What a steal. I have property down in LaMarque and usually frequent the HD right off of 45 by The Gun Room. Not sure of the area but I think it's exit 21 or 22 off of 45.

Yeah that home depot is about 5 mins from my house. That store usually has better inventory control than others around the area but I find deals/penny deals around their from time to time.

Saw a shopping cart full of WD40 getting pushed to the back of a store yesterday. I'm guessing these are the infamous penny cans. At the same store I also saw Echo chain saw boxes up in the rafters labeled "DNI" and none on display.

Also, what does it mean when a price tag has a date in the future? Saw a discounted storage bin that had "R 1/26/16" as the date. Does this mean that it is to be removed after that date?

Been looking at the Dewalt DW745 table saw at $229, and most stores around me were down to 2 or fewer units, but this morning I see that most are stocked back up to at least 5 units per store. All stores I checked had them as inactive, so I didn't think they'd be getting any more. Harbor Freight is only 5 minutes from one store, so I might try my luck with a 20% off coupon.

I'll also do my first search for penny items.
My closest store had it at $299 still, but another had a NLP sticker at $229. They even took my wrinkled, black and white printed 20% off HF coupon without blinking!

No time for penny deal searches, besides I couldn't find a kiosk.

I finally found a penny chainsaw, but it was the 10" Ryobi 18v Cordless. At least it was brand new in box.

Still on the hunt for an Echo.

Not a penny but HD is having some sale on reconditioned items. Saw 2 18" echo chainsaws (1 yr warranty) for $125 each

You know the GJ custom of when someone posts a really cool tool score... everyone chimes in and says "you ****"? Well, I think most of you in this Home Depot Deal thread ****. :)

Inspired by those Corona garden shears for a penny, I went to my HD yesterday and found only Fiskars brand, for over $12. While in the garden department, I looked at the backpack blowers that SPN1025 is picking up for a penny. $329.00. The penny Echo chainsaw? $299. The anti-fatigue mat? Full price.

I even took the advice offered in the thread, put on my reading glasses, and scrutinized the DATES of random yellow clearance tagged items found scattered and tucked in places where they did not appear to normally belong.

One such item was a Bosch rotating laser level, cleared out because HD changed vendors to DeWalt. I had experience with this type of vendor change on this particular genre of items in the past. A long time ago, HD carried RoboToolz laser levels. They cleared out all of RoboToolz to switch to the Porter Cable branded version of the exact same tools. Then they cleared all the Porter Cable versions because they signed a deal with CST Berger to carry their (inarguably superior) brand of laser levels and tripods. They only devote a maximum of 8 feet of peg space to merchandise surveying and laser leveling equipment, so one brand always ends up displacing another. Eventually, the CST Berger contract must have ended, and that stuff all got cleared out to make way for Bosch.

And now, in yet another repeat threepeat of musical brand changes, most noticeably during the past two weeks or so, all the Bosch laser levels and tripods are being booted to the clearance aisles, as the new Dewalt brand of laser levels has taken over the 8 foot of space in the tool corral. Deal hunters... you might keep this in mind if you need a laser level.

Now, back to my visit yesterday at HD...

I see the DATE on the yellow clearance tag of the discontinued item Bosch box that says 08/01/15. Wait... AUGUST? That's 4 months ago. That is longer than the 90 days that a poster on GJ stated was the cutoff where unsold clearance items can fall to a penny. This was the last one left. It looked lonely there all by itself, like it didn't belong tucked between piles of "special buys" also being cleared out from Christmas. Like it was forgotten. Like it was a ripe for that deep, deep, get-it-outta-here one penny discount and only needed to be scanned to find out...

There are no independent self scanning kiosks at my HD, so I found an employee with a hand held scanner, and asked him to scan the 4 month old yellow tag affixed directly to the Bosch box... drum roll please....

It was exactly what the tag said it was, discounted from the original $499.99 to $374.99. Not a penny less. And certainly not a penny. The employee who scanned it for me wondered why I couldn't read. In his mind, he was probably wondering "is this customer as dumb as he looks?"

And to that, I must sadly answer... Yes. I am.

I am dumbfounded how some of you GJ guys get these deals. I read this thread with jealousy... not for the tools you guys get, nor for the low prices (practically free) that you get them... no... I'm jealous of your cleverness. I feel pretty dumb by comparison, an even with the benefit of your tutelage, it is quite obvious that the only way I'll every enjoy a penny deal is with dumb luck. And that's not gonna happen in the time remaining this year.

You could have saved yourself the embarrassment and looked up the SKU in the price check app.

The 3 or 4 month thing is only good for items that goo .00, .06, .03, penny. A lot of the power tools have multiple drops prior to .06, .03. It may take twice or even three times as long for it to drop to a penny.

I didn't know there was such a thing. Just now, after reading your message, I googled "home depot price check app". Thanks for the tip.

It's not the phone app, its an "app" on the in store computers.

Went back to where there was a 40v ryobi string trimmer after reading that someone got it for $.01, sticker still $40 but the trimmer is nowhere to be found.

Another hd that I never find clearance at had the echo chainsaws but full price $350 or something.

