Home Depot doesn't stock a #4 Phillips

Customer comes in needing 4 bolts to mount his TV onto a TV mount. Owner's manual recommended a size M8-1.25mm x 43 to 45mm long. I opened the drawer containing all the special M8 metric screws. These were some real nice stainless steel pan head machine screws with a #4 Phillips drive.

My point is this: I find it embarrassing when I can't offer the customer what he needs. Especially something simple like a screwdriver or screwdriver bit. Yes I know that a #4 Phillips screwdriver is not going to fly off the shelves, but if you stock the screws, you should stock the correct size screwdriver to go with it.

Yes I'm sure it was a #4. All the M8 screws at #4 Phillips and all the M6 screws had #3 Phillips. I made sure by taking the two screws over to the tool section to see which screw would fit a #3 Phillips. The M6 fit the #3 Husky screwdriver like a glove.

I really can't think of a store that I would could walk into and expect to find a #4 phillips. Sadly Harbor Freight is probably the most likely. Perhaps Sears (10 or 15 years ago anyway) but I wouldn't be too hopeful today.

I've run into this before, too. The screws holding the apron on a 12-inch Atlas lathe are fillister head with a P4. I bought some SK Phillips bit sockets in order to get a P4. Later, I bought a Chapman bit driver set and that included a P4. I believe there's also a P4 in the Proto Duratek screwdriver set that I got on sale at Zoro.

Try to find a Pozidriv screwdriver at HD. Yeah, I know they don’t sell PH4. Probably because they don’t sell any fasteners that are PH4.

I still see screws with Phillips #4 heads fairly often (on old boats) and have a few drivers for them. Phillips #4 used to be found in any 'complete' US Craftsman screwdriver set - I don't know if that is still true.

But, the screwdrivers I'm most careful not to lose are ones for simple slotted screws with heads larger than 3/8" wide. Not much modern equipment uses big slot head screws, and even industrial dealers don't often stock drivers for them anymore.

There were no inexpensive driver bit sets that had a #4?

I've probably used one six times in my entire tire life, usually working on something like an outboard motor.

May be their computer inventory system told them nobody ever buys that size, so they quit stocking it.

I would just use a standard slotted screwdriver and it would work fine.

I'd find something more important to worry about

I can go buy a #4 Philips NOS Craftsman Professional from my local ACE hardware today. It’s where I purchased mine. I’m 90% certain I can get an Ace brand too. I don’t think they’re a common need however

Agreed.
It’s not like you need much torque to tighten screws into some threaded inserts in a tv

Huh, I dont think I've ever come across anything larger than a #3, and even that I dont use very often. But now because of this thread, I have a #4 open in the snapon store website. haha.

Crapsman always made a #4 phillips. I got a 2 of them.

The only times I remember using it was for a couple of screw that held a pad to a backrest bar on my Shovehead Harley

My #4 is from a Craftsman set. Last time I used it was on the same TV VESA mount bolds. Also for bolts that held my washer fluid tank. But it’s not something used all that much.

Many larger screwdriver sets include a PH4, but I’ve never seen it as a 1/4” insert bit.

I've got a Matco #4 Phillips that was in a box of tools I bought in a pawnshop in the late 80's.

I can count the number of times I've used it since then on zero fingers.

I've occasionally come across #4 phillips on fire trucks. I assume they would be common on all big trucks. I got a driver and bit socket, both Craftsman, just for these.

I got mine at Sears around 99/01 . There were regular and pro with the black rubber handle. They were also loose so you could take a screw and check to see if it fit.
I took it all for granted.

Sears used to carry them in their stores. I bought this one at least twenty years ago to mount saddlebags on a Harley. The installation instructions specifically recommended using a #4 Phillips screwdriver. I may have used it a half dozen times since then.

I gave him a list of places locally that I knew for sure stocked a #4 Phillips. Most of the places were industrial supply outlets.

The next time you'll know to check

I have one around... somewhere. OP should have simply substituted a M8x1.25 fastener that doesn't require a P4 driver.

The typical hardware store M8x1.25 has a 13mm head. Those with flanged heads are usually 12mm. Allen head are also available. Skip the stainless, it's holding up a TV. I hate stainless outside of where it is 100% required to be used. PITA to work with.

How can a simple screw be a PIA to work with?

I just looked it up. That looks like an interesting design, would be great if it came in a metric version for a vehicle kit.

Perhaps, but this and Klein's nutdrivers are geared towards electrical use. I don't use nutdrivers on vehicles much but if I do it's usually for screws or hose clamps that are 1/4 or 5/16 (8mm). Although I suppose you could use the 3/4 (19mm) on lug nuts after they're broken loose.
Most everything on the vehicle requires socket or wrench.

BTW, Klein's version is just a nutdriver and doesn't include the bits and is more expensive but has a better handle.
