Bought one of these for a friend last month when they were $10. Figured I could use one too. For under eight bucks... WTH, right?

A employee was printing off dozens of .01 tags this morning on a cart, I looked at them all and it as nothing I needed, composite cables and video cables. He was replacing all the ones ending in .03 so if you need those things they are pennying out.

My store had 86 of those CD Tech cables the other day. they're penny now and there are none to be found. likely a store employee bought them all for a buck and he plans to ebay them.
Manager confirmed that employees are free to buy anything 24 hours after a price change.
He also said that he refuses to pull any inventory from upstairs for any customer. What a knob. I guess that explains what happens to all of clearance inventory that never makes it to the floor before it penny's out.

My store had these for 82.03 but none in stock.

Thought I would be slick and run to another store 20 miles away that showed 4 but were regular price. I bought one and tried to return and rebuy but manager shut me down because he said it was a store only clearance. At that point I got determined and found another store that showed 1 in stock so I called them and they were 82.03. When I got there they had 2 in stock. Score! Got both - one for a buddy. Just in time to throw down with some labor day BBQ. Now I need to return the $329 one and tell that manager to stick it in his ear

There's a couple guys that work the tool section at an HD near work, and every time I go in there now, they watch me like a hawk. I walk the tool aisles and they react really nervous when I eyeball the rafters. I think they know that I know killer deals really do exist and that I'm on the hunt for them. Other than the Bessy suction cup vises, I've never found a single good deal on clearance stuff in that store. I found out that both of them are only part-time employees, and I'm convinced they are only working there to scarf up the goods. Whenever I mention any deals on all the display stuff or discounts on the junk that's not really reduced in the clearance section, they both clam up.
At my local HD; different story. Those guys are really helpful and take good care of me.

Nice score. I have been trying for one of those for months but all the stores that actually have any in stock are still charging $329 full price.
Some employees are reading these post and they are learning. I heard it from an employee. I was able to get a trowel for a penny a few days ago, so I asked him directly about the penny sale. It is up to the cashier or manager discretion to ring them up. Employee are buying these penny deals now and reselling.

Six months ago, none of these items were on craigslist. Today, you can see what items have pennied out, and go directly to CL and find several of them all over the place.
Oh well, maybe if you can't beat 'em, you can join 'em...

Just seems a little unfair how we have to dig and scratch, spend hours of time to find these deals, and all they have to do is go to work, put on an apron and punch in.
Get paid to scarf up deals, and then make bank on selling them. Makes me curious to know how many employees in some stores are actually in on the racket.

And If I worked at HD for $10 I would be all over it also......as much as I wish they would set up a display that says "Penny Deals for GJ Members" I am afraid things are drying up at most HD's [emoji29]

In the grand scheme of it all, I'll bet it's not even barely a blip on their big picture radar.
A dozen or so guys on an internet forum are not creating massive losses for the company. Remember, these items would go in the dumpster or get donated, if we didn't get them. I'll bet the concern of where the items end up, stops at the store manager level. And the only reason they care, is because someone gets a report that the inventory wasn't properly managed.
Collateral damage. They expect it and budget for it at the corporate level, and the store manager just gets a reprimand of some sort. If it wasn't for him getting reprimanded, he wouldn't care either. They all have much bigger fist to fry, than worrying about this kind of stuff.
It's like saying cigarette smoke is destroying the ozone layer.
Here's the issue..... When an item goes through clearance process, the manufacturer takes the financial hit. When it hits a penny, and is sold through a POS Terminal, HD takes the financial hit. If it's marked out of inventory as either sent back or trashed, HD gets vendor credit.

Really? Just move on. It was fun while it lasted, but if you want to work for $10/hour, go right ahead...
Consider it as reparations for working an underpaid retail job.
I noticed this a lot in the last few months and most of the re-sellers in my area are trying to get the full retail price that the store couldn't get.

Everyone has perks with their jobs. I have access to industrial machinery, i get tons of free 5 gallon buckets, 55 gallon drums, and anything that goes in the scrap dumpster (parts washers that only need a pump, port a cool units that need a motor).
Let them have their perks. I may not find it right to just resell the items, but if they can use them, let them.

I think most would do it if they could.
ETA: I rarely wait for stuff to hit a penny. If the deal is good I buy. The one thing that is BS. If an employee hides stuff, waits for it to penny out that's BS. Should be fired if caught.

I have no problem with them getting items, but I do believe there is a grace period. There was when I worked there and it was a week. I saw someone else post it's now 24 hours.
I personally don't look for penny items really, other than more for curiosity. Obviously they're not meant to be sold. 75% off is for me
Oh, and you guys that think HD employees make $10/hour LOL They get paid pretty good actually. They paid me $12.50 part time while I was in college 20 years ago. Some of the full time guys were making $18-25 depending on experience. Managers were in the $60K range and store managers were 6 figures, again 20 years ago. I'd imagine it's much better now. Don't go feeling sorry for the employees. The benefits were also really good and I got free stock options as well back then.

Yeah, really. The employees have a discount program, that consumers do not. If an employee doesn't think that's an adequate benefit, then they should move on to another job. But maybe that's a contributing factor, as to why they're stuck in meager employment. Just like people who work at McDonald's bitching about not making enough money. Don't talk about it, move on and legitimately better themselves.
I'm not suggesting that employees can't take advantage of clearance items, but when the majority of that stuff never even becomes available to the consumer, then there's an issue with the system. Consumers purchase MUCH more goods, than the employees ever will. I've heard of grace periods that they cannot purchase, but if that stuff never finds it's way to the shelf, then they have a clear and distinct advantage over all of it's consumer-base, and I'm sure their upper management (above store level) would definitely frown on that.

My store had 2 meters and 2 clamps in stock. I grabbed a meter at $33. I actually needed another one for home, as my good one is at work.
Round Lake, IL store had 2 of the 48" ones on a table by the check out this afternoon. I think they were either $40.03 or $47.03. I've already got a 48" normal level and don't have a use for them so left them for the next guy.
There was one Husky 24" for 15.03, it's on a hook in my garage now.
