You know the GJ custom of when someone posts a really cool tool score... everyone chimes in and says "you ****"? Well, I think most of you in this Home Depot Deal thread ****.
Inspired by those Corona garden shears for a penny, I went to my HD yesterday and found only Fiskars brand, for over $12. While in the garden department, I looked at the backpack blowers that SPN1025 is picking up for a penny. $329.00. The penny Echo chainsaw? $299. The anti-fatigue mat? Full price.
I even took the advice offered in the thread, put on my reading glasses, and scrutinized the DATES of random yellow clearance tagged items found scattered and tucked in places where they did not appear to normally belong.
One such item was a Bosch rotating laser level, cleared out because HD changed vendors to DeWalt. I had experience with this type of vendor change on this particular genre of items in the past. A long time ago, HD carried RoboToolz laser levels. They cleared out all of RoboToolz to switch to the Porter Cable branded version of the exact same tools. Then they cleared all the Porter Cable versions because they signed a deal with CST Berger to carry their (inarguably superior) brand of laser levels and tripods. They only devote a maximum of 8 feet of peg space to merchandise surveying and laser leveling equipment, so one brand always ends up displacing another. Eventually, the CST Berger contract must have ended, and that stuff all got cleared out to make way for Bosch.
And now, in yet another repeat threepeat of musical brand changes, most noticeably during the past two weeks or so, all the Bosch laser levels and tripods are being booted to the clearance aisles, as the new Dewalt brand of laser levels has taken over the 8 foot of space in the tool corral. Deal hunters... you might keep this in mind if you need a laser level.
Now, back to my visit yesterday at HD...
I see the DATE on the yellow clearance tag of the discontinued item Bosch box that says 08/01/15. Wait... AUGUST? That's 4 months ago. That is longer than the 90 days that a poster on GJ stated was the cutoff where unsold clearance items can fall to a penny. This was the last one left. It looked lonely there all by itself, like it didn't belong tucked between piles of "special buys" also being cleared out from Christmas. Like it was forgotten. Like it was a ripe for that deep, deep, get-it-outta-here one penny discount and only needed to be scanned to find out...
There are no independent self scanning kiosks at my HD, so I found an employee with a hand held scanner, and asked him to scan the 4 month old yellow tag affixed directly to the Bosch box... drum roll please....
It was exactly what the tag said it was, discounted from the original $499.99 to $374.99. Not a penny less. And certainly not a penny. The employee who scanned it for me wondered why I couldn't read. In his mind, he was probably wondering "is this customer as dumb as he looks?"
And to that, I must sadly answer... Yes. I am.
I am dumbfounded how some of you GJ guys get these deals. I read this thread with jealousy... not for the tools you guys get, nor for the low prices (practically free) that you get them... no... I'm jealous of your
cleverness. I feel pretty dumb by comparison, an even with the benefit of your tutelage, it is quite obvious that the only way I'll every enjoy a penny deal is with dumb luck. And that's not gonna happen in the time remaining this year.