And neither had enough landscape lighting to do anything worthwhile with.

And all stores near me only stocked fiskars gardening tools.

Oh well

If anyone is planning to flip their Echo CS-490 on ebay or craigslist and might be interested in making a deal with a beginning farmer and fellow forum member, please let me know. I have had my eye on this particular saw as it seemed to meet my needs for the farm very well, just been waiting a bit to see if Echo would put it on sale.

I visited 2 local HDs today and used the price check app on their kiosks but could find no chainsaws on any level of clearance pricing in the area. So perhaps the market is stronger here (in PA) for them so they aren't marking them down. If everyone is using their new saws or would rather sell it another way, no big deal. Just figured it was worth mentioning. Thanks.

I'm beginning to believe that in PA, or at least southeast, they're pretty good with inventory. I've hit philly stores, suburbs and south jersey. I got lucky and found a pressure washer and a dyson on major clearance. The only penny found was Brita bottles left on the clearance shelf.

50% of the stores around here carry the CS490 and the rest show out of stock. I'm hawkeyeing the ones with stock but I find that price drops definitely do not follow our northern friends.

So just keep in mind that there's a bit of luck and a lot of time required. Home Depot isn't leaving them out there on purpose...

Never fails...I had an actual penny in my pocket and of course I couldnt find any penny items at my local store.

When I DONT have a penny is when I find them and I end up charging them on my credit card :)

A Tale of Two Cities......

It is funny how different stores react to the "penny situation." Went shopping yesterday, visiting 5 stores in my local area (within about 50 miles from home). Didn't find anything extraordinary, but did find several penny deals, as well as two Husky Organizers ($3.83) and a Husky Technician Box ($8.83). At one store, I found the pictured Animal Trap that had a .01 yellow clearance tag attached to it. Knew that the traps were on clearance for a penny as I had bought 5 others from the same store about three weeks earlier (have a total of 8 now - all to be donated to our local Humane Society). Left the one remaining trap as it was located too high for me to reach even with the yellow ladder. Since the last time, someone there was nice enough to mark it with the yellow clearance sticker and move it down on one of the easily reached shelves. Took the trap, the Technician's box and one of the organizers up to the SCO to check-out. Attendant was there - store was fairly quiet - and watched as I checked out. He came over after I scanned the trap and congratulated me on getting a penny deal and showed me the yellow sticker. No argument about not being able to sell the item, no argument about the item being recalled or defective, etc. And this is from a store where I have been stopped before over penny items (6 drawer tool box, elevated garden boxes, bug spray, etc.). Not sure if the store is changing its tune, or if some of the employees just don't feel like fighting the fight anymore. All I know is that it was a great feeling not to have to get defensive over a penny deal....

Move the clock ahead an hour and I am at my last store visit for the day (had to get home in time to meet my daughter her daycare). Didn't find anything at the store, but took my normal route through the garden tool area to check out the chainsaws, blowers, etc. As I entered the area I noticed a display box with over 65 cans of WD40 with the metal straw. Took one carton from the display (each carton hold 24 cans) and went to the SCO. Scanned all of the cans (found out that I had 25) without issue and took them to my vehicle. Went back in and grabbed another carton (leaving approximately 15 cans behind) and went back to the SCO. Now it should be noted that this is one of the stores that I have bought many penny items from before, and most times there is no issue (bought a Husky Impact Wrench, 2 78" levels, a Ryobi Loper, etc.) or very little problem getting an item for a penny (sometimes just a call to the MOD, or a quick discussion with them and they let it go - no arguments or threats to call Corporate). When I approached the SCO a new attendant was on duty - the other lady who saw me previously check out with the WD40 was on break. She asked if she could help but I told her I could manage. She made a comment about me needing to scan each can, but left me to my own devices. Got all 24 cans scanned and my credit card entered when the screen froze. Attendant told me that she could not sell me the WD40 for a penny as the cans had been "recalled". Told her the cans had not been recalled but had been discontinued and that they were being clearanced, and the current clearance price was a penny. She said she couldn't sell them regardless. Asked her to call the MOD. She called and said that he would not sell them for a penny, but would sell them for a dollar each. Told her I would not pay that price and stated that it appeared that they were not following corporate policy regarding penny items. She called the MOD again, and stated that he told her I could pay a dollar or leave them behind. Asked her to have him come to the SCO to discuss. When he arrived he made it a point to tell me that he was the manager and that corporate policy forbade them from selling penny items and that he was not going to sell me the WD40 (real blowhard who tried his meanest expression when he talked with me). Given that I had to get home to meet my daughter I decided not to argue with him. However, I did tell him that I had completed the sale prior to his arrival and I wanted a copy of my receipt so that I could contact corporate. The attendant confirmed that I did complete my purchase but that she had voided my sale and refunded my 25 cents (unbeknowst to me). The look on the MOD face after she acknowledged the fact that I had completed the sale prior to his arrival was priceless. With the wind no longer in his sail, he told the Attendant that I could have the WD40 and told her he needed to talk with her - he was not happy and you could tell from the tone of the conversation she was not going to be either.

