Some of them will change their mind when you tell them you are going to call corp.Depends on how crappy they want to be.

Had the same thing happen to me yesterday. Went to a store about 50 miles from home were I knew that they had three of the tool chests available (two on a shelf above my head - a little dangerous to get down, but then when you area after the elusive penny item, and one up in the rafters - which I had planned to leave behind as this store is not "corporate policy friendly". Scanned the item at SCO and it reflected the price as a penny. Before I could complete the sale (had swiped my gift card) the screen came up with the "See Attendant" message. Attendant told me that she could not sell the item to me for a penny and she was calling for someone to bring her a generic SKU so that she could sell it to me for the last clearance price ($25.03 - I have already purchased two other chests from another store at this price). Told her to call the manager instead. Two individuals from the tool area came over (neither of which were a manager) and told me that they could not sell the item to me for a penny. Told them that what they were doing was against corporate policy, but all they could do was make excuses.

Finally the manager came over and right from the start he told me he could not sell me the tool chest for a penny. He told me that it was against company policy, but he would sell it to me for the last clearance price. Told him that I was familiar with the corporate policy and that they were required to sell penny items for a penny if found by a customer. He tried to take an attitude and asked "if I worked for HD?" to which I responded, no, but I was knowledgeable abou their corporate policy and have previous contact with Customer Care (I have three names, phone numbers and two case numbers that I carry with me on the list of items I am looking for). After my response, I further advised the manager that I was not being a "jerk" that there were two other tool chests available, and that I was only trying to buy the one (planned on two, but one is better than nothing). With that he turned around and told the Attendant to sell it to me for a penny. No apologies, no further issue, etc. Bought the tool chest and watched as the folks in the tool section scrambled to get the other two boxes out of sight.

I have been successful in getting Customer Care to help, but I have also noted a reluctance on their part to really fight for the customer when it comes to the corporate policy. Also finding more and more stores who refuse to abide by the policy which means that it will be harder to get the large penny items in the future. Just my thoughts but with the recent inventory, clean-up and change in attitude it might just become harder to find the elusive penny buys.....

Has anyone ever seen any hammers or axes go on clearance or go to a penny? I want to buy some, but if they don't go on sale there I'll just get them somewhere else

Couple years ago there were a bunch, I got 20 or so Vaugn hammers & hatchets for .01, but not that was when they were changing brands so I would say buy them somewhere else

one problem with those, especially the 2013 ones, is they might have dropped out of the system completely, meaning not even penny status. give it a try though. manager could say "happy birthday"

If you want to find out whether it's dropped out of their system already or rings up a penny before you have someone pull the box down from the rafters, ask one of the cashiers to pull up the SKU on their register. You can see for yourself what comes up on their screen and most of the cashiers won't think twice about it. When you see the price just shrug it off to the cashier and walk away.

if it displays a penny it's better to give cashier some other regular price SKU right away, so she forgets the penny SKU

Same experience here lately. I don't understand why they say they can't sell penny items but I've seen photos of items on this site with the yellow price stickers on them that say 1 penny, and I have one yellow penny sticker along with receipt as proof as every time i go out hunting at HD

You know, someday it would be awesome to just be given a couple hours in a Home Depot store to rummage through all of their overhead stock.

Imagine the stuff we could find, even if I did have to pay "last sale price", it sure would be a fun time just to see whats really up there.

I don't get this...couple days ago there were 2 in stock for 396.06 with 4 on order (couldn't find the 2 that were supposed to be in stock).

Today there are 6 in stock at 132.03 but none any where in the store. Walked each and every isle.

Maybe they are in receiving and the price will go up once they are moved out to the floor?? Makes no sense to me :dunno:

Maybe employees stashed them waiting for the price to drop to a penny in next 3 weeks?

At least next time they won't give you **** when it rings up as a penny lol

They refunded the whole amount, I guess they did not want there store showing they sold it for a penny.

Mine are showing 498 in Maryland. Why such a price difference?! How do I get it for this price? Am I able to order it from the store that has it on sale or will HD price match another store?

Does anyone remember if the push lawn mowers ever go .03 status? I've been keeping track of the "clearance" prices for the last 6 weeks but they've stayed at the .00 status. :dunno:

I never even watch the .00 clearance i feel like they never drop.. I did notice that the smoker dropped from 200.00 to 156.00 today.

Most of the openers I found were the 3/4HP mixed in with the replacement model. The boxes are very similar (if not identical) and the model number is so not obvious that its hard to tell right away.

So if you are in a store looking at the 3/4HP models, be sure to look at every single box there just to be sure. And FWIW all of the stores I found them at did actually have an accurate inventory count in their store PC. But the price on shelf was still full price because the sticker there was for the new model.

They 100' garden hoses are also down to a penny as well. Saw a penny tag for them when I was in store last weekend.

I picked up some twist lock electric plugs for $5.00 instead of $40. 00. They were marked down to $10 but were in a$5.00 basket. It took about ten minutes for them to fix it. No door openers around here.
