looking for a quick flip. Doubling the investment on a quick flip works for some people, but given the time commitment it takes it doesn't seem to be worth the time for me since I'm not hurting for cash. I'm just hunting to find tools that I actually plan to use. Personally, I don't buy everything in sight with the plan to resell it, I just take what I need and move on. I also haven't knocked myself out looking for things that I have no use for just because they're cheap. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Walking all day long at Home Depot stores is a nice exercise. you do tens of thousands of steps breathing dusty air. it was fun for a couple days

I don't really bother looking for them either. I'm happy with the 75% off. Usually the 75% off takes enough time to find, nevermind looking for a needle in a haystack (or a unicorn in a Home Depot). I'll take a quick glance around the area for any penny items that are mentioned here, but I don't go crazy with it.

My last penny items were the Porter Cable nails, which I was shocked rang up a penny, since price check said 42 cents, and the Hitachi staples which I knew right away were a penny because Hitachi is non-existent in the stores around here.

Still some hitachi nails at tool rental. Most half off.The $62 grills are gone. I would like to know what they went for being old.

Guy's here's a tip on easy ways to make fast cash in the next few weeks...find out when dorm move-in day is at a college/university near you. Then just setup a table near the dorm, or sell stuff out the back of your truck. Easy sellers are AAA, AA, and C alkaline batteries. I got over 70 of those 48 pack Rayovac batteries for a penny each a few weeks ago. And about 30 of those Energizer 36 packs for also a penny. I already sold over half of them this past weekend for $10 each pack.

Dorm move-in days are occurring all over the country this month and even throughout September. So use your imagination on what these students will need for their dorms :). Easy money.

Week or two ago there was a debate about the Paslode Power Framer and not seeing it for sale anywhere but it was on the website. They just redid their website and droppped it. They added the new 21 degree nailer.

After some deep cover investigations, I unearthed some interesting practices. One of my local Home Depot managers is reserving lots of items until theny hit a penny, and then giving it to one guy in particular, He is allowed to go through SCO w/o hassle whatsoever, even though is he buying cart full of items at 1 cent each. This is the picture I took of him a few months ago. I finally spotted him again the other day and queried him on his practices.

So basically the manager is using that guy to get penny items for himself and probably giving the guy a tip for doing so...

According to my deep cover investigations, the guy in question sells the items to local pawn shops and at swap meets.

That's some shady stuff right there. I think most stores would consider that theft. I'm surprised the store isn't getting in trouble for selling the penny items.

He's worked out some sort of "deal" apparently... [emoji19] the cart he is using does not even look like a home depot one.

It depends on the individual store's overall volume and profits. One store I visited a few weeks back has a dedicated clearance shelf in the tool area with some items clearly marked at a penny

That manager would get fired if you went to corporate with that story and picture. I worked at Menards for years and something like that would get someone fired instantly.

I remember back when you originally posted this and often wondered what the real deal actually was. I suspected it was something similar to this, and I'd be surprised if it was an isolated case. I bet it goes on a lot more often than most people realize.

Ever walk through a flea-market or swap-meet in a bigger city? There's tables covered with brand new items that you know aren't acquired legitimately.

My favorite was in the big San Diego flea market, one guy was selling car emblems. Thousands of them. Wonder how he got them lol... I bet they didn't all come from the junkyard

Heard from one of the pro desk guys that a new clearance system is starting next week. It's going to start in millwork and flooring first. Didn't get many details, but he said its an automatic price drop system there should be a lot of deals. Take it for what it worth.

Wow just found two hitachi roofing nailers and more bostitch nailers.

I thought hitachi was long gone.

Hitachi nails were a penny in tool rental.

Yeah, I found some Hitachi nails in the tool rental area as well. I had to blow off the dust, that is how long the nails boxes where sitting in the shelves. I also found that most clearance items are saved in the back of the store so employee could buy them as per one employee.

Should be interesting. I hope the employees take a while to learn it so we can find all their slip-ups. I wonder how long it'll take to switch over all the stores..

I overheard two employees talking about the next inventory being done mid- Sept. That may be helpful to anyone near me.

In the past month my local store has gotten rid of 3 of the four clearance sections. The one in tools is the only one left now and it has a lot of returns and display models at 25% off, very little else.

If there is any truth to this, then you're talking about one very dumb manager. Or maybe this is just a fishing story.

Selling penny items creates an audit trail that documents poor inventory management on the part of store management. Smart store managers avoid the documentation -- by letting the penny items go for free so there is no audit trail. If store management were in collusion with Mr. Homeless Guy, they'd let the penny items go out the door without charging the penny -- to avoid creating the audit trail.

Tool rental was empty of hitachi nails. There was a box of hitachi nails on floor marked no home.Checked at sco scanned $4.82 each bought the box. Next store tool rental empty. The guy told me check pro desk. The cart was full of hitachi all marked a penny. I asked what they were going to do and they called someone and they marked out the bar codes and gave it to me.
