finish the story... did you give him the $5 discount?

Yes I did, haha. I'm not a good real-time haggler and was taken off guard by this a$$hat. I said "Yea, whatever", took his money, gave him his saw then booted him off my property.

for local sales it is a good idea to meet at a police station or bank. Most police stations support it now, drop in and let them know what you are doing. And banks have good lighting and cameras (mention that) -

good luck and be safe -

If after talking to someone on the phone I was concerned enough that I thought I needed to do the meet at the police department, I would just end the deal and sell it to someone else. Being on video at a bank or near a PD isn't going to be a deterrent to a nutcase if they wanted to rob you or worse.

I'm not sure if it's the items I'll selling, the area or what but pretty much everyone I've dealt with has been a decent person. But I still do the deal at a public place so I have my privacy at home.

it's two sided.. there are a lot of people concerned with who they are meeting up with ... both sellers and buyers. So you also make it easier for the buyer to tell who they are dealing with. I almost never speak with these folks by phone (usually email and text) , and my wife sells the vast majority of my stuff. Our local police departments actually recommend it - that's where I got the idea. We have a state trooper who parks across the street so I don't worry but it is a really simple way to make the buyer comfortable as well as weeding out the ones you don't want.

Only downside is those buyers who used to slide in fast, pay quickly and be gone because they thought all your new merchandise was stolen get very confused.

Holy god this....... the number of times I've been asked is it stolen is unreal. Yep, late twenties white male, decently dressed, will only meet in public places in view of a camera means my stuff is stolen..... :dunno: My favorite question where did you get such a good deal cause I know your making money on this. OR Its on clearance at HD for *** but I can't find any, you better sell it to me at that price. :lol_hitti

Tell them you are not making any money, you buy at retail and sell for a loss as a public service.

Sold dozens of items and have the people come to the house. 95% of the time the people are nice as can be. Often spend 30 minutes shooting the **** about work, cars, etc. While I meet people places to sell sometimes, I've had too many people no-show me wasting my damn time. I rarely talk on the phone and converse via text.

Am I taking a gamble? Possibly but I don't have the time to **** around waiting for people in a parking lot.

am I the only one thinking that these nailer clearance is not going to net much $$$ as almost every store has a couple or some are not yet marked down....Seems like there is going to be a lot of supply and only limited buyers... because I know ebay/paypal fees **** which would leave you with lunch money in your pocket...with the threat of ebay/paypal scammers and the dreaded credit card chargebacks...

local sales dries up as not too many big spenders around....all the interest seems to be low ballers or worse..

And the worst is these clearance price don't go down the penny pricing method...
so that would mean...sit on these or return later but cash will be ******* for some time as lowballers are plenty..

yeah...thats a ticking time bomb... I have done house only for compressor buys because they need to test, power up....but otherwise.. I meet at local Mcdonalds 5mins from me... I tell them text, or email back when there...then I drive down...no show...come back...not much time lost...or effort..
and also during my return home from work...I will meet them after work on route at public place... And I don't meet them after dark...

and even when deal requires a home test... I give them local meet place first..then I meet them there...then they follow me home to test product and buy.... too bad... I can't find a place where they provide power and water to test stuff out for buyers... and I don't want no generator hauling..

But my best buyers have been repeat buyer from construction guys..all kinds of trade guys..

I feel you, but a chance some think worth taking..Hope nobody gets their *** handed to them!!

And because all I sell is new stuff, they wonder how I do it,and is it stolen:lol:. When I ask does it matter, they usually quickly reply ,"HELL NO" and we finish the deal!

Honda, just can't let anybody come to the house..NO exceptions. Even compressors and such, you got to take a chance on me..Maybe not totally fair, but if not then they can find a deal like me..Was going to suggest a generator to you as I was reading your response, but I see you don't want to do that at all..Having a pick up truck doing this is huge!!! Don't know how the hell I made it thru 20 yrs as a mason without a pickup,LOL.

Have any other Craigslist resellers seen an increase in the number replies from scammers? I've been getting at least two or three texts from scammers as soon as I post a new listing or renew one of my old ones. All of them follow this same format:

I've replied the exact same way to 6 or 7, but so far, no one seems interested in helping out a Nigerian prince who's in a tight spot...

Well just got word that there might be a big change coming later this year for us. Home Depot sent out memo to district managers informing them they are researching the validity of clearance items having no return policy. This blows, but like some of us said it is only a matter of time before they tighten things up with so many people doing this.

