Was doing a price checks around store when low and behold their are three gladiator tool chest sitting in tool area. I thought to myself where did those come from? Went to public computer sure enough "no item found". Go find a flat cart about scanner level and lift those babies on, line up sku numbers for easy, fast scanning and head to my local sco. Very helpful [emoji30] young attendant offers to scan these heavy boxes comes up "no sku on file". Dang it says I and proceed to wait for MOD "Grace" to come assist me. Grace tries every number on boxes and nothing will come up! Then MOD Grace says " we know what you do, finding penny and clearance items. These were a special order and should not have been on the floor. We will sale them to you for 25% off what it cost us to ship them here." I said " well if you know what I do then you know you will not find them on the computer nor do you sale them in the store." She said " yes but because it was a special order for someone we know what it cost us". She said " we will not get anything off top shelves for you that are pennies.! I said thanks I would like to think on it. She proceeds to ask how I know what items are pennies and I said "you really don't know?" (Nor was I going to show and tell). I ask her am I doing anything that is wrong or illegal? If I am then I will stop! "No " she said but we know! I decided against them but grabbed a fold up ice chest sitting around corner of sco and ring out at a penny as she is not looking.
Talked to friend who works at hd and ask him to research true corporate policy on top shelve he returned my call with" top shelf is on floor merchandise and anything there is for sale and must be retrieved if customer wants to purchase, even if a penny." he told me if there was problems to call corporate and it would be resolved.
She was right on special orders though.
So I am a marked man but can freely search for penny items and purchase without lurking in the shadows [emoji1][emoji1]

I would take what your buddy said with a grain of salt..this just varies wildly by store. One instance you here from corporate saying you're right, then next they side with manager. Even using the computers at some stores is frowned on. Ideally we need a corporate wide memo sent eplaining all thus to the stores...Yeah I know, dreaming right.

I do agree about the lurking though..if not illegal then I don't care what you think of me scanning your rafters..

hmm I've been told by customer service AND executive support that the rafters are NOT part of the sales floor.

am I reading that wrong? That can't be a big number. I would have asked what it was. Might have been a good deal still.

All comments well taken. I do understand that there have been many different situations at different stores. I asked if he could get the written policy (if there is one) so will see where it goes. I have talked with customer care and have been told yes sales floor is all then another up to manager thus the phone call to him asking for more info if possible without bringing too much attention to it. I know the store he works at, all is on floor so hope they miss a few things.
I am not just penny hunting. If I want it and am going to use it then 25%- 75% is a great blessing and I spend my dollars but on items I do not want or need then I will wait and see if no one else buys at discount and goes penny then I will help inventory out by getting it. [emoji12]

For all three $414
Don't need them so not wanting to pony up $414 for those just to have them

Yes I watched her find the order form on computer from whom ever ordered and returned them. Watched her take 25% off that. $414 with sales tax in there.

What about the first shelf that's just out of reach? Because I had an ASM tell me anything kept over 8' high is not considered the sales floor. But if I found anything lower it was fair game :dunno:

I would make the argument that the yellow ladder allows you access to that area.

I'm pretty sure the employees/managers just make up their own rules as they go, depending on the day, their mood, etc...

This part is true. But so is the rafters not being considered part of the sales floor. Now in my eyes that would mean anything I can't reach with the yellow ladder on the very top racks. Corporate my have a different definition of where the over head starts but they're gonna say they can't sell penny items out of the over head.

...

While hitting up a bunch of stores earlier this week during the workday, I saw a ton of customers walking around with fancy looking clipboards and calculators. I managed to find one that looked similar (complete with an attached broken calculator) at my house and decided to bring it with me today.

It worked like a charm! I did not receive any resistance when asking to use a computer at any of the 4 stores I went to (even from retirees). When they would ask what I needed, I'd just hold that clipboard up and say said I needed to look up a bunch of items.

Still had several suspicious employees creeping around trying to see what I was up to. Whenever I'd see them hovering in my peripheral, I'd just mash some buttons on the broken calculator, scribble some stuff down, shake my head and sigh. I did not have any linger after that, so I assume this combination was enough to satisfy them that I was not jacking credit card numbers, trying to crash their system or whatever else they think I'm doing.

Great first post ! I will have to get a clipboard calculator so I can mash buttons when employees start hovering.

This is no secrete, and works in most places. Play the part and you will blend in. I work for a special events company and we always joke about this. If you carry a clip board and wear a safety vest you can get into any special event without a ticket or credentials.

I just don't see how you guys are running into so much trouble with HD employee's. You must be some shady looking people.

If that is policy then I will abide it.

Yeah stuff out of the over head you have to try your damnedest to get them down and through SCO without being noticed. Obviously the heavy stuff like that almost ain't gonna happen unless everything lines up. Next time with something like that tell them you want down whatever is next to the thing out actually want down. Then once they show up be like oh no I actually want those gladiators down.

I have also been told different stories on what their penny policy actually is. One lady told me they couldn't honor the sales price. One said they could sell me on the items I had found. Then another said that I could purchase all of the items for a penny.

I think it's funny. If I worked at Home Depot I would laugh.

The over head was a separate comment. I imagine because of the 8 husky bags from a couple of days ago that the employees got down for me and had three of them scan them and sale to me (see previous post)[emoji5][emoji5]

She laughed and said you can't buy it but you can have them!!! She scribbled upc and i was on my way. Not looking for them, but fell in my lap so to speak.

has anyone compared the dirt devil steamvac to the hoover steam vac?
dirtdevil seems to seperate and you can use it on more than just the floor. i dunno if the hoover does that or not, but im leaning towards not..

Yeah.. I also got the famous sku not found or whatever on 2 gdo. mod even tried on HD pc to get last clearance price.. She was not able to because it was not found on pc about the item.. She looked up on HD Web and tried to charge me that price... Said no thanks... She told me she could have worked with with me on price if I got it off the sales floor, but since I hot it off low shelf with yellow ladder.. Nothing. She told me it's clearance item, pennies out and after that, or in months sku hoes off the HD system. By regional

Called main store manager next day, and he said same thing.. But that if I can show proof of item sku, description and price, HD will honor last clearance price... I then checked another County or region,, sku is still alive in system and it's penny, they even gave me record of last clearance price..
Called the mod back and of course he saids can't find item.. It must have been shipped rtv out. What I should have done at the time of the deal is call another HD store or next County over and see if sku comes up there, if so, then tell store to talk to other store to verify last price sale... Penny pretty hard..

I draw the line at wearing an orange shirt. I have found that wearing jeans and a collared polo style shirt works best. Being too young would not help, but I have that covered.

Yeah I get asked all the time at places if I work there, because I usually go out during my lunch break (so I have my business casual clothing on)

Never been asked if I work at HD when Im roaming around in jeans stained with paint, grease and blood :)

I just go in however, only every now and then I get bothered by someone. One of those real persistent bastards that just will not leave you alone. That's when I change the conversation from about "what I'm looking for" to something totally irrelevant, like how plastic is made. They pull back really quickly when they think I just want a friend.

I have gotten the same response from multiple corporate employees as well as managers that the "overhead" is not the sale floor.

What I don't have is a definition of where the "overhead" starts.

I accidentally wore a orange shirt under my jacket one day and had like 8 people come up to me while on the computer asking for help. The lady behind the pro counter where I was sitting just laughed and said it was my fault for wearing the shirt haha.