Again, seems that each store works penny items differently and that employees are stuck in the middle. I am happy to get the WD40 (now have 51 cans as I found 2 other cans at others stores for a penny - and checked those out without issue) but wish the stores would be consistent on their policies regarding penny items as I have bought penny items from each of the above stores – most times with the full knowledge of the Attendants – and you never know what to expect.

Spn is truly amazing getting all the deals, but it very much depends on your local HD. My HD does not believe in anyone actually getting any penny deals, or any good deals at all for that matter! Clearance usually means $1 off full price for a good year, then maybe $2 off full price if it didn't sell yet for the next year out. You simply won't find any of these where I'm at. Now the in store computer app IS still useful because it will tell me what things are on sale for in one place, rather than going up and down aisles to look and see, which will certainly result in things missed. So I am starting to use it. But the chance of finding an actual penny deal in my store is about zero. Oh and refurbished deals? Forget it. Refurbished means it has a special sticker on it that is about $5 off full new price, which is beaten handily by any sort of sale on a normal full price item, so don't even bother! This may well be the case for many others too. I want to live where Spin lives! - Paul

The last couple of times at mine I couldn't even get them to match the Lowe's 10% off. I haven't gotten one of these deals in a long time. It's pretty rare I go there anymore. Menard's is first choice then Lowe's.

Nice haul grizzlyjmg,
I have not seen the AGM batteries being clearanced.

Sorry for the confusion, the AGM batteries are not being clearanced. They are the old batteries from my daughters electric wheel chair (you can see it in the background of one of the pictures). Set up my purchases next to same not knowing they would be in the pictures......

X2. Im not as religious and determined as spn and gmc, and it ***** that my local HD (York PA) doesn't have customer use computers, but I'll still search for sku's posted here and never find them, or they've already been replaced. I'll search everywhere, high and low, and every once in a while I'll get excited because I think I found something in the upper levels, but it's not the right sku. I'll have to check out the other HD in Mechanicsburg, I know they have customer computers.

Got 5 of the hoses plus the Temp2o. First time I've seen a penny tag.

Lucky you, I've looked high & low for WD40 at the $2 price with none to be found

I had a similar situation as grizzlyjmg.

I was at a store that I have found a few penny items before and today I found 3 of the 8 ZONE X-CORE CONTROLLER HUNTER sku 421915 only select stores have this clearanced and they are already going penny status. I proceeded to scan them and the attendant stopped the transaction so I hit the back button (I didn't even know you could circumvent the 'See Attendant' message but it worked) and I scanned all 3, paid, got my receipt, and bagged all 3. Then the attendant walks over and grabs my receipt and says that they cant sell the items. I politely asked for my receipt back and said I had already paid and that the items were mine.

He then grabs the bags and I asked him to call the MOD (thinking he would be reasonable) I was wrong. He reiterated what the attendant had said then he scans one of the items and says that it is recalled we cant them. I countered with what i had told the attendant about having paid and having a receipt. He reached out for the receipt and I didn't let him grab it because at this point I could see that I should have just left with the items before they had possession of them.

I then asked him about corporate policy and he said he cant sell it its recalled. I asked so if I call corporate right now they would side with you, he said yes of course. I told him to not take the items anywhere and that I was going to call corporate. He said ok with this $hit eating grin on is face. Little did I know that corporate was closed today. I then asked if he would hold the items until I could call, he said no because that cant sell them. At this point he sounded like a broken record.

I then stated that the item had been clearanced and that there was still a tag and they were on the shelf and I asked how could they be recalled. He then says well I dont know if they are recalled or not but we still cant sell them. So short of calling the police to report a theft of 3 penny items (which would have probably been very entertaining) I left because there was no reasoning with him, but before I could the smug SOB asked if I wanted my 3 cents returned I told him no because I would be contacting corporate.

Dad has been wanting that for well over a year. He got a lot of the Ryobi stuff when they started marking it down and we both have been watching that item but it's been marked $99.00 since probably fall of 2014. Looked about a week ago and was still $99, might have to stop again tomorrow and see if it's cheaper/that store has any deals.

We bought this for $575 plus tax. Been looking for another garage box for awhile, came with some sockets and stuff in it too, they marked it to $575 after speaking with a manger about the small dent in front.

So is there a way to find what stores actually have the dewalt toolbox in stock?

I went to my local store and they had none and the cashier checked the computer and said there were zero in our district.

However these are on the website and say they are online only but none are available to order. I find it hard to believe there are none to be found.

I think every store I've been in (~10) since early December has had at least 5 of these in stock. One store yesterday had 15 or so.

The last couple of times at mine I couldn't even get them to match the Lowe's 10% off. I haven't gotten one of these deals in a long time. It's pretty rare I go there anymore. Menard's is first choice then Lowe's.

Yeah, I like Menards best by far, even if they don't have penny deals. Their deals are good without all the HD hassle. Where I am, Lowes is super expensive, so I really only get stuff there if on massive sale or clearance, but at least with Lowes, when on clearance, that is the price, and it is a known thing. HD is just annoying! - Paul

Try the appliance dept. They usually have a free computer.