Actually surprised HD has not tightened up the reins in a LOT of areas that allow us to do this. I've returned 1 item so far that wasn't going to sell. Not a big deal to me at all:dunno:. As long as you buy REAL wisely, you'll be ok.. Newbies reading 2 pages and jumping into this like madmen will have what SPN suggested done to them,OUCH!

I agree completely. I'm one of the odd shoppers that almost exclusively buys for myself and not for resale. It's not worth the time and energy to deal with any of this for me. With that said, if there is some clearance item glaring right in front of me, I will get it and give to friend/family. Just relaying information that was passed down to me from family friend.

They need to tighten up their returns period. On all items. Twice been burned burned by people buying items, either swapping it out with something else, or taking what they need (bath fan grill), then taping it back up. Now I check everything in store if it looks opened. One coil nailer was def. used and returned. They even put the thread plug back in. Which when removed showed teflon tape. Not to mention being beat up in general. Then found a faucet that had the straps missing. Yeap, no drain connection. Its almost like Walmart or Costco really. Except they put it right back on the shelf. Even been opening the M12 kits to make sure everythings ok.

Check out some local public schools, some in my area have power outlets on the outside of the building. No one would bug you using the power outlet for a few minutes when school is not in session.

Me too, probably hundreds....
I've had some pretty gangster dudes show up a few times, and they pay cash without any dicking around renegotiating BS. If I had little girls sunbathing in the yard I might feel different.

I don't buy anything that I may flip that I cannot dump at what I bought it for quickly if needed. Anyone needing to return clearance items often is buying at way too high a price and/or buying things with little demand.

They should keep the current policy with the exception of maybe limiting returns for people who do a ton of returns in comparison with the amount they buy. Or limit clearance returns to a month rather than 3

Was just told other day it's 30 days for clearance returns. You shouldn't get a different answer from every store. And you're absolutely right about buying wrong stuff if you return that much.

I was just told 30 days for clearance items as well. Seems fair if that's the policy.

I actually think buyers get excited about the fact that items might be hot. I usually leave it up to their imagination as to where i got the item. Most of the time i just say "you don't wanna know!"

Knipex down to .04 level. My local stores have the nailers but they are still $200+. The ones that don't have them are marked down like the rest. All the 2 ton jacks and husky lights are gone around me too. :(

I try to always meet up at one as well, although sometimes I'll get a message from the buyer saying they're parked across the street. Whenever I get there, they always say they have an expired inspection sticker, suspended license from a DWI or some other BS.

So far I've only had one meet up that was super uncomfortable/sketchy. Scheduled a meet up in the parking lot of a Home Depot and when I arrived, the buyer and his ol' lady were having a huge fight. They were super trashy and the whole scene looked like something you'd see on an episode of cops.

They were in separate vehicles, but the guy had a buddy with him who looked over at me and we both exchanged looks that said, "I'm extremely uncomfortable right now and don't really know wtf to do." This went on for about 5 minutes and ended with her speeding off. As she drove off, he jumped out of the truck and yelled "Don't you drive away from me you f'ing *****!"

Paid full price with no haggling or even looking at the item, so I ended up giving him 4 stars on OfferUp.

I wasn't even aware it was 30, like I said, I never buy anything I can't break even on. Thanks for letting me know of the 30 days. That seems plenty fair.

I think those dewallt nailers were posted on slickdeals this morning so they may start to disappear.

Has anyone return a penny/clearance item without a receipt to find out they are refunding you the original full price?

Also how many times can you returns items at HD before HD catches on and puts a stop to your returning items? I guess I'm asking do they track your name and # times you returned an item?

If you bought it for a penny, it's in the system as a penny and that's what you'll get if you try to return it. So don't. Even if it's a bolt you paid a penny for, throw it out if you don't want it, give it away, put it on your mantle and call it art, whatever but don't try to bring it back and think you'll get original price.

Many stores, not just HD, pay attention to customer returns and if you return too many things they will black list you for 3 months, 6 months or whatever. You become a costly nuisance that they don't want to deal with.

If you are returning that many things, you are making poor choices.

HD return without receipts trigger HD LP department a big RED FLAG...on radar video..

you know HD loss prevention has video tape of every return customer without receipt .all it takes a a software facial recognition to match and bingo.....Jail time... and yes...there's camera everywhere in there.... some people who are buying penny items legitimately are being hasssled by HD security....
